^There are quite a few of "my people" in Avon Lake, and like you I can't figure out what could possibly compel them to be out there. Some of them have said they get along with neighbors but most of the time, they're going out to places downtown/Ohio City/Tremont. :wtf:
  2. Regarding "SexyBack" - I find it disturbing that today's kids apparently don't know musical composition. I mean, do people really need to be told "Take it to the chorus" and "Take to the bridge"?
  3. ^You're not the first to recommend Cornerstone, and while I like my beer dollars to go to the city proper, I'm willing to try the new spots. :)
  4. "The questions were, overall, horrendous. Some real loonies came out of the woodwork, including a woman who claimed to have "known the Stark family for 30 years" and launched into an nonsensical monologue about Crocker Park as Stark shook his head in confusion." Thank you! I mean, maybe she's a nice wonderful person, and good for her to come out to encourage Stark but girlfriend needed to forgo the cosmo with valium chaser before she arrived! When the guy asked the question about the port relocation, I overheard someone behind me saying "it's a simple question". I don't think so, and if they were expecting Stark to say "Why yes, we'll be moving ABC to exactly XYZ on precisely such-and-such date" - they're really out of touch with how massive the port relocation is. I'm not saying their concerns aren't valid, and I'm not thrilled with the prospect of losing Whiskey Island, but that question won't be answered for quite some time and Stark won't be the one making that declaration. As far as "when" - well as we know all too well - there may be things already going on but for reasons, mainly legal - they can't release plans to the public just yet. I thought overall the presentation itself was decent. As others have said, Stark definitely has charisma and I liked his presentation. He's over the top at times but I think that's true of most developers who get things done. I also thought Valerie J. McCall did a good job of speaking on the city's behalf, as did Cimperman. I really liked how Fong gave examples of the potential for the project and for the CUDC to get a rapport with Stark at this stage bodes well for the design aspects. I'll have some photos soon :)
  5. ^Any more it's probably a combination of the two - a concept that I don't care for. If I'm shelling out good $$$ for a decent pair of jeans, I don't need 1. attitude from the minimum wage twit behind the counter and 2. a perforated eardrum from the pounding music. I've also noticed these places tend to mix up the mens and womens clothing - not.cool.at.all.

    I kinda like 'em!
  7. Good point, Peter - it's hard to tell but you might be on to something. I say we should revisit this thread in a month when we've consumed a glass or two (or twenty) more. Then we can compare notes :) Now everyone get to it, and do your homework! :drunk:
  8. Some recent entries into the BZA log concerning two prominent yet unused structures: The former Howard Johnson adjacent to Fox 8 Studios: Ward 8 - Calendar No. 06-200: 5700 South Marginal Road Sabra Pierce Scott - 8 Notices Bapez Real Estate, Ltd., owner, and Moshe Bohbot appeal to establish use as a multiple unit structure/condominiums and a restaurant in an existing eleven-story, ninety-seven thousand square foot structure, situated on an acreage parcel located in a General Industry District on the south side of South Marginal Road at 5700 South Marginal Road; the proposed plan being contrary to industrial district regulations, where no building or premises in a General Industry District may be erected, altered or arranged for human habitation, as stated in Section 345.04(d)(1) of the Codified Ordinances. (Filed 9-26-06) And the old gas station at Lake and Clifton: Ward 18 - Calendar No. 06-205: 9308 Clifton Boulevard Jay Westbrook - 9 Notices MCMCII, LLC, owner and Maurice Christopher, appeal to change from a gas station to a retail store the use of an existing one-story building situated on a corner triangular shaped parcel, located in a One-Family District on the north side of Clifton Boulevard at 9308 Clifton Boulevard; the proposed substitution of a nonconforming use requiring that the Board of Zoning Appeals finds, after a public hearing, that such substitution or other change is no more harmful or objectionable than the previous nonconforming use in floor or other space occupied, in volume of trade or production in kind of goods sold or produced, in daily hours or other period of use, in the type or number of persons to occupy or to e attracted to the premises or in any other characteristic of the new use as compared with the previous use, as stated under the provisions of Section 359.01 of the Codified Ordinances.
  9. "downtown streets like Euclid, 9th and Superior are relative ghost towns by weekday with trickles of foot traffic." Let's see, on the stretch of Superior between East 12th and Public Square, you have the following: Charter One Building Diamond Building 1717 East 9th (East Ohio) St. Johns Cathedral McDonald Investment Center Hampton Inn* Superior Building McDonald Investment Center Fifth Third Center Federal Reserve Bank Cleveland Public Library Leader Building Arcade/Hyatt* Federal Courthouse 200 Public Square *The only structures that are occupied or used outside of typical business hours. Sooo, even though most of the buildings aren't used at night or on weekends, we should have hordes of pedestrians on that stretch? That area is no different than other financial districts in any other city. They're used and quite busy during working hours but otherwise they're empty as are their surrounding streets. Lack of foot traffic there has nothing to do with your perceived "catastrophic job losses" downtown. It has everything to do with the fact that certain areas of ANY city are going to be less active at certain times depending on their purpose. Btw, we've seen nothing beyond anecdotal evidence to back that up - I'm not saying jobs haven't been lost, but you make it sound like downtown workers are a veritable skeleton crew which hasn't been my experience day in and day out for the past ten years. Euclid's not much different at the moment - however I'm positive that will change once the missing residential links fall into place, especially between the Squares.
  10. "The server gave me the dirtiest look." Obviously someone in need of Christmas Ale (or more fiber in their diet).
  11. "if you like hoppy sierra nevada is a good one that is easy to find" I've had that - it's really waaay too weak on the hops for my taste. I like hoppy beers that give you the sensation of having your tastebuds whacked with a meat tenderizer - in a good way :-D
  12. Ooh, there's gonna be a urbanohio contingent! :)

"Wasn't there a study done showing that lesbians are way more likely to live in small towns compared to gay males who prefer cities? I thought I read something like that." Though it doesn't sound like a serious study, I suppose I could see that with one caveat. The "butch" gals seem to prefer a more rural lifestyle. My lipstick friends are city gals to the core - after all, there aren't usually David Yurman* boutiques next to the John Deere store  *Translation: David Yurman is a high-end jeweler, popular with fashionista-types. His "rope" style bracelets are hugely popular with older socialite types. http://www.davidyurman.com/home.aspx
  14. "Does anyone know or can anyone find out the owner/owners of The May Co. Building. I would think owner ship transfered to Federated/Macy's. As the upper floors are rented out to banks." The owners of the May Company building are a NYC-based group called Argent Ventures. For quite some time they tried to market the building as the "Public Square Tech Center" in hopes of companies storing their back-office tech stuff. Obviously that hasn't panned out as well as they had hoped. To the best of my knowledge, Federated/Macy's has never owned the building and as of now KeyBank occupies four of the upper floors for their operations center.
  15. No - I didn't recognize the figure but I deduced that it was in a close location to #2, and from the "...linson" that's visible, I went to the building locator on Case's site, found Tomlinson Hall and voila :)
  16. Tomlinson Hall @ Case. :)
  17. Yep! Calvary Lutheran!
  18. Who all is planning to attend the forum tomorrow? I'll be there with camera, of course :)
  19. What happened was I zoomed in at max from Public Square, and it did that funky perspective thing. I'm trying to remember who contacted me from WRL for this... As far as the building goes - love, love, love it (even in conceptual form).
  20. I dunno - it's designed by the same group that gave us the lovingly atrocious Goodman-Levin building at CSU. They did a great job on the NEORSD building, but a lot of their work suffers from the reflective-glass/sidewalk-ignoring approach. Is this the building site in question?
  21. "Stewart was the first person ever in her family to buy a home, and she was beyond ready to leave it. The heat never came on. The kitchen pipes froze. The electric bills were up to $400 a month in the winter from the space heaters. And the dining room wall resembled a gallery installation, with wet rot oozing down from a busted pipe upstairs. When the decay started, not long after she moved in, Stewart called the mortgage company. She expected Argent to be responsible for the product she bought, just like her landlord once was. "They said it was on me to get it fixed!" she says incredulously. "I don't know what I'm paying the mortgage for." It boggles my mind that someone would be so ill-informed of the basics of home ownership.
  22. ""However, in terms of arts and culture, it [the city] just seemed dead to me," Drago said. "There were no galleries or places to meet other artists. It was just culture shock." No sh!t sherlock, you moved to an outer-ring 'burb as an artist and realized that there isn't a big art community there. Good luck getting the rest to follow you to KinkadeLand
  23. ^I had the Hippie IPA once at Winking Lizard downtown - good stuff! Another good IPA is the Bell's Two Headed IPA, currently at Prosperity in Tremont. Dreadnought, you say... (writes note to self). I had my inaugural Christmas Ale yesterday at South Side in Tremont ($5.50 for 22oz) - it just feels like getting hugged with every sip :)
  24. ^Honestly, I didn't care for Nosferatu. I usually love hoppy beers but I guess I'm more of an IPA fan - I'd rather have Commodore Perry than Nosferatu anyday. Speaking of, has anyone ever had the Lake Erie Monster? It's a pub exclusive, and with an ABV of 9% it could be deadly but I've always been curious :)
  25. Now available (in many locations) for the 2006 holiday season :-D :drunk:
