  1. No thanks - I don't care for sweet wines.
  2. I'd say close to a billion :)

""American Scene" (realist) painter from Ohio was Charles Burchfield. I think he was from Salem or Ashtabula, that NE part of the state." He spent his formative years in Salem but was originally from the Buffalo area. He really came into his own in Salem - my high school was built on the site of one of his most famous paintings:

Oh, I know it should be obvious - but b!tching to them seems to have worked for me.

I have to say they're doing much better about that during lunch. I usually would walk right up to them, complain about the morons blocking the vestibules and they'd shoo them out. It might be different in the afternoon when more of the kids are out. Still, I'd complain to FCE and the cops present because if they don't hear about it, they don't know about it.

My first suggestion - if you're having a hard time getting leads into that kind of work (and I agree - you'd be great at it) is to find a volunteer position. The closer it is to the group you'd like to work for, and the closer it is to your passion in life, the better. You may not directly find work through the group you volunteer for - but that time you spend meeting others is invaluable. They also get to know you and getting that "face time" can work wonders. I'll say this much about the CVB - a few years ago, I offered my volunteer services, and figured that I'd be able to help with tours of downtown, etc. I explained about my site, my book, and of course my love and support of Cleveland. I got a "form" reply for people who were interested in sitting at the booth at Hopkins - as if I'd want to spend my time behind some desk helping people find the restrooms  Granted that was a few years ago, but I hope they've addressed that bullsh!t during the past years of their overhaul. To all the groups who might be reading this - when someone offers their service as a volunteer, insulting them is probably not the best approach! :)
  8. I finally snapped a pic of one of my favorite signs in Greater Cleveland - the Parma BOWLING sign on Ridge Road. In celebration of this event, I've created a Parma avatar for anyone who wants to use it! :-D
  9. Some updates of a few projects - all from October 8th: Cleveland Clinic Heart Center: Cleveland Museum of Art: Cleveland Institute of Music: Park Lane Villa:

    From October 6th:
  11. Los Angeles? Bah.
  12. I would think that they're under serious restrictions because of the tower's landmark status. I'd imagine the gold would be limited strictly to the cupola. I have an old photo (I should scan it) that shows the cupola shortly after the tower's construction, and it looks very similar - as in, the metal tastefully contrasting with the masonry below.
  13. "none of you will ever go," True, but thanks for the info nonetheless :)
  14. If you mean the goldish color that I've highlighted in this pic... That's actually the underside of the wood planks that make up the scaffolding. Sorry :|
  15. More updates of Corner Alley:
  16. Both are featured on PBS's Sites Unseen. I believe the recent Art Deco Society tour took people into the Greenbrier Suite, but I've not been there myself. To the best of my knowledge, the cupola is barely accessible to the maintenance staff (aka the flag-changer) much less to the public - on Sites Unseen, it looked like a phone booth. Speaking of, here are some closer shots: The scaffolding is impressive in its own right:

I really think the paths need to circulate, rather than "lead into", if that makes sense.

Find a neighborhood or area that you feel is well-planned on Google maps (Satellite view). Squint at it, and that should be your inspiration for the nodes and paths for this exercise. Also, in Illustrator - select the white bars - reduce their stroke to 0.
  19. ^When I lived in Tremont, that would have been true (I had a view of just about everything from St. Colman @ West 65th to downtown to the Clinic). Of course, I didn't have a good camera back then:

For the Cleveland outing, I checked with the contacts at City Hall (kudos to Marina Marquez-Zenkov, Cimperman's executive assistant for her quick reply) and here is some basic info if anyone's interested in doing a Ohio City/Market Square cleanup: 1. We'll want to check with the folks at Ohio City Near-West just to be sure the area isn't scheduled for events which would interfere. 2. Permits aren't needed to clean up litter. However, we'd need to coordinate with the Commissioner of Waste Collection who can coordinate a pick-up site(s) for the litter. 3. The intersection of Lorain Avenue and W.25th Street are in both Ward 14 and Ward 13. We might want to contact Councilman Santiago (Ward 14) to see if we can use the Westside Market dumpsters for the drop off of the litter.
  21. "Open this city up to design competitions and you will see a marked rise in the level of architecture." Now that, I definitely agree with.

Hmm... that's not too far from where I grew up. Great photos, but neither Lisbon or Carrollton were EVER my cup of tea. I once drove through Lisbon and there was a farmer-style wedding on the town square - overalls for everyone, and John Deere tractors parked along the street. I have to point out that you missed one of Lisbon's most famous landmarks - the Steel Trolley Diner.
  23. You're right about the winds - serves me right for trying to post while downloading from iTunes, photoshopping a few dozen pics, and eating a late dinner :-P
  24. Here's a radical idea - how about we wait and see what they offer for this project, before we shoot them down? If they offer up a schlocky pile of bricks, then have at it and shred their proposal. Or, we could go the other route - submit your proposal for a new student center here and we can all critique it. I don't think they're the most envelope-pushing firm, but they've done some fine work. I was impressed with their redesign of the Summit County library in Akron. What really struck me was the complete transformation of the open area south of it into a great public space. From www.gwathmey-siegel.com:
