Columbus, IN - September 2006
Before BallHatGuy decides that he'll never post another photo thread, let me just say that in no way, shape or form am I suggesting that Columbus, Indiana isn't impressive for its collection of significant works by noted architects of the Modern era. In no way, shape or form am I suggesting that said collection is right up there with the "Biggest Ball of Twine" or that the city has nothing to offer beyond a few buildings designed by firms we've all heard of. I simply took issue with ragerunner's assertion of this place having more notable works of architecture than Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cleveland combined. For a town of 39,000 I'm sure it's downright amazing that they'd have a Saarinen, SOM, etc. but let's face it - you could likely fit the entire downtown into one of the big C's neighborhoods. That's all I was trying to say, and BallHatGuy, thank for posting your pics - they are very nice, and my commentary is only addressing another forumer's statements. Yeesh!

Adobe Illustrator CS2 questions...
Are you familiar with the pen tool in Photoshop? Not the brush or pencil, but the PEN (the tool you use to make a path). If so, it's very similar to how the pen tool works in Illustrator.

Cleveland: Downtown Office Buildings Updates
"How about this bad boy below, with a few more 'Chinese food boxes'. It could serve two purposes: Fill in old PS, and increase awareness of Cleveland's Chinatown:" Ok, I'm always in favor of creative approaches - I'm just not feeling this one (with apologies to Paul who took the original pic) :|

Cleveland: Downtown Office Buildings Updates
Here we are - the 21st floor of the Huntington Building, now site of Sammys Metropolitan restaurant was once a waiting area for zeppelin passengers. Unfortunately, that whole Hindenburg thing put the kibbosh on it before it was ever used for blimp travel.

Cleveland: Confronting Decline in an American City (new PBS documentary)
"I think we all underestimate the fear people have of downtowns or "the city". A natural antsyness that comes from the fear of a different environment is fine. If a woman is fearful of walking through a bleak streetscape, I understand and I'm sympathetic. If people are a little disoriented trying to figure out how to use transit - I can understand. But - I draw the line at coddling peoples' irrational fears. Back when I had a car, I was driving friends through downtown Cleveland around Public Square - one was visibly uncomfortable and said "Are all these people in gangs?!?!? Why are they just out on the street?!?". I made a point of ridiculing her ignorance while I explained that those "gang members" were ordinary people waiting for their bus. My parents will be visiting this weekend and my mom (god love her, but she can be high-strung - wonder where I get it?), was freaking out about traffic, what about taxis, etc. I reminded her that she spent a significant time of her life in Old Town South Chicago. She realized that she didn't have much to worry about :)

Cleveland: Downtown: East 4th Street Developments
^Depending on what (if any) sound suppression they use - it might not be completely awful. The last I heard, it was to be residential but that was a while ago. I did notice that they've put in a lot of new glass on both the lower and upper floors :)

Urban Ohio Day of Service!
^I hear what you're saying, but hear me out. Having coordinated forum meets in the past, I've found that it's difficult enough just narrowing down a day that everyone agrees on. Adding the volunteer/cleanup/labor portion doesn't make it any easier - you can't just have a group show up at the area of your choice with bags in hand and start cleaning away. In some cases, permits (or permission) may be needed, trash containers may need to be provided by the city, etc. Suppose ten people say they'll be there, but only three show up - but you've agreed in advance to cover a large area? Plus - the only exertion from forum meets is from walking - imagine how tired people would be if they were doing something labor-intensive for three hours? Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see each group have a big turnout, and have a major event that creates impact - but for the first time out, I'd err on the side of caution. A small project would still be more than us doing nothing at all :)

Urban Ohio Day of Service!
"I know that we probably can't do it now since the cold season is fast approaching." Ha! Maybe you freezebabies down south aren't up for it, but I laugh at the cold season (as long as I have beer to warm my blood) :-D Just kidding. Seriously though - I agree - I don't think we'd want to do some major house renovation but maybe an hour tops just spent cleaning up litter in a prominent urban hood wouldn't be too bad. I think Ohio City would be a great place for the Cleveland contingent. Does it get much better than providing community service within one block of Great Lakes Brewing Company? Depending on when we can get something together, they may be serving Christmas Ale!!!

The "Apple Macintosh" Discussion Thread
"There is no person off the street coming into the Mac store needing the processing power of anything above the very first Mac Mini for photoshop." Absolutely. However, as we all know - Mac has a dedicated niche market of designers who sometimes DO need that extra processing power. "No typical person is going to be creating digital prints over 16X20" at 300dpi or editing 600dpi HD video. The 1.2Ghz G4 with 256mb ram can easily handle that size work." For the record, I have a Mini at home and it does a perfectly fine job for everything I do - outside of work. However, at work, when I'm putting together displays for trade shows or working with multiple files for magazine covers,I need something with more power and speed. Congrats Monte - but as forum Queen, I hereby declare your new toy my property!

Columbus, IN - September 2006
"This town probably has more noted architectual buildings then probably all of Columbus, Cincinnati and Cleveland put together." Sure, it has a lot of noted buildings but let's face it - the firms who designed them are often more notable than the buildings themselves. Sure, it has a nice collection of interesting buildings from the Modern era, but if it's this veritable bustling metropolis that you describe, you might want to take a gander at this article: http://www.metropolismag.com/cda/story.php?artid=2122 I'm not saying that it's not an interesting place, or the Modern buildings aren't impressive in their own right - but more than all the big C's put together? Really now.

Cleveland Housing "Boomlet"
""There's no longer anyone building starter homes in Geauga," County Auditor Tracy Jemison said. "They're all in the 3,000-square-foot range." Nice euphemism

Urban Ohio Day of Service!
The obvious, regardless if it's a statewide or city-specific event: 1. Must within the city limits. 2. Must be reasonably accessible via transit. 3. Must be in an area conducive for MayDay to take pics ;) 4. Highly recommend a social element even if it's just beers after the project - it's always nice to get to know other people, but it's not always easy if you're busy with said project. I guess my question would be - what kind of service projects are people interested in? I think it should be something that gets the participants out into the city (as opposed to a soup kitchen). Other issues to address - i.e. would a cleanup project be better if we worked alongside Downtown Cleveland Alliance, rather than on our own? We'd also want to check ahead to be sure we have any necessary permission, supplies, etc. I think it would be neat if each of the big 3 cities had events on the same day but it's hard to organize schedules sometimes.

Cleveland: Cuyahoga County Gov't properties disposition (non-Ameritrust)
It was originally proposed to be this: Thus, they'd have to demo 1010 Euclid and build the new tower alongside the existing.

Cleveland: Downtown Office Buildings Updates
I don't disagree that economically speaking - a new signature tower on Public Square might not be the best option. I'd also like to see a half-dozen ten-story buildings infilling the parking lots instead of one 60-story tower. However, you're off with some of your points. "the Renaissance Center in Detroit," Apples and oranges. The RenCen is a poorly designed Portman "fortress" (given the 70s fortress mentality) on a site too far away from the heart of the CBD. It has an enormous footprint, is separated by what may as well be a freeway (it would be like Key Tower being located on the Browns Stadium site), and for many years had a horrific concrete wall/berm facing the city. Even with the new enhancements of recent years, it's an enormous and disorienting facility. The Public Square site is much smaller, more centrally located, and any tower there would likely be required to have street-level amenities. I don't think a new building the size of One Cleveland Center would decimate the local real estate market the way the RenCen affected Detroit. "Also keep in mind that whatever gets built on the west side of the Square also needs to transition architecturally to the Warehouse District" The massing models for Stark's project for the superblock show low-rise buildings along West 6th, and gradually increasing to 10-15ish stories along West 3rd. If those taller portions end up being 200ish feet, it wouldn't be too drastic if a tower on Public Square was around 500 feet.

Cleveland: Downtown Office Buildings Updates
Well if you remember the plans for Ameritrust, it was originally going to be somewhat mixed-use with a 500-room Hyatt - and I imagine any new plans would involve a hotel component.

Cleveland - National PARK(ing) Day by Rebar
I believe that as long as the meter is fed, it's open season barring any kind of illegal activity or obstructing traffic/pedestrian flow. In other words, if you're just occupying the parking space sans vehicle, it's all good.
