The Cleveland Photo Trivia Thread (Updated April 4, 2007)
Well I honestly thought that the Arcade location would be too easy, so that's why I guessed the Euclid location. Anyway, I do believe they have similar signage.

Urbanohio is adversely affecting my life
I've been a member of this site since inception, and a member of a global geekboard (skyscraperpage.com) for almost ten years. So yeah, I suppose I may have spent a little too much time ;-) Seriously, when I met my S.O., I had to explain this site - and it was almost like "coming out"

I'll be there :-)

Cleveland: Retail News
" "There is no other place that is so focused on the unusual, the independent, the exceptional retailer." Or the car. I'm sorry - as great as Stark's plans are for downtown, and I'll give credit that for what it is, Crocker Park is pretty nice, but Eton is the biggest clusterf#ck of a parking lot with a gussied up strip plaza. I rarely go there but if I do, it's always with a sense of dread.

Southeast Ohio: General Business & Economic News
"I always just thought of it more as an exurb of the Youngstown area and I don't consider Youngstown Appalachian. I think of Appalachia in Ohio as mostly Southeast. People so poor the kids don't have shoes, and the schools are completely horrible." Obviously Salem is the northernmost point of Appalachian Ohio. Not coincidentally it's not as poverty-stricken as desolately rural areas such as the places mentioned above - yet. However, not far from Salem in Columbiana County ARE areas like you mention - my mom used to teach Head Start and worked for the community action agency - dirt floors, kids without shoes, squalor, you name it. Although Salem is in slightly better straits, it may not be that way for long - almost all of the major mills/plants/shops that employed my generations' parents are gone. The schools are in serious decline after some mismanagement scandals, and enrollment is shrinking. The closest major cities are Youngstown and Canton - hardly beds of employment opportunity. ""Getting up and moving" is just not the way to improve Appalachia (or Ohio in general). Should we all just leave Cleveland, Toledo, Dayton, and Youngstown because the economies are currently weak in those areas?" I think all of us lean toward fighting the good fight. However, at what point does fighting the good fight take a toll on our futures?

Southeast Ohio: General Business & Economic News
^Sounds about right, except some of us were fortunate to have a branch of Kent State within driving distance. It also helped that I was going to college - period, and my parents wouldn't have it any other way. There was never a question of "learning a trade" because we knew those trades were being shipped south or overseas. I agree about the magnet - fortunately Cleveland's about 2 hours from Salem (thanks to no direct highway access). As far as the idiots needing to move - thank you for insulting not only me, but my family. Would you suggest that they sell their home and relocate to say, Cleveland? That's pretty naive, because as bad as the real estate market is now - imagine how bad it is in Appalachian Ohio. Even if they did (or could) sell - my family's 1920-built home on one acre wouldn't enable them to move anywhere into Cleveland except undesirable crime-ridden neighborhoods. All I can say is that as bad as I think of Salem, I'm grateful that it isn't Chauncey (never been, have no inclination to).

Cleveland: Flats Developments (Non-Stonebridge or FEB)
Goes without saying, but if someone can go with a camera, please try to get any pics of renderings/site plans they might have. Thanks! :-)

Cleveland: Flats Developments (Non-Stonebridge or FEB)
Stonebridge is apparently what "Peachtree" is to Atlanta. Here's the breakdown: Stonebridge Waterfront - (apartments) the first two buildings on the south side of the viaduct. They're the first two you see as you cross the swing bridge. Stonebridge Center - 8-ish story office building with Ponte Vecchio and Cuyahoga County Engineer's office, north of the viaduct. Stonebridge Towers - (condo) - the 12-story tower on the west end of the Detroit-Superior Bridge. Stonebridge Plaza - (condo) - 12-story condo tower currently under construction. Stonebridge Place - (townhomes) - this newly announced 100-townhome project. Hope this helps :-)

That's one nice thing about eating at the bar - it's no biggie if you just order an app and a drink :-D

Cleveland: The Park Building
"I wonder if being a Historic building or obtaining Historic status has anything to do with it?" Absolutely - almost all projects that you've seen using historic restoration tax credits are under restrictions for what can and cannot be done. Replacing windows is a big, big, big issue with a lot of restoration projects. If they don't, then residents suffer from the noise. If they do, the restrictions are a real headache and often expensive. For example, I know someone who used to live in the Federal Knitting Mills Building on Detroit - her north-facing unit enjoyed a treat during the holidays - SNOW came through the "historic" windows! :-o

No, although I'm splitting hairs - and I agree that the lobby facade is really cool - that's still your opinion. :-)

#1 Cleveland Public Library - Main Branch. Is that the East 3rd side? #2 Greek Express - I think that's the Euclid Ave. spot.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Well I have to wonder - if this spike in violence was happening in Central, would there would be press conferences concerning new policing initiatives, with the mayor denouncing the recent events, etc.? No one's asking him or Westbrook to don flak jackets and accompany the SWAT team but the least they could do is be a little more visible in addressing the problem. I don't think that's asking for too much, and I still say the interviewee has a point.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Personally, I'm at the point where if three idiots meet their fate by being stupid, it's thinning of the herd. I normally don't advocate violence but dear god - don't their parents teach them that ANYONE could be toting a gun? If their parents gave more of a sh!t about them when they are alive rather than dead (after being in a situation), I think half of the problems would be solved. God knows if you had taken them out, we'd be seeing relatives on the news saying "they were good kids!". Well, had they been more attentive parents they would be GOOD and ALIVE. /rant Honestly though, I think your best bet (and I'm not a cyclist so I could be wrong) is to take Detroit to West 69th/Father Caruso or wherever that tunnel is to Edgewater Park and get home via the park. It's sad that the area is in such dire straits but honestly - it's like the person they interviewed on Fox 8 said to Frank Jackson and Jay Westbrook, "how many more people have to die before they get off their asses and do something that actually has impact?". I'd like to think that won't be necessary but tell me this - does Frank Jackson strike you as someone who is tough on crime? There's a place for his quiet demeanor and this isn't it.

Cleveland Relocation Assistance, Please
Although I don't live in Tremont - my S.O. does, and thus I spend quite a bit of time there. Most of the new condos in Tremont are east of West 14th, and north of I-490. Location-wise, I think Tremont is great and the area I'm talking about seems to be a little better as far as crime. The problem with the area is that most new condos are going for $200K minimum and that's on the low end. Granted that's still cheap by most major city standards, and still cheaper than Pinnacle and the high-end Stonebridge units. And as others have said - it's not quite as transit-accessible, though it's still better than the 'burbs.

Cleveland: Cuyahoga County Gov't properties disposition (non-Ameritrust)
"Public should speak up before tower comes down" They have - they don't like it. Don't get me wrong, I understand Litt's point and I'm well aware of Breuer's importance as a Modernist, etc. I personally think that preserving the tower would be a wise and economically prudent move. But simply said - outside of Modernist-architecture-appreciation and preservation circles, this tower is viewed by most people as ugly. Sure, the Larkin Building in Buffalo wasn't a dainty structure but it also wasn't a dark slab of a tower with concrete honeycomb windows. http://www.pbs.org/flw/buildings/larkin/larkin.html If Litt is looking for public sentiment beyond what's already been said - I don't think he'll find much. As he mentioned in the article - it took Cleveland Restoration Society and CUDC this long to organize any kind of opposition. That wouldn't be the case if there was more sentiment for the tower.

STONEBRIDGE Condominiums/Apartments/Commercial/Retail And the redevelopment of the West Bank of the Flats Held on Superior Viaduct 4:00PM, Thursday, Sept. 21 Followed by a reception and party 4:00pm... hmm, they're trying to attract people to invest in their project. They're trying to generate interest in their project. Just like I had to explain to one of my galpals who scheduled her wedding rehearsal dinner in Hudson at 5pm on a Friday, knowing full well that most of the wedding party lives in Cuyahoga County, but couldn't understand why people were frustrated - SOME PEOPLE WORK. Mind you, I'm not in the market to buy a condo but I'm sure those who are, are employed. Why? So they can afford a condo. When do they work? I'm guessing that more often than not - 9am to 5pm. I'm sure they'll get a good turnout but for the love of all that's holy - 4pm? :whip:

"On Thursday at 4pm on the Viaduct, the developers are going to announce a grand plan for the west bank of the flats." I got the postcard too - it only mentions Stonebridge Plaza (well, not directly but you know what I mean). Is there more to it than that?

Cleveland-random venting
In all honesty (knock on wood), the only time I've ever been on a bus where there was a problem with a homeless person - I sh!t you not, the 246 Westlake Park and Ride  Some crazy-ass guy hopped on in a panic and the driver said "Sir?!? HELLO?!?" and he started yelling at all the soccer mom types "HELLO!" "HELLO!!!" "HELLO!!!!!!" :-( Thankfully he just walked right back off the bus.
