  1. "Correct me if I'm wrong, but the scariest parts of that area are south of Detroit. It seems very tame to the north." Not quite - generally the area south of the rapid lines and west of the Lake/Detroit intersection gets sketchy:
  2. Dear god... what a tragic loss. I've admired her work for quite some time... RIP :-( http://www.masumimuseum.com/index.html
  3. "Give me a break! Why would this "destroy" thse new projects? more doom and gloom..." Not necessarily, but let's be honest - they certainly could end up on the scrap heap if the area doesn't get cleaned up. The offerings at Battery Park are around $250K-$300K - and the people who CAN make the choice to invest in that area aren't going to want to spend their first six months cocooned in their new homes b!tching to their councilman about the nightly gunfire. It's just as easy for them to buy at Rockport Square or in tamer areas of Ohio City and Tremont (or in further out 'burbs). 4 homicides in one week isn't a matter of "perception" or boring white people being scaredy-cats, that's 4 homicides all within a week in one specific area in desperate need of investment.
  4. I hate to say it, but I agree with lewarctj, at least that the area has been known for crime. However, as the areas east of the Detroit Ave./Lake Ave. intersection have gentrified, the criminal element has steadily moved west in the West 70s, 80s and 90s along Detroit, Madison and Lorain.
  5. "And on the other side... " Wow - that, umm... construction worker looks weighed down with all those materials he's hauling! :|
  6. musky, I recognize the Wheatley Building in the background. The foreground building has me stumped - is the view from East 55th?
  7. You are correct! It's no longer a bookstore - it's now law offices but they left the statue there.

What's cool is tracing my steps for typical daily activities - going to the bus stop is a quarter-mile. If I'm doing errands at lunch (or going from East 9th to Waterstreet Grille like I did today), I end up walking anywhere from 1 to 1.5 miles. Maybe I can indulge (or imbimbe) a little more! :drunk:
  9. Not sure if this has been posted before, but what the heck. I came across gmap-pedometer.com which lets you plot a route and then save it so others can see/share. Personally, I'm a walker. I don't enjoy jogging for many reasons - uneven pavement, potential damage to knees, etc. Cycling is out of the question due to inner-ear/sinus balance issues. Mostly I like a brisk pace but slow enough that I can enjoy the surroundings, and my neighborhood is perfect for it. Lots of old school mansions and apartment buildings and a nice amount of people out and about. For example, I went for a walk tonight and I plotted my favorite way (though I vary it every so often). http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=372834 All you have to do is press "record", and double-click for each "point" you want to make and it will draw the line for you. The numbers that pop up along the route are your mileage. Then, hit "save route" and it will give you a URL and that's your route! :-) http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/
  10. Legos, schmegos - it was all about the Micronaut Cities!!! http://www.micro-outpost.com/pictures/city/city.html
  11. I was going to say - although I like the idea of "the guesser gets to post the next batch", not everyone has their own pics to post or somewhere to host them. So free-for-all it is! :-D
  12. You are correct, it's the Mather Mansion (not Memorial) :-)
  13. Buck up little camper! You can do it! :-D
  14. MGD's guesses: 1) Mather Memorial Building? Not quite! 2) Old Stone Church? Yep! 3) St. Johns? Nope! 4) Federal Reserve? Nope! 5) Key Tower? In the vicinity, but not quite!
  15. Okeydokey, have a crack at these: #1 - Chimney Pot of Mather Mansion at Cleveland State University - guessed by Musky #2 - Clock on steeple of Old Stone Church - guessed by Mister Good Day #3 - Statue of St. Paul on former Pauline Bookstore at Ontario and Prospect - guessed by buckeye1 #4 (Hint - Ho ho HO) - Detail of Higbee Building, guessed by wimwar #5 - Access stairwell on Mall A (leading to parking garage of Key Tower): - guessed by ella
  16. I looked at Piccadilly's site and no Thomas Kinkade to be found, so they're fine by me! :-) http://www.piccadillys.com/new/index.html
  17. Rec center pics: Lobby: Entry hall: Racquetball/squash courts off to the left of the hall (I think there are at least four courts): One of the gyms - some kind of rubberized flooring: Second level: The other gym: These treadmills... have THESE views!!! :-) The track above the "other gym" with the circuit machines waiting to be moved into the room with THE views: Back down at the main lobby:
  18. "Where is Greg Peckham (Cleveland Public Art Director)? They initiated the competition and now they and RTA should be accountable for letting this opportunity to create a dynamic public art exhibit be pushed away by some government bullshit. F!" They have a website, with contact information. I consider Greg (and everyone at Cleveland Public Art) my friend and I would caution you to be understanding of his position. You don't know all the reasons that the budget was reduced (nor do I) and it's not fair to lay blame without knowing the background information. I've sat on juries for projects for CPA (not this one) and while there were a lot of submissions that were wonderfully brilliant and creative - I would guess that few of the artists in those particular competitions have ever budgeted, engineered or fabricated something on such a large scale. In one particular case, one artist's entry would have blown the entire project budget on the support system alone! As KJP pointed out - this is a working, functioning rail line that no matter what - the design of the art component can NOT intrude on its operation. As I've learned in my career as an artist, being creative will get you far but being in budget will get your project completed.
  19. Ugh... does Picadilly's still specialize in Thomas Kinkade? I think they used to carry that tripe when they were at the Galleria. I definitely agree with Atmosphere, though.
  20. I don't know about the best, but they're definitely good! (from the parking garage @ Metrohealth):
  21. Like I'm gonna stay up until 1am so you can see pretty pics. I'll have them up tomorrow! :-)
  22. Wait til you see the new Rec Center pics I took :-)
  23. Some photos from the ribbon cutting: An impressive turnout: I SAID it was an impressive turnout! I guess this is the gal that'll be moving in - her grandfather used to live here back in the day: Goooo Deco lettering! The east lobby looks like it'll be the spot for the new deli/pizza spot: Looove the detailing around the elevators: A small movie theatre - I overheard a few middle-aged hens cackling "It's tiny!" Were they hoping for a f#cking multiplex? The main rec room: Purdy! And the main banquet/dining room (and they had a good spread, folks!): Close-up of the elevator detailing: And some exterior shots: Sorry I didn't get more photos, but I had to get back to work :|
  24. Folks, I work literally one block from the Phase One site. Believe me, when I see the lot closed off and equipment on-site, I will be there like white on rice :-D
  25. Batteries are charged, and the memory cards are ready :-)
