  1. Just a few more shots added to the first post :-)

Correction - the Dolans WERE in on. They bailed a while ago according to an article in Crains from way back when.
  3. "there's nothing wrong with an after-work pint!" Absolutely! I'll definitely drink to THAT! I'm hardly an activist shareholder but let's face it, with all the recent corporate scandals (and the Sarbanes-Oxley act which really stepped up on accounting accuracy) and the excess of the dot-com days, corporations are reallllly reluctant to 1. permit consumption during working hours and 2. permit alcohol to show up on expense accounts - that is, if expense accounts haven't already been eliminated. A CEO is going to have a hard time explaining why his salespeople have large booze tabs if the company isn't performing. There are also some liability issues there but you get the point. Honestly though - there are still indeed some old-line places in the CBD, enough to provide for those who are looking for that sort of thing. Plus, think about how many old-line bars there are within the city limits - I don't think we'll be seeing "sunbelt blandness" anytime soon :-)
  4. I think on boatnerd.com, they actually have a schedule for which ships are supposed to come into port. Don't quote me but I also thought I saw some sort of realtime/GPS locator thingymajig! "can you imagine if you were up in one of those Stonebridge apartments," I don't know... I mean I guess I'd have to manage. I mean, it's not like I'd just love to have THIS view or anything
  5. " I think Downtown bars went the way of the Downtown side-street..." It's called corporations cracking down on drinking during work hours. The three-martini lunch is a rarity nowadays, as most shareholders understandably don't want to see their investment spent on employees boozing it up. "How many non-sportsy, non-lounge, non-WHD watering holes are left downtown? Guv'nor Pub in Huntington Building," Guv'nor Pub has been closed for years - go figure, they never advertised, they were located in the basement of a fortress of a building, and had all the ambiance of a musty cellar (using forest green carpeting to decorate shelves? Ick!). I'm not saying every place needs plasma screens, recessed lighting, and fiber optically lit martini glasses, but the place was just really really reeeaalllly dated. There are still a few places that qualify as pubs - Tavern on the Mall, Flannerys, Winking Lizard, Moriaritys, Little Bar (though in the WHD) to name a few.

Ahem... http://www.wkyc.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=50990 Fyi, I rode the trolley today and miraculously survived, unharmed. :-o
  7. So this weekend, the S.O. decided to get some gas at the station in the Flats. As we were leaving, I saw the swing bridge was open for river traffic. Of course, I had the camera with me and here's what I saw: We headed over to the Columbus Road bridge but alas, it was already up... My S.O. doing a lovely job of providing an idea of how large the bridges are: The American Republic is 634 feet long - another 25 feet and it'd be as long as BP Tower is tall! More info at :http://www.boatnerd.com/pictures/fleet/amrepub.htm And just for sh!ts and giggles, a pic from the bus on the way home last night:
  8. "By the way, on a related note, Cleveland needs to stop thinging that everything needs to go thru the preordinated "ambassadors" such as Suzie Frasier ... there should be room for everyone." Do you have personal experience with the Ingenuity festival?
  9. I think it's pretty atrocious in that model - and I happen to like a lot of Philip Johnson's work. The mishmash of pseudo-gothic shapes don't work at all with the Victorian-era Society for Savings building.

Hmm, I suppose I could be a little upset if someone took a seat that I wanted to take photos from, but yeesh! I mean... they argued from Public Square to Playhouse Square? Over a seat? On a TROLLEY???

Sorry - hard to tell on here sometimes. For what it's worth, I actually heard some people say "aw man, that was COOL having a flophouse there!". :|

No, I can assure you that Ohio City is a much better place without the Jay Hotel (in its former state). From what I understand from friends who live in the area, it wasn't just "interesting and edgy", it was downright dangerous and really held the area back.
  15. The Case proposal to move some adminstrative offices to the Halle Building is on hold.

^I believe it may be part of the Front Street Lofts proposal but I could be wrong. I'm going to add the new site plans/renderings to the "Front Street" thread. Here's a smaller version of the Jay Hotel rehab:

If you make it to the forum meet, you'll fit right in
  18. "just a guess, but I think they would build a tower as they have a "signature" building in almost every city they are located in." They have signature buildings in almost every city because they've acquired a lot of banks and slapped their name on the respective buildings. BofA hasn't actually built too many of their towers. "Chase just arrived, via a merger but do we know if BoA can open op "retail" location in Metro Cleveland?" Highly unlikely because there's a rule that no one single bank can hold more than 10% of the nation's deposits. BofA is very close to that limit - that's why they bought MBNA, a credit card company. Now, some of the other banking giants could conceivably try to grow a retail footprint but it's likely that they'd do it via a merger/acquisition rather than just entering the market on their own.
  19. Although it's possible they could move their offices downtown, I seriously doubt we'd see a "mega tower" from them.
  20. Bank of America... downtown... you don't say... I wonder where they could set up shop
  21. Haha, no need to worry - I don't mind if you have a pic as your screensaver. That's what's called "fair usage" - aka you aren't using it to make money or reselling it as though it was yours. I know the photo you're talking about - that's a pic that ColDayMan took. Maybe he'll be nice enough to let me make it into an avatar for you. :-)
  22. "question...I have no idea how to put a picture from clevelandskyscrapers.com as my avtar" Wellll, doing so would technically be an infringement of federal copyright laws. As webmaster of clevelandskyscrapers.com and photographer of 90% of the images on clevelandskyscrapers.com, I'd have grounds for legal action - probably not much beyond a "cease and desist" letter but you get the idea. Sounds silly but it's true. But seriously, I'd be happy to make an avatar - custom-designed, just for you. :-) Just let me know what photo you're interested in. Thanks!

"If they don't take the WL, at the very least why can't they either walk up to 9th Street" They do. I work in the Penton Media Building and several of my friends work in Erieview, City Hall, North Point, Key Tower, etc. and I can assure you that plenty of them walk from the Muny Lot to their workplaces. Being able to cut through the North Point building and its garage make it easy during inclement weather.
  25. "Do fellow RTA riders ever wonder aloud if you're from out of town or something, snapping pics from the bus?" Honestly, most people don't take notice. The few that have thought I was taking pics for a class and I just shook my head in agreement (because if I engaged in conversation, I'd miss the shot). "Btw, not to sound cynical, but were your street shots around Euclid/E. 9th during some kind of special event?" Lunch. On a 45-degree day. It's sad to say, but given downtown's decline in recent years, as a business center, you almost have to think there's a special even going on if you see more than 2 or 3 people on the same block during the daytime... Having worked in downtown Cleveland for eight consecutive years, I'm happy to respectfully disagree with your assessment. I've noticed over the years that there has been an increase (albeit a modest one) of pedestrian traffic in downtown. During the day, unless weather is in the 20s or less or high winds/rain/snow (which are less frequent than you'd think), there's usually a healthy trickle of people out and about on most main arteries downtown. Certain areas have no reason to have a high pedestrian count - for example, Superior between East 9th and East 6th is comprised mostly of banking or government buildings which aren't open outside of M-F, 9-5. I'm not suggesting that downtown is bustling or that it has the healthiest pedestrian scene, but to hear you talk, it's me and a tumbleweed - that's not reality.
