Cleveland: Rent party rescues landmark bookstore
"He said he needs to use the Internet more aggressively to sell his books and find a way to work with other area independent used-books stores to share inventory and grow together." My question is - has he used the internet to sell his books at all? Also, I don't see his store listed on http://www.nobsweb.org/ - they're one of the best ways for booksellers to network. It's good that the party went well, but I'd suggest he hook up with NOBS so he doesn't have to have another party next year. My folks sell antique/collectible books online and they're the first to tell you that they're like "Ma and Pa Kettle" but if my folks can learn about FTP, *anyone* can. :-)

much overdue, but not really anticipated, my 2005 photo recap
"mayday, how exactly will you be saluting key? " Ohhh, I dunno... :finger2: :-D "Also, taylor was seemingly an administration building, and amazingly ugly at that....." Yeah, the School of Journalism/MassComm is on the first floor, and the architecture school is on the top floor - go figure.

Sister Site: clevelandskyscrapers.com Updates!
I'm not sure how often (if ever) people visit my site, but just wanted to let everyone know that I've made quite a few updates in the past few months. Quite a few new images and in a lot of cases, I've replaced older/smaller images with something new and improved. If you ever want to take a virtual trip to the Terminal Tower observation deck, you can do that too :-) Feel free to take a peek - and enjoy. http://www.clevelandskyscrapers.com

East or West Side of Cleveland
"Um, you don't have to go all the way to the suburbs to get to a nice West Side neighborhood. Heard of Tremont? Ohio City? Detroit-Shoreway? Clifton-Edgewater?" Hey now - don't be spreading that rumor - I like having my thuggish street-cred! E-dub represent! :-D

Cleveland: Random Development and News
"the building could be a viable rehab project." I don't know about that, the building's not terribly remarkable - but I think it's ridiculous that they would allow the demolition without subsequent plans for redevelopment into something other than a surface lot.

Cleveland: Random Development and News
Side street or not, it's not like the area is lacking in parking :whip: From the Board of Zoning Appeals: "9:30 Calendar No. 06-5: 1031 Superior Avenue Ward 13 The Catholic Diocese of Cleveland, owner, and William Hudson, agent, appeal to demolish an existing 10-story structure and establish in its place a parking lot for 106 spaces, proposed to be situated on an acreage parcel between Superior Avenue and Rockwell Avenue in a Semi-Industry District at 1031 Superior Avenue; where the proposed project is located within a designated downtown area district, and Section 349.14(d) requires City Planning Commission approval where the establishment of a surface parking lot is prohibited by the Regulations of Section 349.14, although the Board of Zoning Appeals may grant a variance, but only if it determines that denial of the variance would deprive the property owner of all reasonable economic use of the subject property, as stated in Section 349.14(g) of the of the Codified Ordinances." *EDIT* Whoever asked about the Montana Townhomes - they have 3 units left, according to Progressive Urban.

East or West Side of Cleveland
^It isn't much different from the Manhattanites who say "the downtown people always go uptown, but the uptown people NEVER go downtown". Not always true and a generalization but there is a kernel of truth to that.

East or West Side of Cleveland
Oh, whatever you do - don't try to tell an old-school Tremont resident that they're a "West sider". They're a "South sider" - and woe be to you if you insist otherwise. :argue:

Raising awareness of urban living
One thing that has helped boost city living to Clevelanders has been the "Cool Cleveland" parties. Cool Cleveland is basically a weekly email newsletter that lists all the cool/cultural/funky events going on during that week. Every now and then, they'll have a party - usually based around a new residential project (the first I attended was at the Tower Press lofts, others have been at the Bingham Building, Rockport Square, etc.). The parties give people a chance to socialize and check out new living options in a festive setting which no doubt adds to the appeal. The turnout is usually in the hundreds so I would guess that in the crowd are a few potential prospects. It also helps when those of us who live in the city show people some of the things that first attracted us. For example, my friend who lives in a small town came to visit - she and I hit some of the spots that I'm used to. She absolutely raved about places like the West Side Market, Tremont, etc. What really appealed was when I showed her how close I live to work. She has a 40-minute drive, and when she saw that it's possible to live IN the city, 5 minutes from work, and STILL be in a nice area - that made a big difference in how she saw things.

East or West Side of Cleveland
"But even if you live in the suburbs, you're still either on the west side or east side..." To an extent - when I hear someone say "I'm an eastsider" (when they live in fricking Bainbridge) or "I'm a westsider" (when they live in fricking Brunswick), I'm sorry folks - you live in the sticks. Period.

East or West Side of Cleveland
I prefer to live on the West Side for a few reasons: 1. Housing is slightly less expensive, at least when it comes to rentals. 2. Clifton/Edgewater, the city's most prominent gay 'hood is on the West Side. 3. Access to the lakefront (Edgewater Park). I can walk there in less than 5 minutes. 4. Far less lake-effect snow, particularly along the lakefront. That said, I don't understand the "East vs. West" mentality - it's not like Cleveland is THAT big, and there are things on the East Side that aren't on the West and vice versa.

Cleveland: UH may consolidate 600 workers at Atrium building
This would be the building in question, when it still had the 60s facade - it's across from the Holiday Inn Express:

From that site: "The synergy created by these complementary initiatives will enhance MidTown’s ‘urban cool’ character by producing a vibrant business and ..." Not with THIS logo it won't - let me guess, 2 minutes in Paint?

:-D Seriously though, I believe there's a Design Within Reach at Easton Town Center, and it might have closed but I recall seeing a large modern furniture store on High Street in the Short North.

Ohio's Tallest Structures (Youngstown #1?)
The Youngstown tower is actually 1,433 feet - that's the official height from the FCC site. Not the best pic - it's best seen at night - large white strobes make it pretty easy to find:
