From Sept. 2, 2005 - the structural steel for the "lobby" is going up:
  2. Folks, they've set up a large model of the art museum and expansion in the "pavilion" at 515 Euclid Avenue. It will be open for the duration of the Ingenuity Festival. Here are pics for those who can't make it:

Wait until tomorrow - if they keep up tradition, they'll fly directly over and "buzz" downtown (as opposed to over the lake). :-P
  5. Perhaps a first topic would be the clusterf#ck that has become the 55 line :whip:

"Jackson highlighted his deep Cleveland roots, saying he has lived in the same neighborhood his entire life and understands the problems his community deals with every day. He said he has family members who are in prison, addicted to drugs, unemployed and dealing with teen pregnancy." I don't understand how his life experience translates into being an effective mayor. Don't get me wrong, it's admirable that he's done well for himself but this sounds more like "I have the history to understand the poverty of my ward" not "I have the experience to negotiate with corporate leaders and developers to generate investment in the city". What is he going to do beyond enforcing Fannie Lewis laws and steering preference to programs helping low-to-moderate income families? That may well be his history but it doesn't mean much to a lot of Cleveland residents - not EVERYONE is in poverty, after all.

I think they might actually want that, Lindsh - when you have such a large group of buildings that's creating an instant (well, over the course of a few years) neighborhood there's a danger in keeping everything the same and things can look monotonous. Also, it's going to envelope quite a bit of the former Cantina building - I would hate to see them try to blend or match the brick veneer with the historic brick facade of the Cantina structure. That would look pretty bad because as good as the veneer looks, it's not old-school brick. The contrasting steel/glass next to the Cantina will make thing interesting at least.

^Pretty much... I can handle having products marketed towards the gay demographic but this just... blech... As far as charity: "5% of profit from Gay Fuel will be donated to local AIDS related charities." That's 5% of profit, not sales. Better than nothing but still. Ingredients? Here you go: "Gay Fuel is pasteurized, has a great fruit flavor, is slightly carbonated and overcomes other energy drinks’ artificial taste. With the energetic goal of creating a superior product, Gay Fuel was formulated using the highest quality ingredients, such as real sugar as opposed to the less expensive and more commonly used corn-syrup. Ingredients Water, sugar, acidifying agent, citric acid, taurine, elderberry juice from concentrate, flavors, antioxidant: ascorbic acid, caffeine, carbon dioxide, guarana extract, lapacho extract, marapuama extract, damiana extract, ginseng, vitamins, niacin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B, vitamin B12"
  13. My magazine is working on an article on this project - here are some shots I took that day :-) The project literally encircles the new multi-purpose field/stadium. Some units have balconies that look right onto the field (some are on the 50-yard line!): Gooo kitchen! Inside the clocktower on the top floor - there's a cozy little lounge with this view (there's a Starbucks on the ground floor): View from a corridor: View of the clocktower:
  14. I'd have to add the accomplishments of Cleveland Public Art - the lighted bridges, the special events, the "name" people that they bring in for projects, etc.

Here's a rendering of Phase 5 (silver with blue roofs) from propertiesmag.com: Looks like the new building will surround the Cantina building but leave plenty of it exposed if that makes any sense.
  16. Folks - the main (operative word, *main*) reason Progressive didn't go through was because it was "a business decision made by the Progressive board when Al Lerner was chairman". I'm not at liberty to discuss my sources for that - but trust me when I say they're legit.
  17. "at the time union terminal was the largest excavation project in the world outside of the panama canal (or something along those lines, i'm sure mayday will correct me)" Nope - you're absolutely right! :-)
  18. It's not something I usually bring up during conversation but due to some inner-ear/equilibrium issues stemming from childhood medical problems, I'm not able to ride a bike :-(
  19. *yawn*... car-free for three years and still going strong :-) Honestly though, I've jokingly considered if a Segway might make some errands a little easier
  20. OfficeMax to leave Shaker Heights SHAKER HEIGHTS – OfficeMax announced Monday that it will move its retail headquarters to Illinois. The company had operated two headquarters, one in Itasca, Illinois, since Boise Cascade purchased the office supply company in December, 2003. The company plans to leave Shaker Heights in 2006. Mayoral candidates sound off Friday, August 12, 2005 Susan Vinella Plain Dealer Reporter Several Cleveland mayoral candidates said at a forum Thursday night that they would support or consider supporting a repeal of the 23-year-old law that requires city employees to live in Cleveland. David Lynch, former Euclid mayor, called the residency rule unconstitutional. Former Cleveland Safety Director James Draper and attorney Michael Nelson said they would be willing to consider a limit on the number of years city employees must live in Cleveland. http://www.cleveland.com/ ..... A few comments... several candidates have lost my vote already. If the city's good enough for your paycheck, it's good enough for your residence. Once again, no candidate has offered anything insightful or innovative to address education issues, and Lynch's suggestion of segregating students by sex is quite possibly one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. Draper's suggestions of community meetings? Greeeat, talk it to death, townhall it ad nauseum at taxpayers' expense and come up with the same results

"If the city's good enough to put a paycheck in their pocket, then it should be good enough to live in," 'nuff said.
  23. Dan, not sure if it would help but I believe the garage at 630 Prospect has surveillance cameras. You may want to check - if they do, that could help find the perp. Here's a pic of 515 Euclid from about 30 minutes ago (August 10th). I've been holding back on commentary until the finished product but here's my take. It seriously looks like the developers cheaped out compared to the renderings. The clear glass, reflective glass, granite facade, beige concrete, and red accents clash horribly. There are small "nooks" along the base which serve no purpose but will collect windswept litter. A big concern is a nook along East 6th Street which, if anyone remembers the previous buildings, became a panhandler perch. The granite facade is nearly identical to that of AT Tower and we've seen how well that aged. Even though it's "only a parking garage", any structure at this prominent corner should be held to high design standards and it's rather obvious that this wasn't. Is it nice compared to other garages? Yes, but that's not saying much.
  24. They've been doing a series on interesting office space/buildings for the last year or so.
  25. Easily one of the most beautiful interiors I've ever experienced:
