Remnants of Detroit Avenue Bridge over Rocky River now site of stylish offices
Here's a link with some not-so-great pics - I just LOVE it when people put "Glamour Shots" halos around pics  Nevertheless - it's a really cool building and use of the bridge structure. http://www.lamigrubb.com/projects/bridge.html

Cleveland Flats / Ohio City Development - Stonebridge
Nothing yet - I was there on Saturday and there wasn't anything like construction equipment at the site. I'll keep you posted, though.

Cleveland Public Schools: News and Discussion
I'm not sure if this is necessarily a good or bad thing. The fact remains that the schools have shown improvement under her watch - on the other hand, she wasn't the best at convincing people that accountability was valued. From wkyc.com Cleveland schools CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett says she's leaving POSTED: Friday, August 05, 2005 11:31:20 AM UPDATED: Friday, August 05, 2005 12:08:46 PM CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Schools CEO says she’ll leave after her contract expires next month. Barbara Byrd-Bennett says she’ll stay on the job for up to a year while a replacement is found. She said at a school board news conference today that voters’ rejection of a tax issues on Tuesday isn’t a factor in her decision to step down. Sixty-five percent of voters rejected the Cleveland district’s $46 million request. School leaders in Cleveland have laid off about 1,400 people in the last two years and permanently closed 11 schools when classes ended in June. Byrd-Bennett says she’s considering several jobs in the Cleveland area. She came to Cleveland from New York in 1998 with a reputation for turning around dilapidated schools and poor-performing districts.

Whoever designed this deserves a beatdown - what a piece of garbage!

Cleveland: Downtown Office Buildings Updates
"I haven't seen word one from the PD on this. Was there anything in Scene or Free Times?" 1. The PD is too busy being scooped on the Nate Gray scandal. 2. Scene isn't interested in business news, unless there's some salacious dirt behind it. 3. Free Times wouldn't dare print something positive - don't you know that good news isn't 'cool'?

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
"Representatives for the Cavaliers argued that incorporating a company logo on a building is different from designing a store sign." No sh!t, Sherlock - do they have f#cking clue who the members of the Design Review Board are? Most are practicing designers/architects who have been in the business for years. It doesn't help matters that Quicken still uses a "swoosh" in their logo - how '97 can you get?

I *thought* I heard it would be about 50¢ a day, but don't quote me on that.

Cleveland to Canada Ferry
Okay, I'm not familiar with the area so I'll ask - when the ferry service is available, could one conceivably board the ferry, arrive in Port Stanley and take some form of rail transit to downtown Toronto? Please say yes

Welcome to Cincinnati's Gritty "Gayborhood" revisited with 48 new photos
"They look exactly like "normal" people" Oh no, we simply can't have that! Well that rules out my ever moving to Cincy! I'm too old to have to take the time and guess if they know the 'secret handshake'! I've been to Northside and like others have mentioned, it's a neat area. I loved stopping in Shake It Records, and had some fantastic meals at Boca. A good friend of mine used to work at Paris (the tiara people) so I'm pretty familiar with the area. That said, it's the scruffiest of the major 'gayborhoods' in Ohio's Big 3 (Short North in Columbus, Edgewater/Clifton in Cleveland). I wouldn't ever want the area stripped and sanitized of its charm but I think it needs a little more polish.

Cleveland: Shoreway Boulevard Conversion
^I agree - imagine having a loft-style condo in the Westinghouse building and having access to a rooftop deck there. Unimpeded views of both the lake and downtown that currently only exist in the Gold Coast. I think in some cases they may extend some of the streets northward to create the intersections. If they didn't they'd have to mow down places like Tillman Park, etc. and I doubt that's the plan.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
Although Pittsburgh's new convention center is a wonderful piece of architecture, it is a good example of how new facilities are money-losing propositions from the day they open.

Cleveland: Office Max News & Info
THIS is exactly why I am glad that Mike White isn't in office. There has never been this level of cooperation, especially concerning economic development between Cleveland and its suburbs.

Cleveland-Lakewood: Enhance Clifton Transit Project
As a non-transit geek but as a user and armchair observer, I'm just glad to see an emphasis on transit returning to Clifton Blvd (instead of the 7-8 lane car bonanza that it is now). As some have said, it isn't much of a stretch to see BRT become LRT and I'd think Clifton would be a perfect place for that to happen.

Cincinnati: West Chester - Ikea Coming to Union Centre
Jen, welcome to the forum! Thanks for the info about your IKEA site - it's very informative. As a fellow designer, I first came across verybigdesign.com about a year ago - I am just blown away, you are truly gifted and talented! :-)

As a car-free resident who uses the 55, I'm thrilled to hear that service will be improved via BRT.

Cleveland: Ontario Pointe Office Building
I'm going to suggest some possible reasonings why KJP's proposal (which is brilliant, btw) was given a chilly reception. 1. There is a Rapid Station located at Tower City Center. 2. There is an enclosed walkway from the Rapid Station at Tower City Center which leads to this area. 3. If Rapid riders had the option of KJP's proposed station, they wouldn't be forced to walk through the walkway from Tower City Center. 4. If the riders weren't forced to walk from Tower City Center, Tower City Center might lose foot traffic. 5. If Tower City Center lost foot traffic, they would lose out on potential customers for The Avenue (shopping center at Tower City). 6. They would also lose out on Rapid riders who might prefer to disembark closer to the southern portion of the CBD. 7. The owners of Tower City Center are in very tight with the Cleveland Growth Association. Is anyone else connecting the dots? Methinks something is rotten at 50 Public Square.

Cleveland: Ontario Pointe Office Building
Not quite - if you check the web site, there's a parking area just north of the building (still on that small patch of land).

Cleveland: Ontario Pointe Office Building
The sign for that project has been there for ages - good to see they might actually be moving on it. More info at http://www.ontariopointe.com/Why_Ontario_Pointe.asp

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
Columbus is actually at 1.7 million square feet. Keep in mind, that's not maximum contiguous exhibit floor space (which is substantially smaller). The 300K figure for Cleveland would be the contiguous exhibit floor space for the main area, with ballrooms and meeting rooms supplementing that number.

Cleveland: 2005 Mayoral Election
For those of you who are enamored with Mike White's performance, I strongly suggest you read this article: http://www.clevescene.com/Issues/current/news/kotz.html Don't get me wrong, he accomplished a lot during his tenure - but I think it's a matter of time before everything catches up to him. :|

Cleveland: 2005 Mayoral Election
"And then there's the whole school levy issue. Oh yea that's a great idea, raise taxes and just keep throwing more and more money at a failing school system." Until school funding is made to be distributed fairly on a STATEWIDE level - Cleveland Public Schools (which apparently you haven't noticed have shown some improvement over the years) has NO choice but to seek a school levy. You ARE aware that the current method of school funding in the state of Ohio has been ruled unconstitutional FOUR times, aren't you? So what would you suggest, allow the schools to further decline and hope that the current students can hang on until the state gets their act together? Until the people in Columbus get it worked out - we, as the residents of the city of Cleveland owe our kids (and I'm not a parent) the best education they can get. "Jane says she wants more buisness and more ppl to live in Cleveland, and then she's trying to cut off their arms and legs with taxes." So you neglect to mention the current 15-year, 100% property tax abatement on all new construction in the city. You also neglect to mention the recently approved job creation tax measure which will reward companies (large AND small) for creating jobs within the city. "It's time for some new leadership and that's why Clevelanders should look toward people like James Draper and David Lynch." Again I ask, as a taxpaying resident of the city of Cleveland - what revolutionary ideas do Draper and Lynch have? What compelling reasons are there that I should give them my vote - OTHER than the fact that they aren't Jane Campbell?

Cleveland: 2005 Mayoral Election
There's a Rosecliff Road just west of East 185th which would be North Collinwood if I remember correctly. "There is a dire need to improve Cleveland Public Schools, reduce the crime rate and revise tax structures to make it easier to do business in Cleveland." Yet another candidate who brings nothing new to the table other than a talent for pointing out the obvious - good lord at this rate *I* should run because I believe: 1. We need to improve Cleveland Public Schools. 2. We need to reduce crime. 3. We should make our city business-friendly. The challengers have to step it up - the city's finances were recently given a clean 'bill of health', there are substantial development projects in the works, school test scores are slightly up, etc. so saying that the Campbell administration has done nothing is disingenuous to say the least.

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway: Battery Park
The last time I was there (about a month ago), the small building next to Snickers (just south of it, actually) was for sale. I wonder if Snickers would be able to expand into that?
-
Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway: Battery Park
Snickers has been there since *before* the demolition of the Everyready site (imagine driving down 76th and seeing nothing but that wall of the abandoned factory - yikes!). The food is pretty good, moderately priced (entrees anywhere between $10 and $20), drinks are good, and their patio is great. The downstairs bar has a very 'clubby' feel and the upstairs dining area is a dimly lit but classy space. The clientele is usually about 80% gay on any given evening, particularly in the summer.
