  1. "18 story Apartment Bldg on W 3 and Lakeside" :-o :-o :-o Stop the presses!!! When you say West 3rd and Lakeside... do you mean the site formerly known as the proposed Doubletree Hotel location? Dish, please! :-)

Hey folks, it's your weekly "look at the two new windows" photo of the Pinnacle - grand opening in less than 10 days:

"lol.. this is definetly not the middle of nowhere" That's a matter of opinion - I personally think it's Chardon West but what do I know

Bah... just supersize the Lorain (Hope) "Guardians of Transportation" a la the statues in Gondor (from Lord of the Rings) Imagine the Guardians at a few hundred feet!

A co-worker of mine is selling his home in a western outer-ring 'burb and moving to a condo downtown. He's sick of the maintenance, the commute, etc. Then again, why any single gay man needs a 3,000 sq. ft. McMansion in the first place is beyond me. "So how many of us urbanites, who want to move back into the city, are willing to move into an area that had been so thoroughly damaged by sprawl so as to create open land for new housing" That's a good question but I'm spoiled to my (our) neighborhood - I couldn't and wouldn't live in an area like Glenville or Quincy.
  6. So far, Stonebridge consists of: 1 30ish unit building 1 150ish unit building 1 condo building (the new tower) 1 office building And the proposed office building next to the old Carnaval is part of Stonebridge. As far as the street level... the buildings work and look better in person than in the renderings. No, there aren't stoops or street-level retail but the structures do sit low enough that... well, it's better experienced in person. Security issues are no doubt a reason - you have St. Malachi's right next door and the inordinate amount of homeless along with Lakeview Terrace (not the senior apartment tower, the low-rise projects). As the area is still very much in transition, I don't blame the developers for going the way they did - again, we aren't talking about a multi-story garage podium.
  7. Am I the only one who is completely unimpressed with the design for the new heart center at the Clinic? They hype it up as the epicenter of their globally known flagship speciality and all they can come up with is a quarter-round wall of glass? This thing won't be any taller than the Crile building so it's not as if this could fly as the new 'signature' building of the Clinic. It's uninspiring and the huge plaza doesn't add anything as viable public space. Who is the architect?

The Chamber - haha, that's awesome... I've been there a few times. Not a lot of gay guys listen to (or like) industrial music so I haven't been there in a long time. About the Hawk, you're right, but I know some of the forumers - and I wouldn't EVER wish the Hawk on them ;) Mind you they wouldn't have to pay for a drink the entire night but :-o Twist was atrocious before they re-did it - it's too small of a place to have a true dancefloor. The new layout is much better and I love the front 'garage' doors in the summer with the patio on Clifton. If you go back, you probably won't see any shirtless types, and the basement lounge is pretty mellow.
  9. "Before the Arcade buildings could come down, Staub would have to get approval from at least three city boards — the Landmark Commission, the Plan Board and the City Commission." And if ONE of those city boards even thinks of approving demolition - shame on them! We aren't talking about some historic horse shed here - I hope the preservation folks are all over this!

Basically I live about one-half mile east of KJP and one street north in a 1920s Tudor-style apartment building. Fortunately I don't have to pay the outlandish RITA (suburban income tax) that he does. Oh, KJP - just so no one gets confused - the Hawk is a... um... well... it's a neighborhood bar alright but more geared towards "my people" of the blue-collar variety

Yep, it's the usual update - a few more windows filled in. As slow as it's taking, I have to say there's noticeable progress even with the cold weather:
  12. Hey, glad you like the forum - and by all means feel free to keep us updated on Ytown! :-)
  13. "Youngstown has come a long way,our downtown is over 40% BRAND NEW..." Can we have a source for that statistic? "182 million dollars of worth of new schools........42million dollar CONVOCATION CENTER..." Those are good things, that's for sure. "3000 jobs added in the city limits in the last 10 years..." 300 jobs a year for a city with a population of 80K? Sure it's a start but umm... "The OU SOONERS Head COACH IS FROM YTOWN" So? "ASU HEAD COACH MIKE STOOPS FROM YTOWN" So? "49ers owners born and raised in the city live in a suburb of Ytown" Well, they have one of several homes in a suburb of Ytown. "Carmen Policy past president of The 49ers and The Browns born and rasied" And what's he done for us lately? "Ed O'neil Actor of Married with children was born and raised in YTOWN" Loved the show - but how does that make Ytown a better place? "OHIO STATE HEAD FOOTBALL COACH here for 15 years won 4 National CHAMPIONSHIPS" Good for OSU - but how does that help Ytown now? Before you take my comments too seriously -1. I'm really just busting your chops, and 2. I love Youngstown, despite the problems. The thing is - while it's great that some well-known people have come from Youngstown, that alone doesn't make the city a better place. Now, what I like about Youngstown: And if I had photos - I'd add the old Wyld Stylz store on Market, the Crystal Room at the Wick-Pollock Inn, and a Februarys or Boogieman Smash show at Cedars.
  14. ^You know, that might be a great idea for when we have our forum meets (we also get a good turnout from the skyscraperpage.com forum - lot of us overlap there). I checked out your band's site, btw - if you're the guitarist, I'm pretty sure we go to the same health club. Small world...

^You aren't kidding, Frank - I'm guessing they'll say "oh we meant, first occcupancy by February 15th". They better hope for some good weather days. Updated pics from 01/16/05:
  16. In theory it's well-intended but it needs to be a simple grass-roots consumer effort. In fact, I've heard of groups who agree to meet in a local area and spend the day shopping. Sounds silly but the merchants appreciate it.
  17. KJP, just out of curiosity have you ever approached a publisher with your manuscript?
  18. "and the "circled" hotel portion, isnt that just an add on onto the post office down there?" No, although I can see why you might think so. This would be across Huron Road from MK Ferguson/Old Post Office. It looks as though they'd build over or around the enclosed walkway to the Federal Courthouse tower.
  19. ^That's why I was wondering... it's great to hear that he's able to expand. If anyone in Cleveland has a following, it's him. It'll be great to have Lola-esque lunches :-)
  20. I love Lola as well - I just wonder if Symon is opening a new spot or if he's relocating from Tremont? He did get his start in the Caxton Building, just a few blocks east of East 4th.
  21. See the red circle? That's the hotel component of the original Forest City proposal:
  22. Unfortunately, the previous renderings for the Tower City site showed the hotel situated just south of MK Ferguson Plaza/east of the Federal Courthouse tower. It looked to be more of a midrise (i.e. below 400 feet) than anything else. This link shows the initial rendering http://www.wkyc.com/news/news_fullstory.asp?id=6410

First update of the new year - from Jan. 4, 2005:
  24. ^I truly hope I don't offend anyone by saying this but affluent modern-day evangelical Christians aren't prone to demonstrate sensible urban planning. When's the last time you saw a 'mega-church' built in a city core atop a well-designed parking garage near a transit-friendly area?
  25. Talk about under the radar - Toledo needs to really market this area. I knew about the Old West End mansions but never once heard about Toledo's Warehouse District. "I do think Toledo was a pioneer in loft conversions here in Ohio as I think they redeveloped an old downtown department store into lofts a few years ago, before this trend hit Dayton in a big way." When did Toledo renovate the department store? The reason I ask is that in Cleveland, the Bradley Building (one of the first conversions in the Warehouse District) was rehabbed in 1985.
