  1. Just some photos to show the progress thus far: In the beginning - you can see they've blocked off the site with Jersey barriers and have started to take down the billboard atop the building: Well into demolition: And most recently, the crane appears to begin construction of the parking garage. The cool thing is that with the crane's presence you can get an idea of where the proposed 20-story tower would sit in the skyline (especially from I-77 northbound):
  2. Yes you did - I say we drink to that! :drunk:
  3. This project wasn't so much under the radar - there was a small article in the PD a while back (which discussed the tower portion briefly), and as usual ;) I posted a thread on the forum over at skyscraperpage.com. The architect is Richard Fleischman and Associates, architects of the Polymer Science building at Akron U, NOT the Akron Art museum. According to a friend who works at Ohio Savings Bank, there is a model of it "somewhere". I'll have to do a little more investigating :)

Found this pic I took of Youngstown's "Grande Dame" - I think it looks terrific at 224 feet, but would look just as good at 600+; I just love the lines and proportion:
  5. Almost every major city in Ohio has one - the pre-WWII landmark tower. Here's a few pics I've taken of my favorites, enjoy: Terminal Tower, Cleveland (708 feet, 52 stories, 1930): Carew Tower, Cincinnati (574 feet, 49 floors, 1931) LeVeque Tower, Columbus (555 feet, 47 floors, 1930) Yes, I know that Akron, Dayton, Toledo, Lima, and Youngstown have them as well - all in good time :)

"Well isnt the rockwell selling its condos as the most expensive ones downtown? like somewhere in the 500k-1million range?? i think that could be the issue..." Not at all - although they were planning to offer a select few units as "luxury penthouses" which would most likely sell for the upper-6 figures. The starting range was in the upper 200s with most units going betweeen 300K and 500K. Of course, the view of Key Tower from there would be nothing short of phenomenal.

I'm still astonished on an ongoing basis by the change in the built environment in downtown Cleveland (because of the residential construction/conversions). It seems like projects take forever but to look back at how things used to be - wow. I remember visiting in 1988 with a church group where we dished out soup to homeless people. That building is now upscale condos (a 900 sq. ft. 1 bedroom unit is currently listed at $160K http://pure.progressiveurban.com/propview.php?view=627 ). In the early to mid-1990s, my nightclubbing friends and I would briskly walk past several gutted and dilapidated buildings - those have been totally redone and West 9th Street is as lively as its ever been. The one thing I have noticed is that some of the projects have stalled, while others are going like hotcakes. The Rockwell condos are in need of more financing, but the Stonebridge tower is going up rather quickly.

"Im more of a pathetic slob, but im homosexual, so does that make me a ruralsexual?" Not at all, that just makes you a candidate for a makeover from your rainbow-tribe brethren!
  9. This would connect Rt. 62 (east-west route along the Mahoning/Columbiana County borders) near Alliance to Rt. 11 (north-south route from Y-town to East Liverpool), near North Lima - basically making a faster trip from the Canton area to Youngstown. 62/11 link pegged at $131.7 million By LARRY SHIELDS/Salem News staff writer SALEM - A $131.7 million application by the Ohio Department of Transportation to fund the U.S. 62 connector from Alliance to state Route 11 in Columbiana County is due at the Transportation Review Advisory Council (TRAC) Friday. The project is planned to link U.S. 62 north of Salem via four lanes to state Route 11 which cuts across the eastern edge of Columbiana and Mahoning counties. The eight-member TRAC panel, formed in 1997, uses a numbers-driven system for choosing major (more than $5 million) new transportation projects. ... http://salemnews.com/

I'm Shawn, I'm 31 (32 as of May 1st) and I'm the webmaster of clevelandskyscrapers.com. I'm a native of Salem, Ohio but I now live in Cleveland. My interest in cities and architecture started when I was very young and at one point I wanted to be an architect (my math skills aren't the best so that went out the window). My first memory of a "highrise" was a trip to Youngstown of all places! Once the internet came along, I started a site on geocities to highlight architecture in Cleveland. That site eventually snowballed into clevelandskyscrapers.com, and in 2002 I was contacted by the folks at Arcadia Publishing to author a book on architecture in downtown Cleveland.
  11. More construction pics of Key: In the foreground on the right, the former 1 and 33 Public Square buildings being demolished to make way for the Ameritrust Center (oops!). Key Tower in background on the left:
  12. monte, I'm almost positive that window washers have a union, so I'm going to guess they make around $30K to $50K... just a ballpark. pope, that was from the turnpike near Boston Mills (I think mapblast said it was about 28ish miles from downtown).
  13. Key Tower - 888 ft. to the top of the stainless steel pyramid, and the 60 ft. spire brings it up to the grand total of 948 ft. Built in 1991 as Society Center and designed by Cesar Pelli - 57 office floors plus six maintenance floors (in the pyramid). Also known as MayDay's home from 9 to 5, five days a week :D Detail shots Topping off: View from the top: Stupid window-washing things! From almost 30 miles away: [/img]
  14. Well okay so it never happened. It still was enough reason for me to buy the KPF book a few years ago and wouldn't you know the book just fell open on the scanner at work? It would have been 1198 feet/60 stories high, tallest in Ohio, blah, blah...
