Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
I walked by CLE Clothing around 8:30 - they were cleaning up and said the perp has been caught and was in jail. Just vandalized the place, didn't take anything.

CLEVELAND - Lunchtime meetup?
Depending on timing, I might be able to attend either lunch or happy hour but it's always tentative for me. I know there are some who are only available for lunch due to afterwork/family commitments... or as someone once said: Forumer: "Honey, I was going to go out to happy hour tomorrow - is that okay?" Spouse: "Happy hour? Um, okay - where and with who?" Forumer: "Well just somewhere downtown, with some guys I met... well, I haven't really *met* them... but they're on the internet, y'know..." Spouse: "Uhh, no - I don't know." Forumer: "I'm sure they're nice in person - I mean the one guy always posts photos of Meryl Streep and Joan Crawford, and then the one Admin always posts photos of axes and hatchets..." Spouse: (disapproving scowl) ;-)

CLEVELAND - Beast of Burton, to the Heights of Chagrin to the Fall of Downtown
Some photos from the East side, from Cleveland out to Burton and back and points in between, and of course some random photos thrown in the mix. Leaving Tremont via Clark Avenue, there's a great view of the Industrial Valley: Bridge supports for the now-demolished Clark Avenue bridge: One of the jackknife bridges in the distance, the I-490 bridge above: RTA Red Line Rapid station at East 55th: East 55th Street - lots of churches on this stretch, some were originally built as Jewish synagogues: Carnegie Avenue at East 55th and the "Will this redevelopment EVER get off the ground?" building: Approaching the Cleveland Clinic: New Cancer Center at the Cleveland Clinic: The recently rebuilt Cedar-University Circle RTA Red Line station: The charming Cedar-Fairmount commercial strip in Cleveland Heights: Typical residential along Meadowbrook: The impressive Church of the Saviour on Lee Road: The quaint commercial strip at Fairmount Boulevard and South Taylor Road: Bell tower of the First Baptist Church of Greater Cleveland: Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple - that architecture, oy vey! The domed church on East 55th? That's the former home to this congregation which left for Cleveland Heights in the 1920s and then to this location. The neighborhood might be more affluent, but what an ugly bunker of a building in a sea of asphalt. Ah well, on our way to Chagrin Falls - with a few exceptions, the larger homes and estates tend not to be visible from the road; old-school Cleveland wealth tends to be of the quieter variety. Fall color wasn't quite at peak but not bad: It's not Fall in Cleveland without a visit to the charming village of Chagrin Falls: And we're off to Burton to take in the sights and sounds of the Apple Butter Festival. En route, the headquarters of ASM International with its landmark geodesic dome: And here we are - the fall color seemed closer to peak the further away we got from the city: The festival is held on the grounds of Century Village, adjacent to the town square: Oops! Didn't see the sign until after the fact - oh well: You can take the guy out of Cleveland, but... Even here, sprawl encroaches on the agricultural areas - time to get back to Cleveland proper: I'll take this type of suburbia, thank you: Back to Cedar-Fairmount: The recently completed Cleveland School of the Arts: And one last skyline shot for that day: Onto those random photos - all this time I've had my "newer" camera, I had been meaning to pick up a filter but never got around to it. Took a few test shots to see if it helped. So far so good... Then there was one of *those* days - the days where I see how the sun is setting, how the clouds are dark and the fall air is crisp. I guess it not just the trees that get to enjoy that Fall color ;-) Hope you enjoyed!

CLEVELAND - Aired out and Red Lined with a shot of Whiskey from the East
September went by so fast, but not as fast as the US Airforce Thunderbirds from the Air Show, and then I got a chance to tour the proposed Red Line Greenway, a trackside trail along the RTA's Red Line right-of-way from West 65th to downtown Cleveland. Of course, there are some random photos thrown in for good measure. Ugh, reminds me of our landing at Laguardia in 2014 when the plane was getting bumped by the outer remnants of Hurricane Cristobal :-P Earlier this month, the angled section of the top of the Hilton took shape: The overlook on Mall B, quite popular during the warmer months: My company had a service day where we did some cleanup around the Urban Community School and the side streets, including by this church on West 44th. It was built in 1899 as Church for St. John's Evangelical Society, but is abandoned. I recall going to a wedding back in the mid-90s and the interior was pretty exceptional. The architects of this church also designed St. Procop's and St. Michael's school on Scranton. Hopefully it finds a worthy use in the near future: We were offered a tour of the Red Line Greenway - I was more than happy to check it out. Apologies for blurs, it was quite a bumpy ride in several spots. Under the Fulton Avenue bridge, the building in the background is the former Leisy Brewing Co., it's currently being renovated as a contract brewery. Can't have a trail in Cleveland without a cool railroad bridge! The twin spires of St. Wendelin's church on Columbus Road: Older catenary fixtures dot the trail route. Including this one which I think would make for a great logo for the trail :-) The West 25th Street station: The RTA Viaduct bridge ahead in the distance. Views from the RTA Viaduct: And time to head back. As for that shot of Whiskey - of course, Whiskey Island. I know I've posted photos from here before but the views have changed a lot in recent years. Volleyball courts - usually packed with league players, not today: The Hilton taking its spot in the skyline: Back downtown, before a quick stop by the Cleveland Clinic: New Holiday Inn at the Cleveland Clinic - meh architecture for a meh hotel chain: Site of the Health Education Campus - sorry about the reflection: Not all the new construction is large-scale projects: Hope you enjoyed!

Yes. I think they could do well even though the location is on the edge of the neighborhood, but they'll need to find their niche.

It's not paint, it's a vinyl material used to 'wrap' the vehicle. You'll want to add the transit agencies of NYC, Chicago, Boston, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Portland and plenty more to your list of practitioners of this "disgraceful" practice. As you can see from the first link, this has been happening with other transit agencies for years. If RTA wasn't doing the vehicle wraps to generate ad revenue, they'd be getting criticism for missing out. I'm a graphic designer by trade and I think the wraps add unnecessary visual clutter to the environment, especially if the ad's design is garish like the one you cited, but do you have a better suggestion that would be just as profitable? http://www.adweek.com/agencyspy/updated-with-photos-history-channel-wraps-nyc-subway-to-offset-mtas-financial-woes/2816 http://www.transitchicago.com/advertising/#photos http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2012/02/22/good-question-how-do-they-wrap-ads-on-lrt-cars/]http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2012/02/22/good-question-how-do-they-wrap-ads-on-lrt-cars/]http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2012/02/22/good-question-how-do-they-wrap-ads-on-lrt-cars/- Cleveland: East Side Neighborhood Development
So how many times should 'felon' be mentioned for you to be satisfied? Should it be in all caps any time the word appears. I think it says the blogger gives readers enough credit to know what most people have known for quite some time rather than beat everyone over the head with it.- Cleveland: East Side Neighborhood Development
^They've always been upfront about who they work with: http://edwinsrestaurant.org/institute/mission/- COLUMBUS - Frankly Joseph, I don't give a Ton
Made an overnight trip to visit friends in Columbus, would have enjoyed another day but it wasn't in the cards. We hopped over to the Short North, checked out the Joseph hotel and then the Urban Scrawl festival in Franklinton: Although I'm not a fan of expanding highways every other year, I'm happy to report I-71 is now three lanes in both directions. No more getting stuck behind two slowpoke tractor-trailers! This building has always been a "almost there!" landmark for me: About eight miles north of downtown: Our friends live in German Village but we had to stop, drop and roll off to dinner. We were going to check out the Pizzuti Collection but we were too pressed for time. Even so, the public areas of the hotel have an impressive display: We had dinner at Guild House inside the Joseph - highly recommended: The next thing we knew, it was an absolute torrential downpour - fortunately it passed quickly so we decided to keep our plan of checking out the Urban Scrawl festival. This event reminded me of a grittier City Xpressionz, an aerosol art festival that Cleveland Public Art (now LAND Studio) used to produce several years ago. I always enjoy the diverse crowds these events tend to draw. A lot of the artwork was covered by tarps due to the storm, but it got hopping again pretty quickly. Start 'em young I guess! :drunk: The indoor component was held in this grungy building - added a cool vibe, imho: As usual after a heavy storm, it was a beautiful clear evening - wish I had my tripod but oh well: The next day we grabbed brunch at Milestone 229 on the Scioto River - very nice place in a very cool spot. I'd love to check it out again when the adjacent trail system is completed. En route, a few shots of the southern end of the CBD: Views from the restaurant: View of the restaurant: "Herb, cleanup on Trail 5!" Hope you enjoyed!- Sedamsville, Cincinnati, OH

- CLEVELAND - August Observations
Yet another random assemblage of photos from here and there, taken in August: Redevelopment of Public Square is taking shape: Over to the eastern CBD: Quick clip from the Shoreway Did someone say observation... deck? Figured I'd head up to the Terminal Tower observation deck with the new-ish lens: Can't wait until the Scranton Flats trail connects to University Road - trail + Sokolowski's University Inn = pierogis and carb burning all in one! :-) Yuck. In 1988, this building was home to the Rescue Mission and I was doling out soup to those in need. Now the residential units in it are being rented for thousands of dollars for the RNC... who'da thunk?!? The 9 (former Cleveland Trust Tower) cleans up rather nicely: The much-maligned University Square shopping center in the distance: The deservedly beloved Shaker Square neighborhood in the distance: The Cleveland Thermal Plant - not long for this world: Downtown Lakewood in the center, steel mills in Lorain on the horizon: Alright, back down to earth with a pic of the ArtCraft Building: And skyline views from the Innerbelt: The construction on the Hilton started to get interesting with this section jutting out: En route to checking out the Flats East Bank: There's still work to be done but I think it will be really impressive once it's built-out. Getting glassy on Lakeside: Let's wrap it up from the eastern CBD: Hope you enjoyed!- Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion

As much as I'm loathe to make comparisons, as not every city has the same circumstances - having been to Portland's Pearl District, I am absolutely in favor of keeping the remaining historic buildings in the Flats. In both cases you're talking about a waterfront area with a working class history and to varying degrees, the remains of that history's built environment. In some spots in the Pearl District, there's a good mix of older brick buildings and new residential construction - and in those cases, it just *feels* right. In other spots, it's all newer residential and even with street level retail those specific areas felt lacking.- Hyperloop
^^I agree on the goal of dependable regional rail service. However, as someone who loves to travel and doesn't mind flying but absolutely *hates* turbulence with the heat of a thousand suns, the idea of a 4ish hour flight (CLE to LAX, LAS and PHX where friends and family live) becoming a 2ish hour trip with no turbulence? Are you kidding me - sign me up yesterday!- CLEVELAND - Lunchtime meetup?
"Is Heinen's already too cliche?" If anyone thinks that, they need to remember how many *decades* that gorgeous space was mothballed. Sure, it's popular but I hope Cleveland never gets to the point where "pfft... it's a grocery store with a pretty ceiling". As far as a meet-up, the first floor is a bit hectic but the second floor is a little more sedate and conducive to conversation with high-top tables, etc.- Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
