  1. Agreed - if this was proposed for the site where the Renaissance Hotel sits, *then* I'd say they need to pay homage. I posted the following on the skyscraperpage.com forum- "You have all this interesting 'texture' going on with the base and the apartment tower balconies... then the skybridge is just a flat glass facade? I see in the renderings they show some of the cross-bracing but that will only be visible at night, if at all. They said the skybridge is an homage to the historic bridges along the Cuyahoga River - well, I get that they want "sleek" for the development, but this is just *too* sleek, it needs more heft to it. 'Sleek' doesn't have to mean a flat glass curtain wall. I'm not an architect or engineer so no idea if it's feasible but I think if they played up the structural components of the bridge (i.e. Foster's HSBC Building in Hong Kong), that would help the design a *lot*. Then there's the question of the office building (the shorter tower) and what it will look like, and how the skybridge is incorporated. Right now, it just looks arbitrarily placed there without any thought to how those components interact. It's early on in the development and I'm sure the project will be revised as things progress but that's my take for now.
  2. At first glance, I like it but don't love it; going to continue the cautious optimism.
  3. Yeah, glad whenever I visit the in-laws, we stay near Old Town Scottsdale (not that it's an urbanist paradise, but still).
  4. Someone needs to tell Key's marketing team just because they CAN slap their logo somewhere, doesn't mean they SHOULD.

My thinking with Perk Park (or the patch north of the Hampton Inn) is that it's adjacent and in a few blocks walking distance of an existing and growing residential base that seems like a more family-friendly area of downtown. The other areas such as the Science Center... I still think they'd be a great addition to downtown but I wonder if they're too isolated at the moment? Maybe there's a way to put both a small/local spot close in and a larger/"destination" type of facility around North Coast Harbor? I think either or both would be a great addition - and I haven't mentioned it in a while but thank you to all the folks who contribute to this thread. I'm not ever going to have kids but I certainly see the value in making the city more appealing to young families and hopefully this section has helped at least start or facilitate discussions. rockandroller, as far as the parking costs and not being able to know until you're onsite - agreed, but that's not unique to Cleveland. As far as branded parking signage - yep, the universal standard is a blue/purple circle (or slight variation thereof) with a white letter "P". So yes, I know what you mean, but speaking of knowing - not trying to be snarky but just pointing out a few things ;-)

^^If you mean a giant slab of pavement for parking, there are three large garages in adjacent blocks. Then there's metered parking all around Perk Park and adjacent side streets.

I work next to Perk Park and even without playground equipment it seems popular with younger families.

Not sure how much space would be needed or any details of current ownership but maybe Settlers Landing, or the small lot north of the Hampton Inn at Rockwell, or the patch adjacent/east of the One Cleveland Center garage?

I might be able to do lunch at Al's on Tuesday.
  10. LAexodus, welcome to the forum and best of luck in your search.

To each their own, and there are dozens of beers out there that I really enjoy but GLBC's Burning River Pale Ale is *my* beer. Not sure what exactly sets it apart from the dozens of other pale ales I've tried - none quite have that intangible that Burning River has. The closest I can think of is Dales but even that doesn't have whatever it is that Burning River has - I'm not a homebrewer nor do I care enough to dissect the ingredients but something GLBC does with Burning River just works with my palate. I've heard some say it skews more IPA as pale ales go? Or, maybe it's like the packaging reads - "our American Pale Ale combines a citrusy Cascade hops flavor with a fruity assertiveness" - a beer that combines a little bitterness with fruity assertiveness? No wonder I feel a kinship there :-D
  12. "I was at the market Mon, and it was an absolute madhouse trying to get in and find parking." The Monday and Saturday before Christmas, it's *going* to be a madhouse with people picking up the big dinner items. Also, there's a presumption that everyone who parks at the Market and goes in the Market is a paying customer. Plenty of people stop in for nostalgia's sake but never buy anything, especially this time of year when people are in from out of town. I'm a regular at the Market but you won't see me there after 10am on *any* day because I know how the crowds get. I understand the vendors' frustrations but as others have said - the city proposed a possible compromise and got all kinds of flak from the vendors. Well - the folks at the city are far from perfect but at least they made an effort to find a solution.
  13. No, the title is not a result of my having too many Christmas Ales, just referring to the former National City Bank banking hall in the Guardian Building, a trip to the Rock Hall and of course, the 5K/10K for the Christmas Story House Foundation. There might be a few other random shots thrown in :-) Turns out PNC moved their retail branch from the historic Guardian Building to a new spot inside the PNC Center office tower. I managed to get some shots before they closed - didn't have a tripod so apologies for the blurs. It sounds like it may end up being a restaurant? Out for some fresh air and over to MetroHealth hospital. I'm guessing this isn't up to code? :wtf: Hey, there's the first place I lived when I moved to Cleveland proper: Like I said - some random shots thrown in: Back downtown - the weather was making for some interesting lighting: The Guardian Building (aka where the first photos in the thread were taken): Love the details on the Huron Square building: Construction on the Hilton is coming along nicely: Let's pop over to the Warehouse District: The pop up stores at West Sixth and St. Clair: It's possible this view of this iconic building will be blocked in the near future  This view isn't going anywhere though  It's been a while since I've been to the Rock Hall, but family was visiting from out of town and they wanted to go. Glad we did. Janis Joplin's Porsche and a set of Van Halen's equipment: No talking smack about my Madonna :x Yeah, a standard mannequin isn't equipped with Beyonce's curves! The piano John Lennon used to write "Imagine": Who knew - fifty years later, I was on the staff of The Quaker Yep, I watched the debut - who would have thought it would no longer be *the* place for an act to gain notoriety? Again, no talking smack :x Hey! Teacher! And then it's time for the annual 5K/10K charity run for the Christmas Story House - the foundation uses proceeds for home improvement projects on the adjacent blocks. Of course, we start with the major award: The first batch of runners - no costumes, these people are serious runners: Hey, our first costume of the day - Black Bart! First Pink Nightmare of the day! Bonus points for the matching bunny slippers! Soap poisoning! (Told you not to use Life Buoy!) This poor lady had to endure about three hours of yelling "5K, straight ahead, 10K, to your right!" Cute couple's costume! We don't need no stinkin' Olympic torch, we have the 'soft glow of electric sex'! :-D Uh, wrong movie, sir - it's all good. I saw the American flag in the distance and thought '"cool, maybe it's a contingent supporting veterans?" Silly me, it's the Triple Dog Dare! :-D Hope you enjoyed - happy holidays everyone!
  14. Okay folks, this isn't the thread to discuss the merits of IKEA.
  15. Here you go - I'm not completely sure on this because of the bend on Prospect once it crosses Ontario.
  16. ^Next to the Justice Center.
  17. I revised two of my images to show the convention center hotel.
  18. jmicha, looking forward to your mockups - please post when you can :-) I took a rough try (very rough) at some different angles: TPH2, I think you might be right - I forgot East 4th bends halfway through the block, and I believe the taller tower is slated for the easternmost portion of the site: I'm just trying to get my brain around a new fourth tallest tower, so here's hoping :-)
  19. I can try later but I think this will fill in the gap between Key/200PS and Terminal Tower from I77 north (one of my favorite views aside from that gap).
  20. I'm hoping that rendering is just a placeholder graphic.
  21. Okay folks, this isn't the thread for the Justice Center site. Thanks!
  22. Does anyone in the know have an idea of when we'll see the crane jump?
