- NEW YORK CITY - Labor Day Weekend, Part II
The last thread covered a few different spots (Soho, Top of the Rock) - here's the link in case you missed it http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,29599.0.html This time, my partner and I realized during all our trips to NYC, we'd never been *in* Central Park - close to, but never actually in, so this time we remedied that. They're hardly the tallest buildings in the general vicinity but Time Warner Center certainly looks imposing when you exit the subway: 86F and humid... ah well, not going to stop us. The reclad on One Columbus Circle is atrociously bland - thankfully the Hearst building makes up for it... a little. Into the park we go! "Okay kid, swing for that Portzamparc over there..." "... or the Viñoly will do." My partner said "where are we going to have lunch?" - next thing you know, we came across the Ballfields Cafe - simple and quick; with good draft beer? Sign us up! 8-) Time to move along. We ended up in The Ramble, a heavily wooded spot - reminded me of the trails in Cleveland's Metroparks: And of course, the more popular sites like the sailboat pond: And the Alice in Wonderland sculpture: At this point, I was starting to feel the heat and humidity so we left the park in search of a spot to cool off. Of course, I wasn't too tired to take photos along Fifth Avenue: Uh oh, looks like there are leftovers from the foreclosure crisis? Who knew - in a few days, they'd be giving Joan Rivers' eulogy here :-( Then we saw the Plaza Hotel. My partner is the ultimate pug person and by default loves Eloise; I love pugs too and one of my all-time favorite movies is 'Big Business' starring Lily Tomlin and Bette Midler - the Plaza is central to all of that and we figured we'd at least check out the lobby. Who knew there are some cute shops and spots to eat? Guess we know now :-) Of course, the Sherry-Netherland isn't too shabby: Inside the Plaza: They had draped canvas since the Palm Court was under restoration - someone *might* have pulled those aside for a quick photo ;-) Across the way, the Solow Building with its ridiculous interaction with the street. See you next time, Plaza! My partner likes to check out Bergdorf Goodman; I like to laugh at a $475.00 t-shirt (no kidding on the price and yes I know who Junya Watanabe is) Don't get me wrong, it's a lovely store... As is Tiffany & Co. After all, Holly Golightly told us "I can't imagine anything bad ever happening at Tiffany!" I took a peek out the windows to check out the Crown Building: One redeeming thing about Trump Tower - in spite of the ridiculously proportioned public spaces, the air conditioning was working. Thanks Ivanka but we'll stick with iced coffee today: A brief stop back at our room at Trump Soho - 11th floor views, nothing spectacular but not bad: I love the building on the left, one of my favorites in Soho: Later that night we headed over to the Meatpacking District: Over to the High Line - as much hype as this place has received, I'd say rightfully so. Hey, let's grab a drink! Nope - this is an art installation; all the drinks were making fun of NYC 'archetypes': Interesting 'amphitheater' - if there isn't a performance, you can always watch traffic go by: Then it was a quick stroll around Soho on our last day: Ah well, time to grab a taxi and make our way to LaGuardia (btw, what a dump) Just some shots from the taxi en route to the airport: That's all I got - hope you enjoyed!- Cleveland: Downtown: Hilton Cleveland

^I'd take that with a grain of salt (city-data.com forums, specifically).- NEW YORK CITY - Labor Day Weekend, Part I
Over Labor Day weekend, my partner and I traveled to NYC for a wedding (not ours, not yet anyway!). Of course I took plenty of photos along the way. Flying into LaGuardia - apparently the fringe winds of Hurricane Cristobal were just reaching the area, which made for a bouncy approach and less than crisp shots. Ah well, at least we didn't end up with an "unexpected water landing" :| Unfortunately we were on the other side of the plane so I had to use the telephoto across the aisle - can't win them all, I guess. After a hard landing, we're all ready to get to our hotel - Trump Soho: Not every building is iconic. But c'mon, it's NYC! Finally on the island of Manhattan - I love being in the taxi and seeing which landmark buildings are off in the distance when we hit the cross-street: Here we are! Surprisingly tasteful (for Trump!) Skinny building going up a block away: Found a good divey spot with great happy hour deals and decent beer on tap  Over to the heart of Soho: We had hoped to get manicures at Bliss spa but they were booked - ah well, might as well get a shot of this adjacent cool space: A little more shopping in Soho: But it was a little warm, time to head back to the hotel: And hit up the pool - I was more interested in the views: Enough of the pool views, this is the view from the bocce court: Anyway, it was a long day with travel so skipping to the next morning, I go out for my usual early morning vacation walk: We've been to NYC several times, but this time I put my foot down and said we would go to the Top of the Rock. This was as close as we got to Times Square which was fine by me: Almost there! Woohoo!!! Okay, it's about time... To get back to earth: Or maybe we're going to heaven? As I always try to do whenever I'm on vacation and I see a historic house of worship - gotta see if they're open: Sure enough - and Mass was just wrapping up. And this was a cool moment: Gotta love the Helmsley Building! Uh oh, the trains weren't running local between Brooklyn Bridge and Union Square so we hopped off at Union Square - neat area: Heading back to Soho: Hey, it's just like being at home! That night we went to a few bars - the Standard and the Jimmy rooftop at the James Hotel; what a fun night - wish I had my tripod but I did the best I could. Next morning, I decided to go to the World Trade Center - the weather was appropriately somber: I hadn't been to the site in ten years - like millions of others, I lost it when the towers collapsed. Those emotions came rushing back that morning - I didn't go to the museum, I simply paid my respects the best way I know how and let my camera lead me. I then remembered - the last time I was here, it was 2004. Most of the rubble had been cleared but the damage to surrounding buildings was painfully evident. I had read about 90 West Street in a book and when I saw this, I gasped in shock. This day, I sighed with gratitude: I took that as a sign to move on: And time for the main event - our friends wedding at Sohi on the 46th floor of the Trump Soho. The views, the venue, the evening was just incredible. Again, no tripod and a rain shower passed by so these aren't the best or clearest shots but I did the best I could. Next up, Central Park, more city shots and the High Line.- Cleveland: Downtown: The 9 / Rotunda / County Admin Development

True story, I was working in KeyBank's marketing department when 'KeyToon' was created. They also had a giveaway of a KeyToon plush toy to promote the character - let's just say the first version wasn't quite clearly shaped as a key and got plenty of complaints from the more prudish customers.- Cleveland: 2014 Gay Games IX News & Discussion
I think this event and its success caused a lot of people (including Cleveland's LGBT community) to rethink their terms about our city. Everyone I talk to - there's a sense of "did we just pull that off, and it wasn't just okay, it was awesome on so many levels?!?". :-) Like you said Punch - in 2008 I poo-poo'd the idea of the Terminal Tower lighting going all "disco rainbow". Fast forward to 2014, on Friday night before the opening ceremony when the tower was lit normally, I'm calling in (texting) a favor for what? Yep... one of those times where I stand corrected and couldn't be happier.- CLEVELAND - Rebuilding and Rainbow Flags
The following are a hodge-podge of photos from lunch breaks, to Gay Games events, etc. For those of you who complain about waiting for an elevator at your office, imagine having to hike it up here (or down from!) in bad weather: These guys have a great view of the construction: Taking a break. The best things in life are...? Don't panic, the Free Stamp is undergoing a complete restoration - it's all good: A brief errand took us to Willoughby one weekend - I had my camera even though the forecasts weren't ideal. Sometimes that's okay. Fortunately, our summer hasn't been a washout - here are the crew prepping one of the installations for the AHA! lighting event coinciding with the Gay Games: I remember people wondering if the roof of the convention center would really attract people - looks like it did the day I snapped this pic (and then some during the AHA! event): Actually I've noticed a substantial uptick in pedestrian traffic throughout downtown this summer: Maybe, just maybe - things are finally looking up? One big draw this season is Walnut Wednesdays at Perk Park - even if the weather's bad, there's still a decent crowd. If the forecast is good, get there by 11:30 if you don't want to wait in a long line. Not that the east side of downtown has the monopoly on happening things - Phase II of the Flats East Bank: I wasn't able to attend any of the competitions at the Gay Games (just related events), but I definitely noticed quite a few businesses showing support and the pedestrian traffic had a slightly more 'FABulous' touch ;-) Speaking of rebuilding, workers at the Residences at 1717 (fka East Ohio Gas Building): Cornice rebuilding at the Swetland Building, part of the Geis development at East 9th and Euclid: Not to say that all of downtown is on the upswing - the Galleria; slated to be the new home of the downtown YMCA but until that gets underway :| But let's get over to the setup for the Gay Games Festival Village before the Friday night event gets started. I heard someone suggest that the corporate community wasn't supportive. For those who suggested that, I'd say a photo is worth a thousand words: I got nothing: Not a shabby backdrop if you ask me: Speaking of backdrops, let's backtrack a little - I got some skyline shots before the opening ceremony but didn't get a chance to post these, taken before the Terminal Tower was lit in the colors of the LGBT Pride flag: Let's track back to daytime - a quick stop at Tower City Center: Walking up Euclid: At Playhouse Square - not related to the Gay Games, just a game of cornhole. :-D Obligatory architecture shots: Finally, let's get over to the Festival Village again for the Friday night event - the headliner was Ana Matronic, lead singer of The Scissor Sisters, followed by Rob Sherwood, who has been a staple on the Cleveland club circuit - both did a fantastic job. Cleveland festivals tend to be a bit eclectic - here are some aerosol art pieces (well, one of them *might* be a Photoshop job ;-) ). This was a popular photo spot: Sun starts to set, the crowd begins to grow: I was kicking myself for not bringing a tripod - this shot could have been so much better but you get the idea: Ana Matronic - played a great but too short set: The rest of the night, we danced our tushes off to some great house music from DJ Rob Sherwood: Hope you enjoyed! - Cleveland: Flats East Bank
