  4. UPDATE: This gentleman from Kenya won the marathon, his career first! And see the two in black? They got hitched after the half-marathon! http://photos.cleveland.com/plain-dealer/2012/05/cleveland_students_join_rite_a_9.html
  5. "... half's now. A much more reasonable goal if you ever decide to try it." To reiterate... for all the people who for whatever diabolical reason decide to run 10k, 13.3 miles or the full 26 circles/miles of Hell, I say kudos, bless their hearts, more power to them - whatever gets them through the night, whatever trips their trigger and I admire the physical prowess it takes to do that. Some very good friends of mine choose to indulge in similar events and I'm happy for them. However, mark my words, at some point I may decide to exit a few of my various comfort zones, but running a half-marathon just to be able to say "woohoo, I did it!"? Um, no. Just not going to happen. I'm more than happy to take photos (and not lose a toenail or three doing it!) :-)
  6. So I decided to get up early on a Sunday to get photos of the 2012 Cleveland Marathon - luckily the route came through my neighborhood. I'm the first to say - I am NEVER going to run a marathon (don't give me that 'never say never' BS); while I appreciate the notion of 'I wanted to challenge myself' or whatever reasons people subject themselves to running a marathon, I applaud them but not for me. That said, kudos to the runners - hope you had a good run (though I couldn't imagine running that far unless I was being chased by a pack of wild hounds or being rewarded with a few million - but that's just me). Found a good spot - no runners yet, but a good shot of one of the landmark churches in Tremont - Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ: Nearby building used to be a local theater; been abandoned for years and now seeing new light - they recently installed this stained glass piece: I admit I'm not a runner - but I'm guessing these folks are clearing the route for the runners? I felt bad for this cop; West 14th is a primary route so he had to do a lot of motioning 'turn your @ss around' and giving people directions: After a while, we finally saw the first group of runners: I was around the 9-mile marker - and from what I gather the winners had the lead from the beginning - maybe this is one of them? Gotta say - if you're into just 'people watching', this is one heck of a place to do it: The first batch of women competitors: Did I mention I was close to the 9-mile marker? Got lots of shots of runners doing the 'how's my time'. I must admit, I didn't see anyone 'sweep the leg' but I can't attest to the rest of the route: With any event like this, there are always those who dress up and have a little fun - I wasn't quite expecting a monkey, but who am I to judge? Honestly if someone had informed me I'd just run 9 miles, I would not be quite as happy as this gentleman: Okay, I know it's early and I haven't had enough coffee but I'm seeing one of the Village People... right? I know that with marathons, races, etc. that participants will write messages, etc. to get a message out - what this guy's message was, I don't know, but I wish Colin well :-) Uh oh, I've been spotted! Watch where you're pointing that thing! :-o Okay, among the observations I make - from a distance, I thought this gentleman seemed a little older than the rest of the group. Sure enough, he's part of the 'Dead Runners Society' - who knew such a thing even existed?
  7. My favorites: CMA Summer Solstice - I had never been until last year's event; this brought together people from every disparate circle I run in. And every square foot of the whole, incredible museum was open to attendees, admitted on a progressive basis (high-priced ticket holders first, and so on). For me, this is now "a must attend" until I drop dead - it's that good. Taste of Tremont - You have the option to nosh and drink everything from Iron Chef spots like Lolita to newer (but terrific) places like Bac, Istanbul Grille, etc., to what I consider the best sources to get good food of any ethnicity - the local churches (Polish, Korean, Latino and everything in between - last year, La Iglesia de Primitiva had the best empanadas I've ever been blessed to taste), and the occasionally needed cheap drink and A/C from the local VFWs along Professor. Cleveland Film Festival - I know people who use a week of vacation days for this; I'm not in that camp but I definitely see why they would. I wish I had more time to see more films, but I'm glad to see how they've grown over the years. St. Patrick's Day - when I worked downtown, it would be great to go out for lunch, see the streets overcrowded, catch a glimpse of the parade and get back to work once people started getting a little too drunk and rowdy for my tastes. Now that I'm a little older and no longer working downtown, I can still appreciate an event that brings *that* many people downtown even though I wouldn't want to be anywhere near it at peak time :-) City Xpressions (RIP) - This was in my top 3, but this festival hit its stride right around the time the economy took a swan dive. For those who don't know, this was a festival held across from the West Side Market, where it was a mix of aerosol artists, b-boy/b-girl dance groups doing their thing and then the spillover crowd from the West Side Market.
  8. Folks, this ain't Yelp (thank god), so if you want to start a back-and-forth, take it to PM.
  9. Yep, on the eastern facade they've started to attach the supports for the casing - the light silver squares at each 'intersect' on the curtain wall - pardon the crappy quality, cell phone pic :|
  10. I'm pleasantly surprised at how the Medical Mart building facade is turning out:
  11. Ehh, can we see the first shot without the lens flare?
  12. Love it, thanks for posting those! :-)
  13. Okay folks, hope you've enjoyed the off-topic banter, but guess what it's time for?
  14. ^It's not an exact match, but that view bears a resemblance to the postmodern James Cancer Center at theOSU.
  15. Folks, some posts have been removed - some for their abrasive tone, others for further derailing the thread. No one's being singled out, just keeping things 'tidy'. If there are concerns or questions, anyone is free to create a thread in the 'Forum Issues' section. cleanup, welcome to the forum and to Cleveland - sorry for your bumpy start here, but I guess that can happen when you have people who are passionate about their city. That said, if you wouldn't mind - please post any future relocation-specific questions in a thread in 'City Life'. http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/board,30.0.html Back to the construction (or recent events like the book signing Murray Hill referenced) :-)
  16. SPOILER!!! "Don't forget under the Detroit Superior Bridge 'subway." Which scene was that?
  17. Sarcastic judgemental diatribes are off-topic; something you've received multiple warnings about.
  18. Just saw it today - wonderful job, and worth paying $17ish for seeing it in 3D IMAX. "Anyone see themselves or landmarks in the flick? I was honestly surprised to see just how much footage they used of/from Cleveland. I clearly saw: Terminal Tower (view from Public Square) Higbee Building Renaissance Hotel Park Building May Company Key Tower Society for Savings Building 75 Public Square 200 Public Square Public Square Soldiers and Sailors Monument Cuyahoga County Courthouse (interior shots featuring the rotunda, staircase and stained glass window) East 9th Street Former Huntington Building Ameritrust Rotunda (exterior and interior) Ameritrust Tower Rose Building (aka Medical Mutual) Schofield Building Ohio Savings Plaza 800 Superior (aka Keybank Center) PNC Center (distant) 1100 Superior (distant) Statler Arms Oh, and I saw Robin Swoboda playing a news anchor for a blip - I would have been far more happy to see Wilma or Ramona but oh well. That's off the top of my head - granted it was standing in for NYC and being blown to bits, Cleveland looked damn good in this film :-)
  19. Folks, this isn't the place for "I heard that _______ was opening here... but I can't remember any important details" rumors or speculation. If you're going to post, make sure you have a nominal grasp on the facts.

One of my absolute favorite spots in NYC - thanks for sharing pics of a lot of my favorites. Just a heads up, if we (the Admins) get contacted regarding their policy for photos of the artwork*, we'll have to remove the thread. :| *No photographs or videotapes may be reproduced, distributed, or sold without permission from the Museum."
  21. ^Thank you, X. And with that - if forumers want to discuss the architectural merits of whatever city's highrises, they're welcome to do it in a separate thread in an appropriate section. This thread will be pruned of off-topic posts in the near future.
  22. Look up a few not-so-recent pages in this thread for that.

I'm not sure what I find more interesting, the photos or the commentary - I guess I understand Glenville's gripes and I agree that some more descriptive text would be appropriate, just so those who aren't too familiar would know that these images represent a small area of our region. That said, these photos represent a part of our collective reality (those of us who are proud to call Cleveland 'home'). Ignoring the appalling conditions of our more downtrodden neighborhoods won't make them better, and neither will coddling the behaviors and whatnot that made them that way and continue to keep them that way.
