Retrospective: Interstate 275, Cincinnati's Outer-Loop (Ky.)
Hi, I would be interested in seeing more pictures of the I-275 construction through NKY if you could post them here or direct me to another site that has others. Thanks.... Steve And this post is being modified to include the following. Duh, I just noticed the link at the begining of this topic!

Lakewood, Ohio
Actually there is some debate to that issue. The circuits that power fire alarm boxes have an independent supply that is not affected by other utility outages. Cell phone, and all telephone systems can fail. Alarm boxes also do not have language barriers. When you pull the hook - the fire department will show up! Nice Lakewood photos and I'm happy to see the street box picture. If you want to drown yourself in fire alarm box photos and information, including some additional pictures from from Lakewood and other Ohio towns, you can always go here: Youngstown Fire Forums - Fire Alarm Discussion.

Lakewood, Ohio
The Lakewood fire alarm system is 100% functional. The box has a code wheel inside and when the hook is pulled the box number is sent to the fire alarm office/dispatch center via a telegraph circuit. I believe that Akron and Mansfield may be the only other cities in Ohio still using alarm boxes.

Urban Ohio "Picture Of The Day"
Florida Guy, Where is the building that is shown in your photo from March 8, 2008 located? Thanks, Steve

Cincinnati - Ghost / Faded signs
I don't believe that the Kay Furniture ad will be there much longer. That building along with the remaining factory/waehouse structures on Gest Street south of 8th are supposed to be coming down. "Leslie Ann Candies Try Some Today". Sounds like a good idea to me! This ad was on Colerain Avenue just north of Marshall in Camp Washington. This green and white beauty shared space with another ad that was peeking through in a few spots. I don't recall if time has taken it's toll on Leslie Ann or if the building has been painted, but I believe that this bit of local history is history. I'm now going on a hunt for chocolate...

Ghost Signs - Brick Walls Signs
hi Jerome, It's unfortunate that the signs can't be saved in any reasonable manner other than film. I like to visualize the interior of the American Sign Museum made out of original wall art! Of course 30 - 40 foot ceilings would be a must! Steve O.K. Two more. First is a sign on the business of Seigman & Wherleys in Glen Rock, Pennsylvania. They sold "Gents Furnishings Clothing Shoes". When photograhed the name on the sign over the door was down to just "Wherleys" while the newer sign advertised "Shoes Rubber Footwear Family Clothing PA Liscense Agent". The next ghost sign was on the rear of the building that was the location of the Farmers Union Supply Co. and Hardware in Versailles, Kentucky. Hy-Klas 100% Pure - the PAINT that LASTS You can just make out another sign to the right of the Hy-Klas ad. Something was 5 cents! (Most likely Coca - Cola).

Ghost Signs - Brick Walls Signs
This first sign is right to the point! Located in La Porte City, Iowa. Ghost sign advertising Boscul Coffee on East 3rd Street in Dayton, Ohio. Another wall sign was underneath the Boscul advertisement - you can just make out some of the lettering. I believe that this building has been painted and this great ad is only a memory.

Cincinnati - Ghost / Faded signs
Hi, This one is a little different - but you can still see a wall sign (it really is a ghost as the building it was painted on is long gone)! The fire engine is a 1918 Ahrens-Fox that was assigned to Squad Company 52 at 315 West Court Street (the station that Squad 52 was quartered in is now the Cincinnati Fire Museum). The building behind the fire engine (north side of Court Street) was previously a brewery (I can't remember which brand) and housed Louis Hellman & Co. Radios were oviously a big part of the Hellman inventory. This fire engine was also built in Cincinnati at a factory located at Colerain & Alfred Streets in Camp Washington. Most of the complex of buildings that made up the Ahrens-Fox plant are still standing, now in use as a self-storage warehouse. Several of the buildings in the A-F complex along Colerain Avenue were torn down for the construction of I-75. Steve

Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine, Part II
From what I recall, there was a two-alarm fire there in mid-December. The condo is condemned, but I don't think there are any plans on what to do with it yet. 2 alarm fire on December 15, 2007 at 10:20 p.m. There are 3 photos of the incident on the CFD History site. http://www.cfdhistory.com/htmls/incident.php

Ghost Signs - Brick Walls Signs
Krey HOT Sausage being advertised on a wall sign in Memphis, Tennessee. There were numerous ghost signs in this area just south of Downtown. Unfortunately it was extremely overcast when I was there and many of the signs were too faint to get a decent picture of.

Sharonville rejects Fischer Homes BY CARRIE WHITAKER | [email protected] The Enquirer February 12, 2008 SHARONVILLE – City Council voted unanimously Tuesday against a plan by Fischer Homes to build homes and condos on property occupied by a closed school and nature preserve on the city’s north side. Two council members urged Fischer to consider coming back to the city with a plan with fewer units. Controversy about the plan began in July 2007, when Fischer offered the Princeton School District $3.2 million for the 67 acres off Cottingham Avenue to build 89 homes and 196 condos. The school district liked the deal. Sharonville’s Planning Commission didn’t. They recommended denial of the proposal to change the zoning of the land to allow residential use. Before a large group of residents who braved the weather Tuesday night, council agreed with planners and turned down the development. MORE: http://www.enquirer.com

Cincinnati: Downtown - The McAlpin
As I recall the last grocery store that was Downtown was just to the north of this location along Race Street. Kroger pulled out of that spot in the 60's. There aren't any easy shopping locations for groceries if you're living Downtown. Kroger at 15th and Vine is the closet place and if you aren't interested in going to that store you really have to travel.

Ghost Signs - Brick Walls Signs
Cuba Ice Cream Co. - Cuba, New York My car had a flat tire while driving through Cuba a few years ago. This sign was just down the block from the service station where I had the new tire (the old one was punctured badly) mounted. I'm not sure if it was worth $80 to get off the highway for this photo.....

Cincinnati: Norwood - Linden Pointe on the Lateral
As soon as Governor Strickland signs the legislation there will be a requirement that a Starbucks is located no more than 500 feet from any new office building constructed. My thought is that the "Flatiron" building would make an excellent location for a perky retailer.

Cincinnati: Random Development and News
The building where Value City is today opened around 1966 (a year or two either way) as the Ontario department store. My dad had to go there the first night of business. As a result we were in a bumper-to-bumper traffic jam that began on Ridge Road just over the railroad tracks at Mapleleaf Ave. It must have taken 30-45 minutes to make it down the hill and into the parking lot. I'm confident that the Ridge/Highland traffic congestion began that evening and has never abated......

Ghost Signs - Brick Walls Signs
Rob & Jermore, I really enjoy seeing your photos. You've photographed some nice signs. I particularly like ads that have a person or animal (Owl Cigars) painted in them. Here are a couple more from me. Mowrystown, Ohio - Two Pepsi Cola signs on a single wall. (Deleted) Welch, West Virginia - Flat Top Bottling Company I always want to see more of these.... Steve

Ghost Signs - Brick Walls Signs
This thread is for brick wall signs (ghost signs) from any location. First up are 2 photos from a building in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania. The larger sign on the right is for King Midas Flour and has the figure of a child in the lower right corner. Signage across the bottom of the building reads "Louis Aranoff Warehouse Fine Rugs & Carpets Flour & Feed". I'm interested in seeing your photos! Steve

Cincy - Hidden History
Signs showing the former German names were placed on each of the dozen or so streets to be renamed. This was 20 or so years ago (hard to remember, the signs may have been erected for the Cincinnati bicentennial). The last time I was in Lower Price Hill the sign was still standing at Gest Street & Woodrow (named for a person who was rather prominent in 1918!).

Cincinnati - Ghost / Faded signs
Butternut Bread (painted over the former brand name of Butterkrust). This sign is on McMicken Avenue just east of Vine Street in Over-The-Rhine.
