  1. very very nice to see this going through
  2. ITS ABOUT TIME! LORAIN -- The Lighthouse Village plaza got the green light yesterday from City Law Director Mark Provenza. Liberty Development Co. of Westlake now can take out building permits and break ground for the retail plaza on the northwest corner of Leavitt and Jaeger roads, Provenza ruled yesterday. ...
  3. -its not the last natural land. a significant piece? mabye, but surely not the last. -i would love to see it built on one of the brownfields or downtown but good luck convincing the developer! - the fact is the stores don't do well in low income neighborhoods. They follow the money. -and the developers do it in SW Lorain for the same reason they do it in Avon Lake, Amherst, and Vermilion. People buy the houses. They buy the houses because of better schools, lower crime, better highway access and probably racism. From living in the area, I know the businesses will do exceptionally well, there is so much enthusiasm already building. Even with all the jobs lost, people still have money, they must be working somewhere... This is quite the little suburb forming here in SW Lorain/Amherst.. but good luck stopping the development, this is only the beginning.
  4. im not sure what your trying to say.
  5. LORAIN -- The Lighthouse Village development will move forward whether or not its opponents get a referendum on the ballot to overturn City Council's Nov. 21 rezoning of the land for the shopping center, city officials and the developer said yesterday. However, an opponent of the $40 million project disputed that the project could move forward without the rezoning council approved Nov. 21. ...
  6. To be honest with you guys, as much as I would like to see this development go through, I would even more like to see this get rejected by the voters in Lorain (as did Wal Mart). As you all know I live in Amherst (basically right across the street) so I personally would rather see these businesses get built on my side of the street and the taxes they generate go to pave MY roads. but thats just my two cents. I couldnt imagine Lorain, rejecting this but, who knows?
  7. ha you beat me to it! but anyone who has attemped driving on route 58 during rush hour knows that it cannot take the likes of Lighthouse Village AND Wal Mart AND the soccer academy. this is ridiculous its already a 5 lane highway! but it will be nice to have a Chipotle and Olive Garden right around the corner! im sick of driving to Great Northern.
  8. i know only about 2000 work there now but that is after severe job cuts in the past. does anyone know the max number of jobs this plant can handle? if some other manufacturer opens up shop, we could potentially be looking about job INCREASES?! you wouldnt buy a plant unless you intended to utilize most of the square footage.

Sewer plan slated for quarry complex Brad Dicken The Chronicle-Telegram ELYRIA — County Commissioners approved spending $231,000 to engineer and design a sewer system to accommodate a 900-acre residential and entertainment complex in South Amherst and Amherst and Brownhelm townships. Wednesday’s decision moves the $1.25 billion project one step closer to reality, said county Administrator Jim Cordes. “We’re taking a risk because we’re talking about a large future development,” he said. “If we don’t take any risks, we don’t get anywhere.” Trans European Securities, the European company planning the complex, has already purchased a significant portion of American Stone, the company which owns Cleveland Quarries, where the project would be located. TES had purchased the rights to buy the site in 2004 for $24 million, but instead decided to simply buy up American Stone instead. But Cordes cautioned that even with such a large investment already in the project, TES could still decide against going forward with the development, which will include housing, sports, entertainment, leisure and office district, in addition to a 192-acre golf course. County Commissioner Ted Kalo said the project is vital to improving the economy of Lorain County. “It’s very important to get this off the ground to move the county forward,” he said. Without sewers, Cordes said, there is almost no way the developer would continue with the project.

Developer, quarry owner partners on luxury resort Saturday, October 15, 2005 Molly Kavanaugh Plain Dealer Reporter South Amherst- The British development company planning a $1.25 billion luxury resort on retired quarries has decided to partner with the owner of the property. The arrangement means American Stone Corp. will be the on-site manager for the project, which is to include houses, a seven-star hotel and a world-class golf course spanning 900 acres. American Stone will continue to quarry sandstone at its 185-acre Birmingham Quarry in Erie County. The company needs to build a new plant for 50 to 100 employees and will soon announce a site in Lorain, Vermilion or elsewhere. http://www.cleveland.com/news/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/news/1129369212179170.xml&coll=2

Companies strike development deal Trans European to invest in American Stone, $1.25 billion development moves ahead Amherst Township - After two months of negotiations Trans European Securities International announced yesterday it will invest in American Stone Corp. as it moves forward with plans for a $1.25 billion mixed-use development. Patrick Gallagher, spokesman for American Stone, said yesterday that instead of Trans European exercising the option to purchase 900 acres of American Stone-owned property, it will invest in the company.

European company to partner with Ohio firm on quarry complex Developer won’t buy 900 acres; will ‘join forces’ with American Stone Shawn Foucher The Chronicle-Telegram AMHERST TWP. — One township trustee calls it a step closer to believability. Trans European Securities, the European outfit planning a 900-acre residential and entertainment complex in Lorain County, said Friday that it will purchase a significant portion of stock in American Stone, the parent company of Cleveland Quarries in Amherst Township. Almost two years ago, TES chose Cleveland Quarries as the site for what at first glance seems like a pie-in-the-sky proposal: A huge complex comprised of housing, entertainment, sports, leisure and office districts, as well as a 192-acre golf course. In May 2004, TES purchased rights to buy the Cleveland Quarries site for $24 million. But Friday, the company announced plans to forego the purchase of the land and instead buy a significant share of American Stone’s stock, as well as “join forces” with the company to develop the property, according to Patrick Gallagher, an American Stone spokesman.
  17. If you were about to build a new home, and realized you had to pay $5,000 impact fee. Wouldn't it make MUCH MORE sense to buy an existing home?? Maybe this is a way to slow down all this crazy growth!

I think your talking about the Quiggly Museum....It's on the corner of South Lake Street and Milan Avenue, in the city of Amherst (the brick intersection, next to the new Jr. High). I've never been there, but heard its pretty cool. http://www.amhersthistorical.org

    1) YES! 2) not sure 3) GOOD QUESTION!! but I dont think they, are THAT DEEP. Maybe 10 feet or so.... deep enought to dive into!! 4) The quarry you saw... is not the one being used for the beach (I think thats #10). That quarry isn't nearly as deep. And all I really know is they want to build a steel/glass canopy over THE ENTIRE THING, DRAIN IT (however that may be), and basically make the thing into a giant WAVE POOL (with palm trees, beaches, etc.) 5) Well there is actaully a quarry on each side of the road there #3, and #4 on my map. And if your willing to be brave.... quarries #5, #6, and #7 are accessible. #7 is behind the old warehouse looking thing. #5, and #6, are down a path, which starts on quarry road (directly across from the warehouse building). Everything else seems too far into the woods to attempt. Heres the map.... a very recent map... Id assume all trails/paths still exist. GOOD LUCK, can't wait to see your pictures!!! and remember, this is an ABANDONDED QUARRY, basically no one will be around. So I wouldn't worry all that much about the "NO TRESPASSING" signs. If you are actually thinking about going down some of these trails, it might be a good idea to park your car somewhere besides Quarry Road.... like in the Downtown South Amherst area or on Hornyak Street... and just walk it. GOOD LUCK!!

Amherst = "Sandstone Center of the World"!!
  24. So what is this the "Cleveland Quarries" east?? Is it even going to compare? Area-wise they are almost identical. Sounds interesting reguardless.
