  1. Lots of police officers, teachers, doctors, nurses, hospital staff, lawyers, firemen, and on and on... Its not called "Pill Hill" for no reason Ive tried to explain this "part" of Lorain before but I guess I didnt do a very good job so let me try again... There is a Lorain School District and an Amherst School district.... not to be confused with the city of Lorain and the city of Amherst..... http://www.loraincounty.com/auditor/logged-in/maps/?id=401242832z|k0lHq4dv4r.0s http://www.loraincounty.com/auditor/logged-in/?id=401242832z|k0lHq4dv4r.0s While the people continue to FLEE FROM the failing Lorain "school district"-(the area northeast of the green line)- which has been in fiscal emergency for 5 or more years and where less than 30 percent of the kids go to college.... people continue FLEE TO the Amherst "school district"- (area inside the green line)-which has been rated excellent by the state of Ohio for four straight years, and where over 90 percent of the kids go to college. People who live in the Amherst Schools primarly work in Cuyahoga county (Cleveland) and tend to be middle to upper income... On the other hand a good number of people who live in the Lorain School District are unemployed or work at minimum wage jobs.. like McDonalds or Burger King, Im not saying all are like that... but a good number do. Id say the average new house built in Amhest Schools costs about 275-300k.....Lorain schools have very very few new housing developments. Of the few new homes sold there Id say the average value is under 100k. Thats just the way it is.... those homes will probably be sold before they can even be built. This area isnt alone however, cities bordering Lorain to the east (Sheffield Twp., Avon, Avon Lake) are in the same position as the Amherst area..... Lorain County is not as dead as you might think. Avon is the fastest growing city in all of Ohio, and guess what.... its just less than 5 miles from Lorain.
  2. NEW PICS >>>I wonder what that quarter circle thing is?? the thing between "D" and "E"---maybe a clock tower?? http://www.mcgillpropertygroup.com/docs/fOH9.pdf#search='deerfield%20%20heritage%20development%20amherst%20lorain' http://www.ryanhomes.com/findhome/community.asp?CID=3014
  3. That shopping center, Westgate Plaza, could never be rennovated into what is being proposed here.. Directly across the street from it is section 8, section 8 and more section 8 housing. Literally the only store that is open is a dollar general. I guess you could say Westgate is on the "wrong side of the tracks". The tracks pretty much run along school district boundaries. And if there actualy was a RR running through town, Lighthouse village would be a noisy place to shop. This new shopping center, Lighthouse Village, is in a completely diffrent neighborhood, one with new 200,000 dollar plus homes being built everyday. So I guess thats why no developer is willing to renovate the center to the north. Money talks I guess, and not enough people care about saving the trees. It would be nice if at least a small section could be set aside for a park, I'm dreaming though. But really this is a very good thing for Lorain, there is no shopping, only abandoned buildings. And it seems every day I hear about more police officers or fire fighters are getting laid off. At least this will give Lorain something.
  4. Looks like this is gona actually happen.... SHOPPING CENTER GETS A BIG BOOST from, Morning Journal (1-11-05) LORAIN -- A shopping center development on 65 acres on Leavitt Road is one step closer now that a judge has decided to lift deed restrictions attached to the land. On Friday, Lorain County Probate Court Judge Frank J. Horvath lifted the restrictions tied to the land currently owned by the Church on the North Coast and ruled that $1,250,000 from the sale be given to Lorain County charities, according to Tom Kuluris, president of Liberty Development Co. ...
  5. Yes it it, you can also click on individual properites and get a photo of the building, the property value, transfer history, ect... Its really convienent, especially when house hunting :-) But I think the site is still not working.. I'm not sure why. Should be working soon.
  6. Is that just a paper map??? If you go to www.loraincountyauditor.com and make an account you can view an interactive map of the LORAIN county... (you can zoom in on individual homes and buildings). Its actually really cool. I believe the website has been down for the last couple weeks.. but its worth checking out

rumor has it that traffic, sewer, and enviornmental studies are finished and will be released at next weeks meeting.... and suposedly the sewers will come through a power line easement from Lorain... Also the restaurant, Applebees, is looking to purchase property on SR 113 near Quarry Road in South Amherst.... the small town of 1,800.

from, Morning Journal (12-14-04) Zoning board to wait for petition from developer SOUTH AMHERST: Villiage opts for petition so it can can charge costs to British-based company South Amherst-- The South Amherst Zoning Board met last night to decide on a new set of zoning regulations for a proposed $1 billion development, but they threw the ball back in the developer's hands instead. South Amherst's zoning board opted to wait for a petition from British-based Trans European Securities LLP sothe villiage could charge any rezoning costs to the company. But even once the petition is filed, the process of voting on the proposed changes won't likely start until late January or early February, said South Amherst Law Director Quentin Nolan. Trans European has plans to buy the 900 acre Cleveland Quarries site, about one-sixth of which is within the villiage, and transform it into a $1 billion golf course and leisure resort with an aquatics center, a hotel, retail shoping and residential high-rises.
  9. The land where you say that airport used to be is now the Campana Industrial Park (i think thats what its called).. basically big ugly buildings The REAL Lorain is pretty much built out.... but the far west side (amherst area) is booming with fancy subdivisions (yes homes of over 1,000,000 dollars are in Lorain... lol) and shopping centers like this one. At least in the new subdivision next door , Martin's Run wiill 50 some acres that will be a metro park.
  10. i dont think there was ever an airport on the site of this proposed shopping center. Its very heavily wooded. maybe your talking about martins run but im not even aware on one being there.. I could be wrong though
  11. from, company website... Lighthouse Village is a 450,000 square foot retail development located in western Lorain county Ohio. The site is located at the intersection of Leavitt Road (SR-58) and Jaeger Road, north of the SR-2 interchange. This development complements Avon/Sheffield and Midway Mall by providing a western Lorain County retail trade area. From the site, it is almost 7 miles to Midway Mall and over 12 miles to Avon Commons. Adjacent to the site is Martin's Run, a multi-million housing development under construction by Oster Homes and the Forest City Land Group. This 529-acre project consists of over 2,000 housing units including single-family homes, cluster homes and townhouses. http://www.martinsrunliving.com from, Morning Journal (4/30/2004) Retail complex is pitched for Lorain Sixty-five acres of land on Leavitt Road (Route 58) where the Church on the North Coast had previously planned to erect a 10,000-seat sanctuary could be the site of a retail development if a judge agrees. LORAIN -- Sixty-five acres of land on Leavitt Road where the Church on the North Coast had previously planned to erect a 10,000-seat sanctuary could be the site of a retail development if a judge agrees. Liberty Development Co. and Goodman Real Estate Services Group are working together to develop Lighthouse Village, but first they need deed restrictions on the land lifted by Lorain County Probate Court. ...
  12. I found a few things..... http://www.cawrse.com/pages/landplanning/deerfield.html No link for article.
  13. whats the actual website nsc??
  14. Does anyone know of a website for Heritage Development Company of Moreland Hills, Ohio. They are currently building a large mixed use development down the street from me, I believe it will be called Deerfield Commons. Its supposed to have 300 some homes, condos, and a town center type shopping center. Its on Oak Point Road on the Amherst/Lorain border just north of I-90. I cant seem to find a website or anything, if anyone has any info I would appreciate it greatly. THANKS!!

yea, I did the same and got the same results. I wonder if you were able to translate it into swiss and search.. the results would be diffrent?? No one can answer my question as to why would this company be proposing this if they truely have no intentions of going through with it?? ?? ? ?? ?? ? Surely if nothing else they think it can be done. I also emailed the Amehrst township trustees, maybe something was mentiond at one of the meetings thats didnt make the papers. I'll post the Chronicles Telegrams' article on this tomorrow morning.. and hopefully the Plain Dealer will have something too.

    A) Trans European Securities is a company best described as a subsidary of Swiss European Management SA, located in Lugano, Switzerland (created just for this project). I havent really researched much about that yet, but if anyone knows of any specific projects developed by them I would love to know. Its my guess that the company has had plans to build some sort of massive resort somewhere and have probably been doing so for a long time.. they say they just found this location in May I believe. So now they are just now starting the process of moving it forward. B) lol... I believe there were two guys. The one guy does most of the talking I guess. How many people do you believe a company needs to propose a major project like this.. it seems like the two of them have been able to get the job done... Maybe once the project moves forward youll see more people. He obviously has a large company working behind him... or there wouldnt be artist renderings, project maps, and multi-media presentations. They were not suprised by american zoning law complexities, they were suprized at the amount of zoning changes that need to be made at a local level.... If this were in Cleveland, no zoning laws would have to be changed just to accomodate it. These 3 local governments will have to rewrite the books!!! that is suprising to anyone. Why would this company... (1) buy the rights to this land, for 250,000 dollars. and (2) why would they create so much hype about this if they truely believed that nothing would come of it...seems pointless and like a waste of time and money to me... PS: MrNYC, you didnt answer my question from before. How do you know so much about Amherst, did you use to live here before moving to NYC??

''One thing that became very apparent is that there's some doubt as to whether this is going to get off the ground,'' Pike told the crowd of about 120 government officials and residents from Amherst Township, Brownhelm Township and the village of South Amherst. ''If you knew the amount of work that's gone into this project and the money involved in getting to today, it has been substantial.'' I dont read anything about the company having done any legal work. It just says substantial work and money have gone into planning project. Im sure they have been planning on doing a resort like this somewhere for a very long time (not being sure of the exact site) and have invested alot of money in planning it searching the globe for a site and buying the purchase option on the land. In my opinion thats all that is mean by the statement. Also, i beilieve the reason he was suprised by the amount of zoning changes is because there are so many local regulations that will need to be changed in order to accomodate the project... the townships basicallly need to rewrite there zoning books. In South Amherst for example, there is a 30 foot limit on all buildings.

from, Morning Journal (12-1-04) Developer says quarry resort could begin in 2006 A partner in a British-based consortium proposing to build a $1 billion leisure resort and golf course at the Cleveland Quarries says construction could begin as soon as 2006. NEW RUSSIA TOWNSHIP -- A partner in a British-based consortium proposing to build a $1 billion leisure resort and golf course at the Cleveland Quarries says construction could begin as soon as 2006. Neil Pike, of Trans European Securities LLP, spoke at a packed public meeting at New Russia Township Hall last night and tried to ease doubts among some of those in attendance about the project's viability. ''One thing that became very apparent is that there's some doubt as to whether this is going to get off the ground,'' Pike told the crowd of about 120 government officials and residents from Amherst Township, Brownhelm Township and the village of South Amherst. ''If you knew the amount of work that's gone into this project and the money involved in getting to today, it has been substantial.''

Thanks for the website!! It does seem alot like what is proposed here in Amherst. I saw that there are several hotels in Woodlands, allthough i think that the the Cleveland Quarries will be more resort orriented than the woodlands. I also think there will be more recreation activities at the quarries. But all that is just if everything pans out, it very well could not. But overall they do seem quite similar. To try and answer your second question... I remember one of the older maps presented (before the name change) by the developers, up in the top corner it said: Beaver Lodges: Cleveland, Ohio. To me that seems like they will be marketing this with Cleveland in mind, the city is only 30 miles away. Also.. these 5000 new residences will likely bring in NEW residents to the Cleveland area (remember, it will be marketed to world wide residential property owners) ..it will not simply pull residents from the Cleveland and inner suburbs. In saying that, I believe that the downtown as a whole (especially cultural attractions such as museums) could benefit greatly from such a project.

[glow=red,2,300]FYI... [/glow] Tuesday November 30, 2004, 7:00 PM: CLEVELAND QUARRY PROJECT meeting, at New Russia Township Hall (268 Butternut Ridge Road). Developers from Trans European Securities will be there to answer any questions. this is a change in location from South Amherst Middle School due to a scheduling conflict. From I-90: Take I-90 to the Route 58 Amherst/Lorain Exit. Turn LEFT at the light. Continue SOUTH on SR 58 for for about 8 miles (once you get south of the Amherst area it gets quite rural but dont worry its the right way). Turn RIGHT onto Butternut Ridge Road and the Township hall is right there. (I believe its on the right side of the road, but theres nothing else around so you cant miss it). IF YOU STAY ON 58 too long youll end up in Downtown Oberlin, if you do end up there you know you went too far. From Ohio Turnpike/ I-480: Take the Ohio Turnpike to the new Route 58 Amherst/Oberlin Interchange (one exit west of Route 57 in Elyria and one exit east of Baumhart Road in Vermillion). At the light take a right. Continue south on SR 58 for about 6 miles (once you get south of the Amherst area it gets quite rural but dont worry its the right way).

LOL...I'll have to take you up on that one!! btw...Angelos is my favorite pizza place!! Lets hope these guys are for real!! Lorain county has been hurting for a long time and this might be what it needs to get back on its feet. Also, Id hope its more than hundreds of jobs. PS... MrNYC how are you so familiar with Amherst, did you grow up here or what??
  22. Steele05 replied to a post in a topic in Abandoned Projects
LOL.. ok first of all I KNOW, I KNOW, I KNOW...lol (i wanted to make that clear, hope it worked) I thnk it is a long shot as well... but lets just say it did happen, im curious as to what all of you think. Considering this single project could could be the start of MANY great things for Lorain County, many people around here are excited about the impact this will have on the local economy in terms of jobs mostly, and I just wanted to put the question out there....How many jobs do you guys think this could mean??? MrNYC i dont drink but thanks anyways...lol
  23. Steele05 replied to a post in a topic in Abandoned Projects
For a moment lets just say that everything proposed by these developers goes through (including police, firefighters, and hospitial staff). How many jobs do you guys think could be created??? I think it could be over 10,000? but i'd like everyones opinion. THANKS!!
  24. Steele05 replied to a post in a topic in Abandoned Projects
thats a very immature comment... i was asking serious questions but if your gonna act like that i dont really care.. why should i, it will most likely never happen. If done properly and in a less visible place i wouldnt mind it, nor would most LORAIN COUNTY residents..lol
  25. Steele05 replied to a post in a topic in Abandoned Projects
not a whole lot of new info but i thought id post it anyways http://www.morningjournal.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=13447163&BRD=1699&PAG=461&dept_id=46371&rfi=6 I never said you could go from plane to quarry in 15 minutes(maybe 20 but thats not the point)... the drive alone would take that long. How long would a passenger have to wait before even getting on the train...(getting tickets, waiting in line, then waiting for an available train to take them where they want to go, and then the actual process of getting there)??? How fast are these trains?? I dont know, but if i had to guess id say it would take longer than 15 minutes + time to get a rental car. If you built a 25 foot mound of dirt DIRECTLY next the the turpike ramp... it would 100% eliminate all surrounding lands' visibility from the highway (land which has been hopped would contain hotels and restraunts)...what kind of hotel or restraunt would like being hidden?? though the under pass might work!! If either an under/over pass are built there would have to be an ADDITIONAL under/over pass constructed down on SR113 a few miles away...lol. I just dont like the thought of some many "high speed" rail lines comming through my town.. Could the HSR station be built on vacant land on SR 58 just north of where 58 crosses the existing norfolk/southern RR in the industrial park?? This would eliminate the need of building any more under over passes and rail roads. I agree with you that it would probably increase land values (where ever 25 foot mounds didnt stand)... but I also believe you would lose the sense of community if you put too much mass transportation in such a small area. Over all i believe its unnessecary and wouldnt provide that much in return, unless it can be built along exiting RR in the area. We all ready have 6-8 highway interchanges in the vicinity and have great access to anywhere, we dont NEED a rail station. Its never even been mentioned anywhere but on this forum... i dont think it will happen. But we are starting to get off topic...... So how about this resort.. has anyone heard of the developers or does anyone know of any indoor beaches?? :)
