  1. Does anyone have a ballpark on monthly parking pass cost in the Cleveland Botanical Gardens area?

OK, Gilbert's reaction is a little crazy, but I absolutely love it. I will buy several Cavs tickets next year. I will redouble my efforts to spread some of my cash around downtown.

Yes. He plays once a month at the Beachland. I believe it's the last Friday of every month. He's playing next Friday: Fri, Jun 25| 9 PM (8 PM door) The Schwartz Brothers $6.00 Ballroom | All Ages www.beachlandballroom.com If anyone ever wants to do a UO gathering at a Schwartz show, I'm game.

It would be irresponsible for me not to drop by.
  10. There is not a block in Cleveland I'm nervous in during the daytime. Even as a dude who spends almost all his time in the city, I'd be a bit nervous standing at that intersection at night, but I wouldn't worry walking by it.
  11. I agree. I also don't think the Tremont-University Heights commute is that much better. I agree with the other suggestions of Shaker Sq or Cedar-Fairmont. Especially Shaker Sq.
  12. Well, that's fair: I wouldn't recommend standing at 25th and Detroit.
  13. It's actually $5-$7 depending on if you dip through the Flats or go around Carnegie. (If intoxicated, it's well worth going around Carnegie). And the 81 is totally fine. I would send my mother on it at 1 a.m.

I'm not an expert on the neighborhood, but in general, North of Lorain and South of Bridge between 25th and 40th and so is all very good, as I understand it. It gets spottier west of 40th with some bad blocks. And the eastern part of the neighborhood near Detroit is a bit dodgy. Feel free to correct me if my perception and memory of NEOCANDO crime data is off.

Yes, City Wheels is still alive and well. From your description, I think Tremont is an excellent candidate and would be my first choice for you. There are more grad students and recent grads here than college students. It's definitely a younger neighborhood with plenty of great bars, destination restaurants and THREE great coffeehouses. There's a grocery store nearby (bikeable or busable) in Ohio City as well as the West Side Market nearby. And if pressed, you could go to the Walmart or Target for groceries, which is on the edge of the neighborhood connected by a bike path. If you like cycling, you're also within easy distance of the Towpath trail and plenty of great urban routes. There's a library in the neighborhood as well as an independent bookstore. Lincoln Park is at the heart of the neighborhood and includes a farmer's market on Tuesdays during the summer. There's even a public pool, there. The 81 is a convenient bus that runs late hours. You're also a short bike ride to downtown. (If you love hills, it's very close cutting through the flats -- 1.5 miles to Playhouse Square or 2ish miles to CSU. If you're more of a wimp like me, you can add a mile and take the Lorain Carnegie Bridge. There's also an art walk once a month and plenty of galleries open every weekend. I have had two female roommates and both felt very safe walking around at night. I've lived in the neighborhood for more than 3 years without even the hint of an issue, but I am a guy with a dog. Ohio City is also a good candidate, but you'd have to be more careful in where in OC you live. It's all fine, but it is more prone to safety issues than Tremont, especially in certain areas. Clifton in Lakewood isn't bad, but definitely more suburban than Tremont or OC. Cleveland Heights is fine, too, but public transit isn't as good and the big hills make cycling to and from campus a bit more fun or more of a chore, depending on your attitude toward hills. University Circle is great but expensive. And Detroit Shoreway, in my opinion, is an emerging neighborhood that still has a ways to go. I would consider adding Shaker Square to your list of potentials as well. I used to live in Vermont, and while Shaker Square doesn't reflect New England, it feels more like Burlington than any place else in Cleveland.
  17. Jeff (and team) put on an awesome show at Pedal For Prizes. Despite a little rain, a good time was had by all. And thanks to the event, I now I have a new deli, a new barber and a new diner to try out. (Among other things.) Plus, how have I never indulged in a Jack Frost donut before?
  18. I'll be there. I'm trying to coax a few friends to come, too.
  19. I agree. Little Italy itself is perfect. UC is a bit expensive, but if that is not a concern, high quality of life there and it meets all the stated desires. I am an urban snob and prefer not to live in the burbs, but up the hill in the Heights also meets those requirements in a very urban (just not Cleveland) environment. I could recommend other good neighborhoods, but like peabody said, why look any farther away?
  20. What were they resisting? They wanted it made into residential? Or they just preferred the vacant storefront look? Maybe they just don't like Turkish food... The concerns were about parking and traffic, as usual. Bingo. Sounds like you've gone to a few public meetings in your day.
  21. Also, of note, that house which looks like it's falling apart was taken down to the studs and is nearly completely rehabbed at this point. And it still looks like it fits in the neighborhood, not like a new house tossed into the mix. At least I think it's that one. It could be another on that block. In any case, it's very nice to see. A friend of mine did the same to a house on Fruit, though this one looks even better.
  22. You're correct Straphanger. This is not the Hotz everyone knows and loves. This has been an empty and somewhat dilapidated building since I moved into the neighborhood 3+ years ago. I met the family starting the venture (and tried their yummy food at a block club meeting). They had some strong neighbor resistence, but prevailed. It is near the corner of Professor and Starkweather, within eyeshot of Lucky's and Lily's and several other businesses which have popped up at that intersection. My understanding is this will be far more affordable than your standard Tremont restaurant. I also understand they're hoping to open sometime in June, but I haven't spoken to anyone recently about it. I have seen the work going on. They're working incredible hours. I've sometimes seen them working when I take my dog out in the morning and still at it when I'm taking my dog for a walk after work.
  23. Looking forward to the new Turkish restaurant that is slated to open soon in the old Hotz Valley View location on Professor. They are working late hours behind boarded windows to get the place done.

This thread is four years old. People still feeling good about then-predictions? I would say the Detroit Shoreway folks or UC folks are probably the front runners right now.
  25. Can anyone give me a state of the blocks near Biddulph and Fulton? I have been considering venturing out of Tremont and renting in Old Brooklyn with intentions of buying if I like the hood after my dry run. The place I'm considering renting is near that intersection. Thanks! andy
