Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Gardens
The grottoes you're talking about is called Cat Canyon now, and will still house large cats, with a new indoor exhibit built for the small cats. From the release: "Cat Canyon will feature a dramatic outdoor exhibit of large predators such as Malayan tigers, snow leopards and Amur leopards living in expanded, naturalistic habitats. A new indoor facility will show small cat species in larger exhibits featuring more complex, multi-dimensional natural environments." I totally share all of those memories too! You're right on with your updates about where old buildings were in relationship to new ones (except I'm not sure about the Panda exhibit). The Ape House now houses a 3-D theater with revolving shows (Polar Express this winter I think). The Walrus exhibit now houses harbor seals I think, after they got 3 baby walruses from the wild and all died (something about rubbing the caulking off the glass?) :( but there was a sea lion that swam around monkey island, his name was Toby, oh and the big male walrus they had before the babies was named Brutus. What I need to figure out is what is in the old education center, it's called Tree Tops, but that means nothing. My family has had a membership since I was a kid, and we still have one now, if anyone is interested in a visit.

Your top 10 Cincinnati area neighborhoods
i mean i can't say that i'm an expert on the matter, but i haven't heard of a lot of investment besides the new big box office complex, unlike many other neighborhoods in the city. maybe someone else knows better than i do.

Your top 10 Cincinnati area neighborhoods
I mean that a lot of the great buildings in C-T are falling into disrepair and not being restored. Sad...

Your top 10 Cincinnati area neighborhoods
Brian's list of underrated neighborhoods, because I can't follow directions: 1. Prospect Hill - Not on many people's radar, but great location, history, architecture, style 2. O'Bryonville - Nice, quaint business district 3. Pendleton - Like a condensed OTR 4. DeSales Corner - I LOOOOOVE the potential of DeSales Corner. With completely different architectural styles working together on one corner. Not there yet. 5. Columbia Tusculum - Oh little river town, how I love thee. Unique architecture for the area, unfortunatly headed the wrong direction. 6. Lytle Park - In the CBD, but a completely unique corner of town that maintains the character of the CBD 100 years ago. Needs some more restaurants/streetlife. 7. Camp Washington - Despite being chopped up and somewhat abandoned, walking around still gives that strong neighborhood feel. 8. Corryville - Because everyone needs the seedy part of town. Ours just happens to have streetscaping and a concert hall frequented by high schoolers. 9. The Brewery District - OTR is several neighborhoods, can you imagine how wonderful this will be if it's realized? 10. Queensgate - Ok, there's not a lot happening there now, but my favorite named neighborhood, and there's talk of making a mixed-use area and not just empty manufacturing Overall, I am continually blown away by the quality of the built environment in Cincinnati. After studying in St. Louis, I realized most neglected neighborhoods don't stay standing like they do here. Somebody knew what they were doing, and we're lucky for it.

Forest Park: Forest Fair Mall / Cincinnati Mills Redevelopment
you are correct sir! Music Store Leaving Cincinnati Mills http://www.wcpo.com/news/local/story.aspx?content_id=13890bea-2ada-45af-ab63-96de71c3b722 Last Update: 11/10 2:30 pm Another store is pulling out of the Cincinnati Mills mall. The Guitar Center is closing its location at the mall and re-opening later this week at the Kemper Crossing shopping center in the Tri-County area. Earlier this year, the mall lost one of its biggest tenants when the bigg's grocery store there closed. Mall management was not immediately avaiable for comment but, earlier this year, claimed many stores there were reporting strong sales.

Favorite Cincinnati Skyline spot?
3. sycamore 2. celestial parking lot 1. 75N in KY it's great that the city looks so good from so many angles. i was driving down highland yesterday and it's a really cool vibe right before it turns the corner and hits liberty. it's a pretty well kept historic street with p&g straight ahead. i like juxtaposition.

Ohio: Casino / Gaming Discussion
I think we need to continue to invest in technology and innovation. Make money off of new ideas until they become standardized and can be done cheaper else where. There is a manufacturing component to that but it isn't the historic manufacturing base. Do I think this is an ideal system? No. But how do you make money manufacturing paying $30/hour when it can be done in other countries for $2? And I completely agree that gambling is hardly economic development.

Ohio: Casino / Gaming Discussion
^ I don't know if trying to reestablish manufacturing is the way to go. The manufacturing base all over the country is in severe decline, it's just cheaper to produce things in other countries. I completely agree with the point though, real economic development needs to happen in these areas.

Ohio payday lending regulation
Last i checked that was the role of government. To fill the gap when the markets fail, you know, those social discussions. This was never a purely economic discussion. It's easy to turn a blind eye to the reality of pay day lending because theoretically it's not a bad concept. I don't know what the proper APR level should have been but it was clear that the old system was flawed due to the people that were being targeted and disproportionately using the service.

Ohio: Casino / Gaming Discussion
I agree with DanB. And honestly, if we're going to try and create jobs in Wilmington, is a casino the way to go? I'm not opposed to casinos or gambling, but quality jobs they are not. Haha I just thought of this.... It's like Walking Tall! I don't know about the original, but the one with The Rock and Johnny Knoxville. Hmmm, maybe I'm in favor of the Wilmington casino as long as it comes with a sheriff who beats the crap out of people with a huge stick.

The Great "**YOUR** Voting Experience" Thread
i voted up in fairfield using a machine. it went smooth, no lines. it printed a paper receipt under a plastic window that i got to view and ok which was kinda fun. i don't really understand why issues about specific programs and funding are constitutional amendments. can anyone explain?

The YouTube Thread
I love Old North! I worked for the Old North St. Louis Restoration Group when I was at school there. It has the foundations of a great community (built environment, sense of place, history, Crown Candy). Mullanphy is shored up now and they're trying to turn it into a hostel and the 14th street mall is being renovated and the street will be opened back up to traffic. There is all talk of streetcars or light rail going through in the future. Buy in now! But those aerials are telling, St. Louis has blocks of empty lots near downtown where buildings just collapsed and were never replaced. That's what happens when you get so big and then so small, it makes for a weird landscape. Some of the geography of the report was off, neighborhood boundaries and things, but still exciting to see.

Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Gardens
The cat house has to be one of my least favorite exhibits, and certainly hasn't aged well. (HAHA I just noticed this from the cincy zoo website "Cat House - See (and smell) leopards, ocelots, Pallas’ cats, and more.") A new small cat exhibit is being built at Cat Canyon (http://cincinnatizoo.org/pdfs/CatCanyonSCARCE.pdf). I haven't heard how this will effect the current cat house, but with the zoo so strapped for space I'd imagine it might be leaving soon. While looking for that article I also noticed that the Fraternal Order of Eagles is sponsoring a new eagle exhibit: http://cincinnatizoo.org/pdfs/FOEPartnership.pdf And here is a rendering: http://www.local12.com/guides/petcare/story.aspx?content_id=c9f3e3f5-228f-4478-91df-400bdb2e8795 I don't get how this is better than the cages by the reptile house where they used to be, but I guess they weren't there last time I visited anyway.
