  1. Such a beautiful building, but absolutely the worst apartment I have ever lived in my life (and I lived in a tiny mold infested apartment in a basement at one point in time). I hope that as development moves up Vine, this building is given the love it actually deserves.
  2. I actually remember that place (I graduated from UC in 2009). I wanted to say that a cafe/bar-laundromat would be a great addition to Short Vine as well like Sudsy's was, but when I think about it, I actually think that a place like that would lose out being there. As a UC student living in the dorms, I had little reason to visit there to ever wash clothes. Machines in the dorms were able to be paid for with my Bearcat Card (not sure if Sudsy's had introduced this - I know a few places off campus would allow you to pay for things with your card) and if I had a huge amount of clothing that needed washed, I'd just pile everything into my car and drive the 30 minutes home and have my parents wash them. I would imagine that putting something like this (either a place similar to Sudsy Malones or to a cafe/bar-laundromat) in OTR would do better since there is more of a mix of places that may/may not have machines in them. The place my partner and I just got in OTR doesn't have a washer/dryer in the unit so we'll have to either use the common ones or go to a place like this. It would be great if what would potentially be at Mercer wasn't just a laundromat and would be a cafe/bar as well so that we'd be able to leave the house and also get a coffee and some work done as this isn't too far of a walk from the place we got.
  3. A bit off topic but this is a Belgian place called Wasbar! I was just in Ghent the other weekend and passed this. It was completely full. Very cool place and think it would also be a perfect fit in OTR (based on the look/feel of the place) but would imagine it would have a hard time staying in business if a lot of apartments in the area have machines in them already. Here's their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/WASBAR.BE
  4. Ahem..... http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,20921.0.html Ah sorry! It was late here only browsed to see if I could find mention of it and skipped the first page completely since it was dated so long ago. But I now notice another article that I missed mentioning the route to Columbus on page 2. I guess posting the reddit thread may have been more interesting because hearing Chicago redditors complain about visiting Ohio was fun.
  5. I've not really been keeping up with what's going on with this, but this article popped up on my reddit feed today. Plans for train connecting Columbus and Chicago chug forward http://thelantern.com/2014/10/plans-for-train-connecting-columbus-and-chicago-chug-forward/
  6. Sorry my street geography is off a bit with this - but I don't see Union Terminal playing a big role then if this light rail alignment is being built into the system. What is the general consensus on this? Will Union Terminal play a role in connecting suburban transit (light rail) to the downtown area and then the streetcar/buses shuttling passengers further?
  7. thanks Eight and State. i found some of those online and browsed through them but couldn't see anything past 2000, though that could be because the website had been redone and i just couldn't find it. i agree that a plan without funding is just a dream but also think that building without an overall goal only gives those who aren't seeing progress right out their front door a reason to shoot the project down. we live in an age of selfishness to where people don't necessarily think for their community but rather for how they can benefit personally (which i think also is an extension to what atlas is saying). and i think that is true to so many aspects, including the streetcar. it just seems like it would be a benefit to say "here are phase I and II of the project, which we currently have funding for (just saying). future extensions (which would be assessed at a later date x many years down the line) would include routes to these different areas."
  8. i have been following the streetcar off and on since 2009 when we produced a documentary for it in my videography class at UC. that being said, in more recent years, i would say that i have been following it less until the immediate past few months. i know that the route has changed since the original one, but one thing i've been asking myself when i hear/read these people complaining that it will "only benefit CBD and OTR" is whether there is a master plan for the entire region. i saw a map on here a few pages back but from what i took, it was just one user's fantasy map (i'm sorry - i forget who posted it!). perhaps showing that there IS a plan in place to extend the streetcar past OTR and uptown even - to the entire basin would be something that would get more people on board. my initial reaction when i hear those people say that is to freak out and wonder why they can't see that it would be the FIRST phase of something much larger. but if there is no plan in place, perhaps people find it hard to believe that anything would come of other phases if there hasn't been planning already there. obviously it would just be initial... but is there not a master plan involving transportation? the latest master plan i can find is from 2000 or alternatively, it is mentioned in the 2030 OKI regional transportation plan but still with only phase I and phase II.
  9. For fun?! I guess a bit like sadomasochistic fun! Reminds me so much of Danish cities that ripped their streetcars up and are now trying to build them again. I guess there is comfort in knowing that Cincinnati is not alone...
  10. I've been living in Europe for about the past 5 years and will be finishing my MA here next summer. It was very bittersweet when I left because as much as I loved Cincinnati, I didn't feel like it was a place that I could stand to live. Now, almost 5 years later and after having lived in Germany and Denmark (and soon to be Norway), I was getting pretty pumped with the idea of going back to Cincinnati - the city really had so many things going for it and although it was no Berlin with public transportation, there was a momentum that really made you want to be part of the city. Needless to say, I am extremely let down with the election turnout and will probably consider my options with whether I should move back or not. Yes, rail is that important to me.
  11. nice. alternatively it could be buried. in a world where money wasn't an issue. the flow of the city would change completely. imagine coming out of union terminal and seeing the city. very cool.

  13. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&q=Petueltunnel,+80807+M%C3%BCnchen,+Bayern,+Germany&sll=48.177369,11.584176&sspn=0.002561,0.004823&gl=us&ie=UTF8&cd=2&geocode=FeUh3wIdusGwAA&split=0&hq=&hnear=Petueltunnel,+80807+M%C3%BCnchen,+Bayern,+Germany&ll=48.177634,11.583935&spn=0.002561,0.004823&t=k&z=18 here is another example of a capped highway here in germany i used to live by. if you scroll to the left, what looks like streets there are actually bike paths. the park as well has a canal that runs through it. the street there was actually pretty busy and loud as it is the on/off to a rather busy highway...but while in the park you can't hear it at all. a cap would as well probably make a world of a difference for those apartments at the banks.
  14. ew. sorry we aren't all elite city folk like you. we'll make sure to wipe our boots before we go in!
  15. there is a capped highway next to my apartment here in munich. on top is a park, though it's a more "modern" park with bike paths and walkways scattered throughout (not as many trees and shrubs and stuff as other parks here). there are tons of parks i could go to around here but for some reason i really like this one. perhaps because i know what's underneath and know what COULD be there instead...but there are also a few restaurants and such throughout and, the best part, i don't hear the highway at ALL. totally agree with this. it would be nice to see some development there but i also like the idea of green space between the two end caps. who knows - perhaps they could do open air markets or something every so often. my aunt usually participates in art things in hyde park...it would be cool to see this downtown and a place like that would be a good place (along with fountain square of course).
