Cleveland: Flats East Bank
I don't doubt that it's nice. I've heard its neighbor, Eaton Centre, is absolutely stunning. But their zip codes take the air out of most their appeal to me. I'd gladly take either building in FEB, but both corps seem to have taken an affirmative action the past few years to say "No thanks!"

^ Except that DDR just built (within the last five years) a craprastic suburban campus in Beachwood.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
E Rocc, how many times did patrons at Ferris Steakhouse just down the road get called "faggots" because they were white? As you have mentioned, Cocktails and it's patrons are rightfully proud of who they are, and they were targeted because of that. It's as simple as that -- and Occam's razor. And a hate crime to the bone.

Cleveland: Cudell / West Boulevard / Edgewater: Development and News
Nothing wrong with lower income housing in principle, but it struck me that in a place like Washington DC, considering the proximity to public transport, those would be $300k+ units. At any rate, any investment is good investment in that party of the city.

Wow. Great pics and what a project. Any idea who's doing the reno work/how the units will be marketed?

Cleveland: Jack Cleveland Casino
"About $350 million was invested into Phase I of the casino and it’s expected to bring in 5 million visitors annually. Work on Phase II will start soon along Huron Street across from Quicken Loans Arena and will be operated by one of Caesars Entertainment's other brands." Whoa! From the Newsnet5 article posted above. As far as I know, this is the first time I've seen mention of the possibility of Phase 2 not being Horseshoe branded. Anyone heard of this before!? – and apologies if it has been mentioned. Seems unlikely based on the legislation, but what do I know. Cleveland: Downtown: Tower City / Riverview Development
I agree with this. I love the nights, they're a nice touch for the city, would love more of them... but they could definitely use some more. I think we are averaging about one night for every day. Which is pretty much on par with every city in the world. So we are pretty much maxed out on nights. First post on UO that's ever had me flat-out laughing out loud. Good work.

Cleveland: Downtown & Vicinity Residences Discussion
^ Correct. I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say that most of us on here would be consumed with glee if, for example, they announced a residential tower for the garage on Euclid. I don't know, however, that I buy the argument that Clevelanders don't want to live in high rises. Orlando is sprawl and low-rise condo-tastic, but still has some impressive towers downtown. And while I get the economics involved in such, I almost feel like there is some x-factor (likely, image or perception of our city) also keeping these projects from being proposed. A corollary to the absence of certain retailers from our market, as discussed in another thread.

Cleveland: Downtown & Vicinity Residences Discussion
^Frankly, that's a good point. As much as it pains me to say, places like Orlando, Charlotte, even Jacksonville have the type of new construction high-rise condos/apartments that we still dream about for downtown Cleveland.

Cleveland: Random Development and News
I too love Potbelly's, and that should be an awesome buildout given the space, but this cannot be good news for locally owned (and one of my faves) Presto, just down the block at the Arcade. Hopefully there's enough sandwich lovers in the 600 block of Euclid to support both (and Jimmy Johns)!

Cleveland: Random Development and News
You mean more than just the total which includes County Jail inmates?? :-P Yeah I knew I did the math before and came up with a more true downtown population stat. I got 6,817. 668 was not included in the census, so you can add another 400 to that getting you at 7,217. But that number still includes section 8, and public housing, which aren't the usual numbers people want to brag about, and not the population critical in gaining retail downtown. This is my original post describing where the number came from and why we often hear 10,000 and 12,000. http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,26665.msg592170.html#msg592170 While I agree that including the county jail population is a bit misleading, what is with the tendency to not consider Section 8 renters as "real" downtown residents?! These individuals have chosen to use their vouchers to live downtown, they contribute to the downtown economy, pay their taxes, and often care very much for their community. I've been in the buildings and spoken to the residents. At the very least, a building that's primarily Section 8 is one less that's market rate, which only creates more demand for new apartment/condo construction or conversion in this market, which is a good problem to have. But please, perpetuating an image that the only downtown residents worth counting are yuppies or hipsters living in lofts is unfortunate.

The Official *I Love Cleveland* Thread
Ugh, it is now Cherry Blossom Festival/Spring School Trip time in DC, which means I see at least a half dozen LFL or Cleveland Southeastern buses everyday during my morning or evening commute. To be completely serious, besides commuter coaches, I see more LFL & Cleveland Southeastern buses combined in downtown DC than ANY other. They must bring groups in from all across the east coast and not just NE Ohio.

Cleveland-Intl Space Station Lab
With the blow that the ending of the Shuttle program has caused to the space industry in Cental Florida (and heat NASA has taken for it) I'm not surprised they were thrown any bone they could. Disappointing yes, but at 30 jobs this wasn't exactly going to turn Midtown into the next Houston. Let's be glad we have Glenn -- and its thousands of jobs -- and do everything we can to protect and expand that asset.

Cleveland: 2012 Democratic National Convention?
Don't quote me on this, and I've never been to a national political convention, but I think that while the primary events would take place in an arena, the convention center plays an important support role. What's perplexing to me is how this compares to Cleveland's attempt to land the 2008 Republican National Convention. Didn't that seem like a much more concerted effort? With a balloon drop and everything in the Q when the selections committee visited? If it wasn't for UO, I wouldn't have even known Cleveland was in the running this time. But maybe I'm living under a rock...

Cleveland on NPR yesterday
This was already posted in the Healthline thread, but NPR's "Marketplace" program also featured the Healthline in a segment on Bus Rapid Transit systems on Monday. Very positive stuff! With these segments, and the George Gund Foundation underwriting announcements that always make me smile, Greater Cleveland's been getting some great attention from NPR lately. http://marketplace.publicradio.org/display/web/2010/11/09/pm-rapid-bus-transit-a-cheaper-alternative-to-rail

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
Bar Symon would have done gangbusters at Crocker Park...probably even Avon Commons, just down 83 a bit. But that location in Avon Lake was just puzzling. The strip mall was truly depressing, and now has claimed two restaurants that didn't deserve to go (Swingos Grand Tavern being the first). Here's hoping he tries again elsewhere (as indicated in the article) because the restaurant itself filled a great niche.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
If you click on the links in the PD article to NOLA.com and the Richmond paper, they indicate that NG has made it clear that they intend on getting out of the shipbuilding business. So, CS's offer is apparently seizing on that.

Cleveland: Cleveland State University: Development and News
I'm not saying the Student Center is all of a sudden Pritzker-worthy. Just that, upon seeing it in person, it wasn't as much as a disaster IMO. Still a bit of a clunker, but it certainly has "presence". Maybe the final details and some landscaping will help!
-
Cleveland: Cleveland State University: Development and News
Just an observation: I've drove down Euclid past the education building and new student center today. From the pictures posted above and the renderings I shared the general sentiment that the student center is a bit of a clunker, whereas the education building is a comparative revelation. BUT, in my brief drive by, I actually liked the student center a lot more. And the education building was nice, but not a centerpiece. And all those really interesting details pointed out in Mayor's pics were nay impossible to make out at 20 MPH. Point is, seeing the buildings in their context in reality was a lot different than seeing a carefully cropped or composed picture on a computer screen. And in the same vein, these buildings will appear differently to the pedestrian ambling down Euclid than me driving past in my car, for better or worse. So if you're in Cleveland and haven't seen these buildings in person yet, I suggest you check them out first hand and just maybe, as far as the student center goes, you'll be pleasantly surprised as I was.

Young professional relocating to Cleveland
Agrees. Tremont Place Lofts is right up your "rustic but granite countertops" alley. Lots and lots of character, and you should be able to get a lot for that price point. And Tremont continues to be one of Cleveland's best neighborhoods.
