Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
^ It's interesting they don't mention the "other" establishments on that block. West 29th is probably the only place in Cleveland (and Ohio for that matter) for your one stop shopping for everything from sweet potato pie to...leather.

Is it technically CMHA? It's Section 8. I'm a little undereducated in the Section 8 process, so sorry if that's a dumb question. Allerton is NOT CMHA. Section 8, HUD, but not CMHA.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
No. They initially were adding jobs here, but the recent announcement of 500 are existing jobs here that were being subcontracted. They are just bringing them "in house". I think a simple and accurate description would be that, while DFAS has indeed added hundreds of jobs to DFAS Cleveland from other centers across the county over the past couple of years, the jobs announcement from this week regarded the bringing "in-house" of previously contractor-based positions, resulting in neither a net gain nor loss in employment.

I think the Towpath Trail is something quite similar in spirit, and even larger in scope. You'll get your "bisecting urban ruggedness" feel from it once it finishes the last 4 miles to Whiskey Island, which is getting ever closer.

And do not forget the similarly named, but slightly more sarcastic, Cleveland Clothing Co. I think they fall somewhere in between the CLE Clothing Co and Big Cock in the level of boldness/creativeness....http://www.clevelandclothingco.net/

Latest PD article stated that things are...slowly...moving optimistically forward. Securing the necessary financing is of course the major impediment at this time.

Cleveland: Downtown: East 4th Street Developments
Out of curiosity, where did you find this out? I just checked on the upcoming Landmarks Commission agenda and didn't see it. It's not necessarily on the Landmarks Commission agenda yet, and I'm not even 100% sure it would even have to be presented before them. City Planning is who would need to grant approval. At any rate, as I said, the property owners have applied to B&H for the demolition permit. If you are concerned with this, I suggest you get in contact.

Cleveland: Downtown: East 4th Street Developments
The building is technically condemned. It was condemned by Building and Housing a number of years ago. The then owners brought it back into code and explored redevelopment options for it. And it has been condemned again (October '09, I believe), now under the ownership of a new party. Hope is not lost. As is mentioned above, B&H is clear that their condemnation is not an indication that they want it demolished, but rather that there are some significant deficiencies in the current structure that they would like to see rectified. I think that the more letters that are submitted to B&H and, especially, the Planning Commission, the less likely that they would allow a demo of the property.

Is that the Goldfish store? No, it's the black granite building on the southeast side of the block, next to the surface lot on the corner of Prospect & East 4th (http://tinyurl.com/ydvchoq). It's adorned with some festive graffiti currently if I'm not mistaken.

Well here's some news to brighten up your Tuesday! Demolition permits have been applied for the 310 Prospect Ave. building. Cause, ya know, what that nabe really needs is more surface parking! Start yer emails to Building & Housing (Ed Rybka, [email protected]) and the Planning Commission (Bob Brown, [email protected]). :-)

WTAM is a clear channel station so you can hear it at night in most of the easter half of the US http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WTAM You can get WTAM at least as far south as Washington DC at night too. But only when travelling on letter streets, not numbers.

Cleveland: Random Development and News
No matter the viability of the Rockometer plan, the Coast Guard just very quietly received $18 million in federal funding to rebuild their station at East 9th and Marginal. So don't expect that parcel to come available for private development ANYTIME soon. As a plus, at least we can add this to the list of projects to watch over the next decade.

Cleveland: The Residences at 668 Euclid Avenue
Thanks for the pics as always, Mayor. And I have to say, one truly has to see the building in person to a) realize how discombobulated it looked before the sealant; and b) how truly attractive it looks now. Yes, it has lost some definition of the individual terra cotta tiles, but apparently the process was enough for the National Parks Service and their Historic Tax Credits. And it's immeasurably better than the gaping eyesore it was just a few short years ago. Sometimes it's okay to let perfect be the enemy of good, but I don't think that this is such a case.

Cleveland: The Residences at 668 Euclid Avenue
I think people are jumping the gun a little bit on this...I suspect it's a little bit more sophisticated than just "paint" especially if this is a process that was used on the Terminal Tower. And look at how awesome that restoration has turned out. Having seen the building on an almost daily basis, I can say that, IMHO, the patchwork of darker, original terracotta and brilliant white replacement pieces would not have been an attractve look over the long run.

Agreed. That's one of my favorite stretches in all of Cleveland. I especially love the ivy covered townhomes. Anyone know the story behind them? Were there more on that stretch at one time? And nice photo thread, Clueless!

Sorry for taking this off-topic, but Cleburger, since this seems to be your "thing", why don't you take a look at this website for a detailed list of ARRA projects in Cleveland. Also, notice how dark the green in Cuyahoga County is compared to the rest of the state. I don't think we here in Northeast Ohio have much room to complain. http://www.recovery.org/for_businesses.aspx?gloc=Ohio*OH&mloc=OH And if you're more of a visual learner, the official Recovery.gov website has a pretty map you can zoom in and look at each project at street-level, with some astoundingly informative info available about each recepient: http://www.recovery.gov/transparency/pages/home.aspx?State=OH

Cleveland: Weston / Gilbane Warehouse District Plans
^^ For those that are new around here, somewhere buried deep in the Pesht thread there's an interesting discussion on the Check-Cashing building. Believe it or not, that bastardized structure is actually one of the oldest (or _the_ oldest) building standing downtown.

Cleveland: Downtown Cleveland Alliance News & Discussion
I understand, but that's just bass ackwards. The point is, this is our front door, our most cherished public space in the city. Your argument is a bit obtuse. It doesn't seem like you are saying that city employees are sitting at home, twiddling their thumbs, and losing wages, but that the city is scheduling their resources elsewhere. The union guys aren't losng out on this, they're working just as much as they would be if they were spending more time on PS, but just doing that work elsewhere. Croc tears. Good leadership is about knowing your limitations. It seems that the union needs to recognize that as long as they are the stewards of PS, it will continue to be an embarrassment. It's not their fault, I'm sure they could do just as good a job as DCA given the resources. But they need to accept the reality that they won't be able to do the job there that they wish or is needed, and cede this battle (and relieve themselves of the burden of PS) to the DCA so they can more effectively use their resources elsewhere in the city. Public Square should transcend politics.

Cleveland: Downtown Cleveland Alliance News & Discussion
This is what is so perplexing to me. Why does the union, who made such a stink about the DCA cleaning on Public Square, and thus associated itself so publicly with the maintenance and upkeep of this space, allow it to continue to be such an embarrassment. This looks so poorly on them, and I'm someone who is not entirely opposed to the organized labor movement. CWe need to contactal the PD, Mayor Jackson, Councilman Cimperman, and the Public Service Commissioner (Rob Mavec) until we see satisfactory progress. As an aside, it's my understanding that the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Transit Center will remove some of the bus traffic away from PS. Can anyone comment on this?

I suggest you take this up with the dipsh!ts that are preventing the DCA Safe & Clean Ambassadors from doing their jobs on Public Square.
