Cleveland: I-77 & Pershing Industrial Park Site
KJP- can you elaborate on this? This definitely is worth talking about. This is property that Steel Warehouse purchased from Heidtman. Approx 80,000 square feet in the building going up, to house a temper line and laser cutting steel processing system. Total investment = $16,350,000, and 50 new jobs, at least until the economy picks up. Oh, and this is only Phase 1. Steel Warehouse hopes to purchase existing builidngs on the western edge of Heidtman Steel from Mittal for Phase 2, a fabricating shop that will employ an additional 50.

I've seen this one too and definitely took notice! But I wonder if perhaps they're market specific? I know that might seem like a lot of work, but it's really random. If you notice the Sprint billboards along the highway sport a night shot of the Cleveland skyline at night (looking from the east I believe), and I'm fairly certain those are just for NE Ohio. I'm be in Florida later in the week and see if they're running the same map.

Today, I Overheard Someone in my City Say...
Wasn't in my city, but was in Columbus yesterday. Scene: Sitting at the outdoor bar at Smith & Wollensky in Easton (please don't ask), around 8pm. Two women, probably in their early to mid 30s walk across the traffic circle in front. Holding hands. Guy 1: "Wow, would you look at that." Woman 1: "I guess it's 2-for-1!" Guy 2: "No comment. Just nooo comment! Wow." ...these utterance were not made in exactly flattering tones. I shot a glare across the bar and got up. For something that in today's world is not really an abnormal event, I'd like to think that there wouldn't be a similar reaction if this happened on, say, East 4th Street, but I can't kid myself.

Shaker Heights: Van Aken District Transit Oriented Development
Honestly, I don't want the green line to go there. I want the company's there to relocated downtown. I want it to make it harder for the outer boros to hire. I want a strong downtown. I know that sounds A$$ backwards as the green line goes right past my front door and I'm an advocate for rail expansion. I think we can have a healthy downtown and businesses that chose to locate outside of the CBD. Look at Eaton, they snubbed downtown yes, but not because it's downtown Cleveland. It the whole concept of a headquarters campus environment that they embraced and it wouldn't make a difference if they had been headquartered in DT Cleveland, Chicago, NYC, or DC. While it may sting, at least they found the environment they were looking for in suburban Cleveland and not suburban DC or Atlanta. Green line to Chagrin Highlands would remove another obstacle (real or perceived) for employees of Eaton, UH, DDR, and whoever else locates there to at least live in the city, go to restaurants in the city, find their entertainment options in the city, and not stay captive to their artificial suburban nodes. Besides, maybe kids growing up in Orange, Beachwood, Pepper Pike, etc might have a different opinion of their hometown if they had an easy & convenient transportation link to Cleveland's assets. Another, small way to fight the brain drain.

Shaker Heights: Van Aken District Transit Oriented Development
This week's Crains has an orgy of a special section devoted to the I-271 Corridor. It all makes me throw up a bit in my mouth (although I begrudgingly accept that it is an important component of our regional business attraction efforts; See Northern Virigina, VA-267 Technology Corridor), but there was an interesting nugget from Tom Sudow, vp of business attraction for Team NEO. In reference to Chagrin Highlands, he notes that "A lack of public transportation can work against an employer." Umm, hellloo BLUE Line extension! If the region's largest chamber of commerce were to get behind such a project, it seems it would provide a huge jump start to reconsidering this plan. Maybe someone (ehhm KJP?) could get in touch with Mr. Sudow and alert him to the very realistic solution to the lack of public transit at Chagrin Highlands. EDIT: Blue is indeed what I meant. -1 for typing out posts on a smartphone.

Cleveland: Downtown: Euclid & 9th Tower / Schofield Building Redevelopment
Yes, and I can tell you that, in my mind, it's a lot better choice the Hotel Indigo (which always seemed a lil hooky to me). Well for what it's worth, a memorandum of understanding HAS been signed with an operator. That doesn't mean there's anything set in stone, but that's a pretty darn good first step. And the hotel is?? You can't just blurt that out and not give details. Hotel indigo's are a holiday Inn brand. It's their "boutique" brand. With some work they could be decent. Just not for me. I'm afraid I can't say. It's not something I'm really supposed to know in the first place, and while I don't know if it's intended to be a secret or not, I'd rather let the developer make an official announcement. He's kept things pretty close to his chest thus far which, in light of what's happened with FEB, Ameritrust, Pesht, etc, is in a way refreshing. All signs seem to point that this project will continue to progress (none of the damage they've uncovered thus far seems to be anything they hadn't anticipated) so I'm sure we'll be hearing more, official news about this in the near future.

Cleveland: Calfee Building (Rockwell and East 6th)
Just skimmed Colliers Q2 2009 Market Report, and it mentioned that "1403 E 6th St in Cleveland (CBD) had been sold for $1.3 million to "Popeyes Marina." I think this is the Rockwell Building, former WKYC headquarters, that had been slated for the Staybridge Suites hotel conversion. My gut tells me this is not a good development...anybody have more info on this?

Cleveland: 2014 Gay Games IX News & Discussion
The Rock Hall said it was the largest event they had held, either ever or in recent memory, and that they're going to it'll be the gold standard for all such events in the future. The turnout was AMAZING, with an incredibly diverse crowd (not just LGBT), an absolutely beautiful night, and hopefully an impressed selection committee.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Of course I didn't think MTS was serious! Even on his worst days, I think throwing acid would be below even him. Maybe. But that incident from a few years back was the first thing that came to mind when he mentioned it. But I do think throwing the bag at the rider would have been pretty priceless...saurkraut juices streaming out and all!

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Good for you Doc. You should have thrown it on his a$$ or at least taken a picture and turned it in to the police. Yeah, the mister said he probably would've thrown it out the door at him..... As our resident mad scientist, don't you carry chemicals or potions? You could've thrown a lil "something, something" on him. Umm...in poor taste much? :| Woman, two others injured by acid thrown on bus http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2007/07/woman_two_others_injured_by_ac.html

From what I've heard, the latest design will even save many of the existing trees. But to echo the others, wish we could get some of the latest renderings up in here!!

Graduating in an economic downturn...
Just for reference, April unemployment rates in the Ohio Big-3, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics: Cincinnati: 9.1% Cleveland: 9.0% Columbus: 8.2% Oh, and those upstart sunbelt cities we're always jealous of? Atlanta: 9.1% Charlotte: 11.4% Dallas: 6.6% Houston: 6.3% Jacksonville: 9.2 Las Vegas: 10.4% Memphis: 9% Miami: 8.5% Nashville: 8.7% Orlando: 9.7% Phoenix: 6.8% Portland (ok, not sunbelt, but still often put on a pedestal): 11.6% San Diego: 9.1% Tampa: 10.1% Folks, this recession is hitting hard EVERYWHERE, which is why I think we are probably actually seeing a slow-down in the Ohio "brain-drain" right now. And despite perceptions, maybe we aren't as bad off in Ohio, at least at the moment, as we think we are. After all, there's always Detroit: 13.6% (Source: http://blog.cleveland.com/business_impact/2009/06/long-metro-unemployment.pdf)

Cleveland: Marketing the City
The Travel+Leisure magazine America's Favorite Cities 2009 Survey is up. Go on and vote for Cleveland, there was a great campaign last month to get in on the ballot, and now its up against 30 other cities, including the apparently crowded Chicago. Vote early and vote often! http://www.travelandleisure.com/afc/2009/survey/index.cfm

The victims were buying drugs? Where did you read this? Whoa...Not to take this further off-topic, but I think it needs to be pointed out that the above quote is misattributed. It wasn't HJG that made the drugs link, but Willyboy. And from what I recall, the whole drugs scenario -- while it seems incredibly likely -- was never officially confirmed. Okay, end off topic rant.

That's great to hear. I love Presto in Fairview Park, and the immigrant (i believe)/chef/owner is always warm and welcoming. Wish it the best of luck!

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
I'm not going to go quite so far...He merely just highlighted that the Nashville "idea" is getting some attention in TradeshowWeek, a reputable source, as well as in a Nashville alt-weekly by a former-Clevelander. Kotz's quote is reallllyyy amusing (glad to see he's matured journalistically and rhetorically since leavine the CleveScene...not!) but still, this is HJG's little blog section and that's what you do on blogs, post links to things that might otherwise go unnoticed. I don't think HJG took any sort of unfair, negative editorial tone himself.

Cleveland City Council
Don't get me started....cause i'm not one to gossip, however, "how you doin??" I think "it's" a little more than gossip...if you want real gossip, let's discuss Marcia Fudge! ;) Do tell! I'm all ears.. literally! We're getting waaayy off-topic here, but let's just say that the same gossip you were referring to in regards to Zack Reed would equally and with apparently good authority apply to Congresswoman Fudge.

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
This is a reaction that I had at first as well, but I think in the end its a little melodramatic. Charitable giving across the entire country has dried up, this is not merely a Cleveland thing. And when you consider the amount of money that was bequeathed to the CMA, the Orchestra, etc, from certain individual donors in their respective formative years, well, you just don't see that done much anymore. We're lucky we had the money back then to create these great institutions, and frankly, you are not seeing such similar scale of generosity in Miami, Phoenix, Charlotte, etc. today as you saw in Cleveland, Detroit, Pittsburgh, etc back in the 1910s and '20s. Do I wake up everyday and wish I had hundreds of millions of dollars that I could donate to orgs. such as the Trolley Museum? Of course! But those who do have such money to give are today rightfully dividing their fortunes up between a multitude of worthwhile organizations, rather and very rarely providing for the entire funding needs of a single museum or foundation. This doesn't help orgs such as the trolley museum, but it seems that if you want to attract the attention and generosity of large donors today, you need to have a clear, sustainable business plan, and open and transparent books. I don't know much about the trolley museum organization beyond what I read on here and what I read in the PD, but it seems like their very quickly acquired a number of trolley cars without a viable plan for what they were really going to do with them. They were clearly enthusiasts, but it seemed like maybe they too aggressively pursued the fun part (buying the "toys") and hoped everything else would fall into place.

Cleveland: Tyler Village
Is he related to Art Vandaley from Seinfeld? :-D That's it.. I couldn't remember what the name was. Hahaha...this was sitting here for a few days, I'm glad someone finally caught it. Oh, Seinfeld.... But wow, this tenant mix at Tyler is blowing my mind. Waaay beyond anything I previously envisioned. Congrats, willow.

Cleveland: Old Brooklyn Neighborhood Discussion
I'm hoping there must be a logical explanation for this. Does Zeleznik's not have TVs or something? That would be killer on a Cavs playoff night. And remember...Cleats may be a chain, but it is a local chain (founded in 1996 in North Royalton I believe). I can't stand the place personally, but give them credit for being a successfully run local business that has been able to reap the rewards of it's apparently effective management/loyal following.
