Cleveland: Port Authority News & Info
This seems like a good pick up for Cleveland. No matter your personal opinion of Charlotte, you've gotta respect the magnitude of their growth and it seems that this guy was intimately involved with that. Lakewood: Development and News
brtshrcegr replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Northeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionI must have missed it earlier. Still good news, because several businesses along that stretch have closed in the past 6 mos. Music store, Cleats, bridal/tailor shop. I can never tell if that cereal place is open or not. Nice to see something locally unique going in. If only Five Guys was "local" or "unique." But it does sound like the franchisee has some interesting plans for that buildng beyond just putting the restaurant in, having bought the whole thing. Fingers crossed...

Where do I live? Please help
Ice, do you have any updates? I only ask because I have to agree with everyone that's posted so far, it sounds like the HRH relocation "specialist" is really full of it, and I would hate to here that they steered you wrong. If you found a place that suits you downtown, I'd really encourage you to take a closer look at it! And as far as downtown being "too far"...it's 5.9 miles from Public Square to HRH, so unless your planning on walking it everyday, I think that's a pretty misinformed statement. As others have mentioned, the aptly-named HealthLine would offer you door-to-door service. Check out this Google Maps link for details, and you can also change around the addresses to see what kinda transit options (and trip times) you would have from other potential apartments: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=Public+Square,+Cleveland,+Ohio+44114&daddr=13951+Terrace+Rd,+Cleveland,+OH+44112+(Cleveland+Clinic+Health+System:+Meridia+Huron+Hospital)&hl=en&geocode=%3BCbH3I0bNBmxoFcifeQIdvh0j-yFVX1AAU8tXWw&mra=pe&mrcr=0&dirflg=r&date=11%2F22%2F08&time=3:23pm&ttype=dep&noexp=0&noal=0&sort=&sll=41.502064,-81.662558&sspn=0.126762,0.216293&ie=UTF8&ll=41.502921,-81.639748&spn=0.126761,0.216293&z=12&start=0

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
Yea, this is the money-shot! Two UAE 744 and a BBJ in one frame...at CLE, haha. I saw one of the 744s parked next to A Concourse and the two UAE BBJs over near Air Services when I was flying to DC last week. It's amazing how the 744 dwarfs the terminal. I can't imagine what is was like seeing two of them parked together like that at CLE, you really can't get a sense of their true size in pictures. EDIT: Definitely want to credit Chuck Slusarczyk Jr. at www.opshots.net for this great picture.

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
Yeah, I was really disappointed with that blurb, I usually expect more from Crains. HMS is simply doing what they said they did when Hopkins announced there deal with BAA. They are getting kicked out, so they will no longer being employing anybody at CLE....logical, no? And at the time of the announcement, BAA stated that they would attempt to rehire as many HMS employees as possible...also logical. Why Crains omitted this is perplexing, heaven forbid they're adopting the editorial style of the PeeDee!

What Obama may mean for Cities
Huh? Do you know what a "lame duck" is in politics? Hint: President Bush is one, but only as of yesterday. Yes it means a president that nobdoy likes ! Please don't be personally offended by this, but if you're going to make blanket predictions on the relative success (or failure) of an Obama administration, comments like these pretty much negate taking anything you might say seriously. The same goes for those who claim that there's "no real difference between the two candidates." If this is really what you believe, I'd suggest you brush up on such topics as the Iraq War, the Supreme Court, tax policy, etc., etc. So you know, as X was so subtly hinting, a "lame duck" is an elected official who remains in office after an election in which he/she either lost, or was not a candidate. That's high school civics class stuff, folks. But to get back on topic, I also believe that Obama's election does provide hope for increased attention to cities...certainly when you consider that the other guys referred to our urban areas as "Fake America"! If you want to see what impact the President can have on the health of our cities, take a look at the impact Clinton had: Empowerment Zones, Community Development Block Grants, drastically increased law enforcement funding, etc. And the Bush administration decimated all of these programs. And let's not even get started onto the manner in which Reagan turned his back on Urban America. It sounds as if Obama intends to reenergize Federal attention on the plight of our cities, and it's our responsibility to keep the pressure on him and the Democratic Congress. As an addendum, the fact that Democrats are now in control in the State House in Columbus is wonderful news for those who are arguing that change will come more effectively from the local and state levels. Armond Budish will be the first Speaker of the House from the Cleveland-area in over 70 years. And we'll no longer be at the mercy of all the rural Republican State Reps who year-after-year torpedoed spending programs that targeted our big cities (especially public transportation funding!).

 After all of the "pretty" shots of Beijing that MTS posted in the Olympic thread, I thought we needed a little flavor of what it looks like when the Olympics aren't in town. And apparently it resembles Ulaanbaatar. You're up, Neville! Where the hell in Beijing was that? I mean damn that must have been from last year, the smog is ridiculous. Northwest Third-Ring Road...actually just a few miles from the Olympic site. From January 2007, when those coal-fired furnaces are going strong!

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
There's also a very detailed article about these issues in this week's Crains (hopefully someone with online access can post) and suffice it to say, I'm feeling less and less bad about losing Eaton. They had some pretty outrageous demands (dictating the design of the E&Y tower? Sign-off and a 2 floor limit to any future buildings to be built on the lakefront? C'Mon!!) and so at this point I say good riddance. The Flats parcel is too good for what Eaton was planning. Now, the right project, when it comes along, will be able take full advantage of this incredibly unique location.

Cleveland: Random Development and News
I'm sorry, but JESUS H! If the MIDWAY MALL area of ELYRIA can get a Chipotle, Downtown Cleveland should have had theirs, oh, 35 or so years ago! Seriously, here's another contact form, this time for Goodman. It seems that petitioning them would be even more effective than going to Chipotle corporate. http://www.goodmanrealestate.com/contactus.asp 327, you're list was really thorough, and hilarious. I'll throw out 515 Euclid garage as a suggested location. As great as Public Square would be, 515 would be a little more centrally located for the entire downtown working population, and it already kinda has the modern, Chipotle aesthetic. Any other thoughts?

No. Alright, I'll say that I was surprised this city wasn't already in the thread, I had to go back and make sure. It's not obscure at all, and one of the guesses was really pretty close.

Cleveland: Random Development and News
Well not to demean Erie, but I think we may have a little bit more compelling of a case for a Chipotle in Downtown Cleveland than they do. I mean, we have more people that work in DT Cleveland alone than live in all of Erie. So yeah, let's get a campaign going...or at least a blitz of comments on their website. But I guess we should settle on a location first. I think the East Ohio Building on E.9th sounds pretty good, but any other suggestions?

Cleveland: Random Development and News
And as luck would have it, it seems that Chipotle is rather open to such suggestions: http://www.chipotle.com/#flash/development It's a shame they don't franchise, because I think we could scrounge up enough support to open up probably yesterday our own little UO Chipotle downtown.

Cleveland: Downtown: The 9 / Rotunda / County Admin Development
 This is great news...and the second of the week. I'd been getting a little worried about the silence surrounding this project in light of the credit crisis, but it's good to here that the wheels are still in motion, as illustrated by this as well as Price's comments in the Crain's article about the Euclid Corridor: "Mr. Price said the HealthLine also pushed K&D to submit what would turn out to be the only bid to buy the former Ameritrust complex from Cuyahoga County for a planned, $200 million apartment, hotel and office project. K&D is working overtime to put together a financing package for the Ameritrust project despite the credit deep freeze, but Mr. Price vows to continue pursuing the county purchase."

Here's a pic I'm pretty proud of, not realizing how well it turned out until weeks later. I wish I woulda spent some time playing around with the optics and composure instead of just taking the one shot. Anyway, here goes:

Well aren't we getting picky! As I understand it, Monaco is a City-State, and Monte-Carlo is a district within it...either way, I'm pretty sure that's what we're looking at.

Ohio LGBTQ+ News
Apparently Google has publicly come out in opposition of California's Proposition 8, which would eliminate the newly-granted rights of same-sex couples to marry in the state. It will be interesting to see – not to mention quite the commentary on corporate America – if any other companies do the same: http://www.amplifyyourvoice.org/u/afy_kathy/2008/9/30/Google-rocks-my-socks#comments

Cleveland: University Circle: Cleveland Clinic Developments
^^^Gosh, that really is a shame that they're not considering the MTC. It would be a great synergy between the CCF campus 35 blocks to the East and that part of Midtown, and could further encourage development on that stretch of Euclid. Not to mention provide some additional bulit-in ridership for the HealthLine...and further validation of its name! What about that huge warehouse next to the Dunham Tavern at E. 66 and Euclid that RTA de-façaded? It'd be wonderful to see that occupied again...and possibly with an equal number of high-paying, high-skilled workers as worked in it 80 years ago, under a much different environs. What a validation to the transitioning of Cleveland's economy that would be!

Cleveland: National City Bank News & Info
The people down in Charlotte are really scrambling over the news with Wachovia...make sure and take a look at the comments to entry...many apparently fear they're the next Detroit!: http://marynewsom.blogspot.com/2008/09/how-wachovia-sale-affects-charlotte.html It's seems that Charlotte's lack of economic diversity (e.g. all of its eggs in the banking industry) is really causing people to panic. This also is likely to affect the new, 48 (?) story Wachovia headquarters being built, as well as a condo high rise and performing arts complex. Personally, I'm guiltily enjoying seeing these people who deserted OUR REGION for seemingly greener pastures now realize that even they are vulnerable to economic challenges. But I know – whether or not their bottom line is as sound as they've described it – there is the chance that the same fate could await NatCity. And while we are certainly much better diversified than Charlotte, we all know that the sale of NCC would be a net negative for Cleveland.

MTS, I take it maybe you mom is the first commenter on PD link? I've been there are really enjoyed it. Yeah, based on the decor, it feels a little out of place, but so what? The prices are reasonable, the food is great, and I suspect the people of Cleveland Heights and University Circle will appreciate another swanky option once in a while. Now, it would really be great if they would consider opening up another spot in UARD...or give it a go there if it doesn't work out in its current spot (although my waiter said they're doing quite well so far). It would be PERFECT for those environs.
