Cleveland: Downtown: Progressive Field
While I think I’d rather see the signature script Cleveland ‘gram prop instead of this clunky assemblage, WOW, what a cityscape in the background! From this pic, the variety of buildings and textures and layering almost has a Universal Studios soundstage vibe to it - in a good way!

Airline Industry News and Discussion
And the legacies encourage/enable this MUCH more than Frontier/Spirit/other LCCs. (Ask me how I know). Again, there’s nothing inherent about the LCCs that deserve the ire of either the public or government regulators. It’s the behavior of passengers (and yes, how their fellow passengers react when the blood pressure gets flowing) that create the problems.

This. The problem isn’t the airlines here…it’s the passengers.

Yea I don’t get this take either. I happen to choose not to fly the LCCs (mostly because of legacy carrier golden handcuff FF accounts) but do not bemoan those that do. And much like Warren Buffet driving a Buick or whatever, I know high income earners that chose to do so, so it’s not strictly a “class” thing. Unless and until there are actual safety deficiencies from their price cutting elsewhere (and take a look at the record of Frontier/Spirit vs the Big 4 and you’ll find that relationship is inverse…), let them fly!

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
Hmm…Constant is based at Hopkins, and has a facility in Sanford. And is an existing Embraer authorized service center. And they are under the FlexJet umbrella now, who fly a bunch of Embraer PJs. As much as I’d love for this to be a new addition by Embraer, something tells me Kenn Ricci just got a nice windfall of Brazilian Reals. Not bad either way, surely this will drive more business to the MRO. But probably not a completely new hanger and hundreds of jobs in the nearterm.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
What a strange piece (and I’ve read the FT for decades). While I like where Cleveland placed overall (and that two of the accompanying articles, as you mentioned, focused on Cleveland and Ohio overall…no other region got nearly that much attention), the methodology is just strange. Washington, DC got 0/100 for quality of life, while Lincoln NE is 100/100?! (Cleveland got 61, btw) Oh well, take the W I guess. Just goes to show how dubious these lists are, for better or worse.

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
I think you’re over-emphasizing what, to me, appears to be a small component of the much larger Port of Cleveland, which no one is suggesting be renamed. Welcome being corrected, but the plans are merely highlighting a new structure in which DHS will operate from, nothing more than that. We haven’t seen detailed plans for the Hopkins rebuild yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a (small) section near the likely international gates designated as “Homeland Security”, to show where CPB will control the flow of inbound international passengers. Let’s not make a mountain out of a molehill.

Cleveland: Downtown: Progressive Field
Fair enough. Given only the top sign is probably visible to Innerbelt drivers, then one of the bottom two (which appear visible to both pedestrians and surface street drivers) has to go.

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
Because that’s what it is. As the parent organization of Customs and Border Protection, DHS is who will occupy the building. And since there may even be other DHS components there given the port, it makes sense to call it the Homeland Security (note the capitalization) building. And yes, I would imagine that GSA would either construct the building themselves or enter into a long-term lease for it.

Cleveland: Downtown: Progressive Field
Holy hell, WAY too much “Progressive Field” on that corner. I think two times is the limit. If it already says “Progressive Field” twice in my direct line of sight, do I really need to be welcomed to “Progressive Field” a third time?!

Cleveland: Downtown: Tower City / Riverview Development
It’s probably anti-flash white. Which is smart for a fallout shelter so A+ to the design team there. But, as you can see, they’re using a few different shades of grey on the pedestal, too. Ugh! Why can’t we build anything but grey buildings in Cleveland!

US Economy: News & Discussion
These are only issues to those unfamiliar or new to driving EV cars. You quickly get a handle as to what 20% range in your vehicle means, and how long you can go before you will need to find a charge point. No different than when you see 20% gas remaining in your ICE car. We are so used to it in ICE cars, but we are always making a risk calculation as to how far we need to go before we need to pull over to refuel, whether with petroleum or electricity. I’ve run out of “gas” multiple times in an ICE car, and never in an electric car. So, for me, I know which one is more likely to leave me stranded. There is battery degradation from DC, fast charging, but you overplay the significance of it. The fact is batteries are a wear item (although over a very long lifecycle) and they will degrade over time no matter how you charge them. As do alternators, head gaskets, transmissions, etc on ICE cars. But you’re not leaving your Taurus just because you may need a new engine at 300k miles (and most battery warranties are 8-10 years, or 70% of charge). And the degradation from DC fast charging is highly monitored and mitigated by the controls of the onboard charging complementary, metering charging when needed to reduce additional wear. That first road trip between Ohio and Florida, by the way, was in 2017. Never ran out of electricity, or had to hunt for a Supercharger. The ensuing six years has made the situation only exponentially better. I am a gearhead, and I’ve had a wide variety of ICE cars, both classic and modern, gas, diesel, and electric— and I fell in love with “supercharging” long before Tesla had anything to do with the term. All I can say is, if you haven’t tried out an EV, do yourself a favor and give it a chance. If you can put aside any associated baggage for the moment, you might just be surprised. Electric cars are not perfect and have drawbacks, but so does every other vehicle on four wheels.

As someone who has done the road trip between Ohio and Florida in a Tesla, 💯 this. In fact, it was the most pleasant of the many times I have done that slog

Cleveland SC Soccer Stadium
Props to the Current for advertising their team and the fact they have the world’s first women’s soccer-specific stadium at the recent World Cup in Sydney. When I saw those signs I realized that the Cleveland NWSL team could be a pretty impressive draw!

Cleveland: Hotels, Conventions, and Tourism News & Info
Hilton is most definitely not shelving Doubletree, in fact it was one of the most successful flags for Hilton in and out of the pandemic. (Source: Close friend is an SVP for Hilton). That said, based on what you said it sounds like the owner in Independence is at risk for having their franchise agreement pulled.

Cleveland: Ohio City: Development and News
With both county and city involvement, and now this article, there are a lot of adults and eyes now looking at this, a comparatively small $500k loan. I appreciate a lot of the threads that the article tried to pull, but it seemed just short of a “there” there. Certainly not something systemic. Let’s see how the next few months go as Hartnett is required to provide the required documentation to maintain the loan.

For real. I had to check it out for myself to believe it. But that is the case. Maybe not the choice I would’ve made if I was unconnected to Cleveland and designed their website, but I love it.

East Cleveland: Development and News
What an interesting projection. And I wonder if that might not be the most feasible way forward, eventually. And while technically part of the built-out inventory of Cuyahoga County, it could be the opportunity to land massive, economic development or relocation projects. Annex it, Columbus style. Without disturbing the remaining population, remediate the abandoned areas to be re-developed, and lure projects that could massively contribute to Cleveland‘s tax base. Intel phase 8 looking for more land? How about the 1800 contiguous acres of newly developable in the East Cleveland neighborhood of Cleveland.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
A poster on Reddit claimed to be an employee at Constant and involved on the installation of some new equipment (Starlink system, specifically) on the Elon jet. No evidence of anything beyond some minor systems upgrades on the plane, if that is to be believed (and would explain the multi-day stay). Didn’t realize that Constant’s reputation was such that it would be worth flying over all the other MROs closer home to Elon, but makes sense if so. Wish it was a sexier explanation!
