  2. ^These grants, as I understood were only eligible for projects that were very near construction or had already begun. Anything in pure speculative phases was ineligible. I could be mistaken.

I just love that Literary Road pic. @KJP+Mayday, if it is indeed John D. and Standard Oil... maybe it goes to Western PA where Standard Oil had their first oil fields... transportation to the refineries on the Cuyahoga, though I would have thought they would be on different more directly East bound right-of-ways...other guesses would be (cheated, google: February 25, 1848, incorporating the Bellefontaine and Indiana Railroad Company (of Ohio)-March 14, 1856, agreement for joint operation between Indianapolis, Pittsburg and Cleveland and the Bellefontaine and Indiana Railroad Companies.)
