Slow Train to Paradise
^ I agree, when I was younger (not so long ago) I wanted to be a train conductor so bad... had the electric train set, only about ten feet of track but I cant tell you how many times I took apart that track and made new shapes and took sticks and tried to make it look like the professional dioramas etc... I sometimes forget how into trains I used to be. thanks again!

Cleveland: Shaker Heights
Wow I just noticed this thread looking through old sets... very interesting. MyTwoSense, you sound like me! I grew up on, still live on, Carlton Rd. next to Courtland Blvd. and I had the same sentiments, there was never anything to do as a kid, which is why the focus on redevloping the end of the Blue line, Van Aken and Chagrin is so important. I dont think Shaker is "falling" or going anywhere. The trend of ex-urbs is what is falling and as all the kids that grew up in the middle of no where make money and decide where to live they are going to pick the city, or if they are fortunate enough a place like Shaker over no name exurb fill in the blank. In 1962 Shaker was the richest per capita city in America and though it isnt going to reclaim that title any time soon I disagree with anyone who thinks its headed for the tanks. Not to be rude, but you dont GET shaker. People here are different, I am white and of my group of ten closest buddies, there were only two other white guys... seven of us made national merit, five went to Ivys and the rest went to great schools. People dont move here to be like other people, they come here to take part in a social experiment. We redefiend race relations, we have a strict zoning board that my dad loves to hate and as far as planning goes, the Van Sweringes did a top notch job. The roads between the main streets (say for example South Woodland and Shaker BLVD.) dont go straight thorugh (except major streets, Lee, Attleboro, Torrington/Eaton, Courtland, Warrensville) they bend and create beautiful "garden" inspired vistas. Some people call us limosuine liberals, others call us ass holes. But I'm from Shaker Heights and I have to say, if I had to be born in a suburb, Ide pick Shaker. History, Housing Stock, Schools, Progressive Additude, Light Rail, Diversity (not perfect but where is?)... I'll take that over cookie cutter-r-us haters.

Assaults on Street Photographers
Evergrey I agree with you but certain people dont give a sh^t about that, C-dawg was correct in just getting out with his limbs in tact. There are some wack people out there, last thing your trying to do is trigger that "wackness" to come out.

Assaults on Street Photographers
Almost got jumped on Chester Ave in Cleveland taking pictures about four years ago... late afternoon, group of "gentlemen" across the street east of the greyhound station, I noticed they noticed me and began to create space, one guy kept following me as one walked around the block and the other was across the street. I figured I was being set up for a quick beat down and jump so I just threw my camera in my backpack and just sprinted towards reserve square/union club area of DT Cleveland.... probably looked like a pussie but I was a 16 year old white boy from shaker heights taking pictures and looked like an easy target. Lucky for me I have a bunch of friends on Kinsman and Buckeye so Im not oblivous to this kinda activity, bounce bounce bounce.

Toledo: Random Development and News
Developer buys diner for return to downtown oasis; joint to flip sites for new operation Article published September 18, 2008 By JC REINDL BLADE STAFF WRITER That neon-lit era of 24-hour diners and the 3 a.m. ButterBURGER could soon return to downtown Toledo. The White Tower diner at Jefferson Avenue and 10th Street, the first and last official outpost in the state of the restaurant chain, has a new owner who plans to dismantle, rebuild, and reopen it as an all-hours burger joint under the White Tower name. Bruce Rumpf, owner of Rumpf Development Corp. and the Job 1 USA staffing agency, bought the closed 1929 diner for $1 from the YWCA of Greater Toledo in a sale announced yesterday. Cleveland: Whiskey Island Coast Guard Station Redevelopment
We should make it a high stakes casino... alot of rich dudes would love to piss away some money there. Maybe the autobohn society could create a bird watching site? Or maybe a musueum on great lakes ecology that incorporates bird watching, fish studies, maritime.... just brain storming.

Beachwood: New Eaton Headquarters
Intresting note about the Eaton building, the old CEO of Medical Mutual built the Chisel Building and when he did Eaton wanted to occupy 18 of the 30 or so floors, from what I heard the deal fell through because the guy wouldnt let them name it Eaton Building... even though they were renting 66% or so of the building, so they built the Emerald City jock off... In other news, went to the Cimperman fundraiser today. It wasnt in Tremont like I said but rather Joes Little Bar and Grill on Frankfurt in the Warehouse District. Ciperman was in his usual good spirits joking about looking for a new home that was made of brick or stone... when I brought up Eaton he expressed his unhappines and then gave me his email and told me to contact him about more info. As far as approachable and positive, he's top notch. I personaly told him about UO.com and what we are and the wealth of knowledge pooled here. I am going to write him an email tomorrow which I will post and I will be sure to post the response... Frank Jackson didn't end up showing up as I had thought he would so no comment from the mayor as of yet. I'm just going to call his office tomorrow and see how far I get.

Lets use art to save Cleveland
^ I agree, hence I included the Dali example of abstract figuratism. (not sure if that is a word) I still havent thought this idea through, how to get it in front of people, the edge etc. I agree it shoudnt be a negative rant, you make a good point about keeping it positive... I need to take some time to think it out...

I will update accordingly and get back.

Lets use art to save Cleveland
You know, today I woke up and read about another company trying to bend Cleveland over and $%&# it. I have had enough. Lets put the spot light on the things tearing our city apart. The Plain Dealer hasnt any nuts or journalistic fortitude to do anything... politicians seem to be treading water at best and nobody is speaking up... calling a lie a lie and a dirty deed a dirty deed. I do not own a publication, I'm not an elected official and the company I started is too small to make waves yet. But I can draw. Lets get together our artistic minds and think how we can change perception in Cleveland. I am thinking of doing political cartoon type paintings depicting monsters (conviently labeled EATON, FCE etc.) pillaging the city... Right now I am full of ideas about how I can show the public, through art, what is actualy going on. An example, Salvador Dali's "AUTUMN CANNIBALISM" Depicts (figuratively) Spain eating itself in mutual cannibalism... an image of the Spanish Civil War that tore Spain apart. http://dali.urvas.lt/forviewing/pic09.jpg What do you think? Any other artists want to colaborate on some themes and make it happen?

Cleveland: SUPERMAN!
Nice! Can we send Metropolis Indiana (or illinois?) a letter telling them to kindly give up the schirade of having anything whatsoever to do with Superman? Seriously what a joke, grow some corn why dont you.

Cleveland: University Hospitals Expansion (University Circle)
As much as the Logo might suck, I think this will make it worth while: At the height of construction, the project is expected to create more than 5,000 jobs. UH anticipates more than 1,200 new hospital-based jobs will also be created.

Quote:Remember, these are people who mostly shop at Walmart and eat at chains, they don't CARE about what's good for Cleveland, they care about what's the cheapest. Macro vs. Micro Econ... in class I learned what is good for the individual is not always good for the collective... hmmmm

Im not trying to brag but I can get just about any person on the phone or set up a meeting... this isnt city politics... this is exactly what it looks like, corporate greed and short-sightedness. (of which cleveland has no limit)
