  1. Exactly. Untill the actual populace of a given city or area gets behind a project it just seems like pork. I guess I worded my comment incorrectly, it was more to say the general notion amongst clevelanders is one of helplessness. There is a severe lack of civic vision and momentum. There are a hodgepodge of ideas that seems every nostalgic, depressed, city circulates. Green energy, biotech, bio-med, med products and other trendy terms. I do not see this money coming from the national government as doing much to change any of that.
  2. Plot of land as seen from Terminal Tower: (photo credit to clevelandskyscrapers.com)
  3. Examples of ideas: Java Island, Netherlands: Imagine these canals opening to a cleaner cuyahoga with views of cleveland rising across the river, the west bank entertainment within minutes of your amazingly chic new residence in the heart of.... Cleveland... hell yeah.
  4. Scranton Peninsula is prime land near the heart of downtown that could be reasonably used, as a whole, in a new manner. I was curious as to what anyone could come up with as far as ideas and concepts for that area of land. I could envision a smaller scale but very intresting development that would consist of a web of canals criss-crossing the land and having 3-6 story buildings amongst the canals in a Hamburg or Amsterdam sort of idea. The result would be a completely new, intergrated, and distinctly diffrent neighborhood to cleveland. Pedestrian bridges could connect to new development on the west bank of the cuyahoga. The result could be stunning. What are your ideas?
  5. This project does not seem to have much support at city hall, or anywhere else for that matter,or am I miscalculating this projects supporters. It doesnt seem to me it will come to fruition.

I dont know anyone personaly at ODOT to my knowledge and yet I do not like them. intresting, it seems there are so many intrest groups involved with bugging ODOT that they cant help but piss off a few of them, though it seems the current plans piss off everyone. That should be indicative of something... just a thought.
  7. Milan looks like a very well maintained example of small town Ohio, I love it. Great pictures, I love cities connected to historical figures such as Edison. Superb!

I think the selection of FOA is excellent, first in the United States and first museum, we will be getting some original work here they will not want to blow their first attempt in the states. Im thrilled, I was saddened by the weak and overly refined appearance of the CMA exspansion, not to say it does not represent a great stride forward in itself.
  9. who is this lady of the shadows!
  10. ^Im from shaker heights and i love money and all the things it can provide but this kind of architecture and design has nothing to do with "money", it has everything to do with the vibe. As a student at OSU it is way too "squeaky clean" as was already remarked. President Holbrook has tried to stomp out everything fun, exciting, and yes sketchy, about campus, as well as off, and I simply feel this type of generic approach to design is lame. The buildings pictured while very nice as they may be, may as well be from any other city and have no distinct character. The Ohio State University students demand better! haha... im working at the US Open outside of pittsburg and im seeing lots og buckeyes out, good to see!
  11. i just got back from campus, i lived a block away, in my opinion the place is decent at best. very poor in responding to student intrests, replacing great hole in the wall bars with vastly expensive eateries and stores...
  12. My firm is now on board as the lobbyist for this project and when more news comes along I will update this thread, as it stands now we are approaching Strickland for a fairly large amount of TIF and other abatements, Mayor of Akron and Strickland both of whom are great friends with my boss want this to happen, its just a matter of economics at this point and how much revenue the state can part with in the interim.
  13. I try not to post pure opinion pieces but to add on to lewarctj's comments, I worked across the street at medical mutual last summer and even with life that building would serve as a poor conduit to relay those signs of life to east 9th. The entrance is set back behind monolithic black pillars and the building is being saved because this architect is famous for OTHER projects. If this tower had been erected by a no name of the same time period this building would be dust by now, architecture needs to be able to stand alone and this building does not merit its own continued existence.

KJP let me know if you hear about any meetings etc in the columbus area, i can cover those and in many cases get access to certain things using my firms name. Strickland spoke about alot of economic oppurtunities and his director of economic delveopment lives about 300 yards from me in shaker heights. Lee is on our side but its just getting ODOT to splurge when it is trying to get alot of things done with limited money. Its tough and when little or no local money is raised to complement costs its hard to make a solid run at getting your way.

No mov2 this firm is based in ohio but is the single most influential firm in the state, my boss goes out every other week with speaker hughsted and his wife and his, as well as holds consel with the governor, having been educated at oberlin in economics, its a great firm and steep in integrity, especialy for lobbying.

haha i know, it has been but alas i turn up in columbus of all places back from cambridge... life isnt bad, but seriously, everyone knows how conservative i can be and this governor impressed me with the kind of future he saw, almost of an earlier breed, he spoke of a possible rolls royce jet engine facility going into ohio with some sort of infrastructure aid involving the state totaling 400 million dollars, sizeable. A further possible 20 billion ohio and one other unamed state are on the short list for converning spear heading a national campaign to alter fuel dependency including ethenol, solar, wind, bio diesel and nuclear to name a few. We shall see.

I am an intern with a prominent lobbyist firm in Columbus and today we were at a reception with the govenor, the head of the ohio democratic party chris redfern, both of whom were discussing importance of flexibility in budgeting for large transportation projects and they mentioned this bridge in particular, the support at the states highest levels is there, lets see it pan out.
  19. I think its because of the way I dress but I never get approached... to be honest I wouldnt be suprised if some of that shit is undercover ready to bust your ass. Next time they offer you pure LSD take a picture and let me know.... :)
