i love the heat! id rather have heat than snow. hello, remember all those snow storms?! I do, and I'm one of those crazy people who prefers a foot of snow over hot and humid weather. Mid 70s to lower 80s is my idea of perfection though. I’m right there with you. We rarely get a foot of snow in Cincy, but I’ll take 20 degrees over the 98 it’s been the past few days. Anything below 20 really feels the same to me, it’s “cold.” You put a few layers on and you’re fine, though. Meanwhile anything over 90, or even 85 if it’s super humid (like it has been even at night here the past week or two) and it’s unbearably hot and you can only wear so few clothes to try and cope, but it’ still too hot.

I just finished moving to a loft that is on the 3rd and 4th floor of a walkup. The unit has central AC, but the stairwell did not. The heat index has been over 100+ in Cincy for what seems like the past month, which only added to the usual pain. The king size mattress was the hardest thing to deal with, weighs a ton and just flops around if you try to stand it on end. That sounds exactly like my old place; it's not right off Short Vine is it? Nope, it's down in OTR.

I’ve been taking care of patching/painting, but as for the rest of the stuff, I told her to hire some movers.
  4. Even if it wasn’t still classified, the bottom of the sub is more than 30' below water line when it's surfaced. It’d be tough to get it anywhere near Cincinnati during normal river levels, and once here it’d take a lot of work to build a custom dock for its display. Plus it probably cost about $1 billion to build originally, the Navy probably wasn’t eager to hand it over. I think having the conning tower is a nice and realistic compromise. Hopefully they open it up and don’t just leave it as some sort of statue.

Not exactly a street name, but I always liked the fact that I lived on the corner of 30th and 30th in Queens, NY, and there were two other "30th's" within a block. Made it hard to give anyone directions, as they always ended up on the wrong 30th. 30th Ave, St, Dr, and Rd all meet right by the 30th Avenue station. You can sort of move diagonal across the borough and see other places where similar things happen. Here's a link to explain what I'm talking about: http://www.bing.com/maps/?v=2&cp=40.76681225575326~-73.92277743320451&lvl=17&dir=0&sty=r&where1=30th%20Ave%20%26%2030th%20St%2C%20Astoria%2C%20NY%2011102&form=LMLTCC

I think it's a county thing. The counties around Cincy require gas stations to sell gas that is cleaner, and then they can do away with e-check. The net result is similar. The inspection thing is a joke anyway, at least it was in New York. There were plenty of places that would pass any car if you slipped a couple extra twenties in with your payment.

Hey, it's the first time in decades that any Cleveland sports fan has any reason to be happy, let him celebrate.
  8. It looks like only one proposed scheme for MLK requires taking any land from the Group Health Associates building, and it's just to build a retaining wall. From this PDF: http://www.cincinnati-oh.gov/transeng/downloads/transeng_pdf39476.pdf

"7.08 Any runner is out when -- (a) (1) He runs more than three feet away from his baseline to avoid being tagged..." I don't mean to be picky, but when a game-winning, "play of the game" type play is being celebrated so much despite being a very clear violation of the rules that even t-ballers get called out on, it bothers me. The Indians got the first game, but it could have been a different story; half the umps in MLB would have called whoever this Carrera guy is out on that RBI bunt.
  10. To this day I won't watch anything with Bill Cosby or Whoopi Goldberg in it because of their spearheading of the (albeit short-lived) boycott of Cincinnati after the riots in 2001.
  11. It seems like it'd be cheaper to convert that school into loft apartments of some type, sort of like the Emery Building. I think if that were done, and infill were built in the playground behind it'd make for a much nicer block. I don't know why Uptown's business model is so one dimensional.
  12. ^ Searching the Clerk of Courts website showed that on May 2, they lost a decision and owe $13041.28 in unpaid contracts to a plumber, which ended a long line of suits for unpaid work from a lot of different contractors. The latest decision ended in garnishment. Maybe they were ordered to close until they pay up?
  13. I love Queens, it all looks like that (or some gradient from medium-high to medium density) and seemingly goes on forever.
  14. They just had a big before/after type slideshow to mark the 10 year anniversary of the riots that was pretty good.
  15. I wish they would at least find a way to reuse some of the old factories instead of replacing them.
  16. As per the rules of council, a tie vote (which is I think what would happen if Bortz abstained) is automatically lost. I guess the outcome would depend on the wording of what was being voted on.
  17. ^ I graduate soon and depending on where/if I can find an architecture job, I would seriously consider one of the smaller units. That'd be at least a few months away though, so hopefully a few of the 40% of the units that aren't leased yet are still available.

Analysis: Ohio union law could save state $191M COLUMBUS - Ohio government analysts are estimating a new collective bargaining law could save state government about $191 million each year – a report greeted with skepticism by labor leaders and Democrats. More than $1 billion in annual savings are generated by the legislation once its impact on school districts, townships and other local governments is factored in, according to a study released Monday by the state’s Department of Administrative Services. The estimates were based on parts of the law dealing with health care costs and wages. 19. I've posted this elsewhere.. this is Vine St. in 1973, and an example of how I think signage should look. I'm not sure if it's a Gateway Quarter regulation or what, but the signs all being the same sizes and styles seems really bland to me; it looks too sterile for a lively urban setting. This photo came from the US National Archive Flickr photostream, if anyone is interested: http://www.flickr.com/photos/usnationalarchives/3887894424/#
  20. All I could find was an old article mentioning $4 million in CMAQ funding for the streetcar.
  21. Hopefully hipsters don't start to invade bars that I enjoy...
  22. Why not have daily/monthly/per ride fare cards that work on buses and the street car, you swipe them when you walk on, or a little plastic arm doesn't rotate out of your way. I don't know why having a small turnstile at each door would be such a problem, it wouldn't making loading/unloading passengers any slower than the bus (in fact, with a card it'd be quicker). There could occasionally be a non-uniformed conducted on board who grabs anyone who hops the turnstile, as there are in most of NYC's subway stations.
  23. Here's the article, from the source: http://www.siteselection.com/issues/2011/mar/top-metros.cfm
  24. There isn't a way to do a turnstile door on the streetcar? How many entrances/exits does each car have, and how many cars is Cincy planning to run?

The protests are understandable, as public sector union employees are the ones that are going to have to take the biggest personal hits, as they are the ones who have the most to lose from overspending. I hope that Ohio's democratic senators and representatives aren't as childish as those in Wisconsin, though. The entire party not attending a mandatory vote is an embarrassment to the democratic process.
