Ohio's 1st Congressional District
I got to see both of these guys talk last week as part of a class at UC, DAAP. Even in a class that mostly consisted of fairly liberal planning, design, and architecture majors - Driehaus didn't make so good of an impression. It wasn't a debate, they each just talked and took questions separately, for an hour each. Chabot gave pretty straightforward answers, even in shooting down the 3-C project (to a class half full of urban planners). Driehaus gave pretty convoluted responses most of the time.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
I don't think it really matters, the county has nothing to do with the project.

Off Topic
I have no idea what Randy Quaid is like in real life, but for some reason I can only picture him as Cousin Eddie from the National Lampoon movies. I can see him standing in that Canadian court room in cutoff jorts, with a beer in one hand, trying to claim asylum.

Cincinnati: Clifton Heights: U Square @ the Loop
What is "the Loop" supposed to refer to? Why not just University Square or something?

2010 Gubernatorial Election
I'm not sure if it's been pointed out, but all three of Ohio's major newspapers (Plain Dealer, Enquirer, and the Dispatch) have endorsed Kasich. On a side note, they all also endorsed Portman for Senate. The Enquirer usually leans to the right a little bit with their endorsements, but I'm not sure about the other two papers. I would think they would lean left most of the time?

2010 Gubernatorial Election
^ Odd, most respectable polls have Kasich up by quite a bit, even ones from earlier this week. I wonder how CNN got such a different result.

Did they get the wrong lamps on the right side (west)? Or is it the glare from Atrium making it look less bright? Or maybe the fixtures are just aimed wrong..

Philly Hack/Shock Writer Rips Cincinnati
Heh, just saw this. Philadelphia is really home to some of the most blatant assholes I have ever encountered. I saw a flock of 20 or so Phillies fans en route to a Mets game this summer in New York. They were all crushing cans of Keystone while walking down the streets of Chelsea. Talk about a class act! They made the bums look like they were putting on the Ritz. Now that I read this, I assume they were probably the sportswriters and reporters from Philly, if not the mayor and official delegation. As for this reporter, I thought he was in jail for throwing up on that little girl a few months ago? Is he out already?

Ohio's 1st Congressional District
Seems Democrats have considered this one a lost cause: Democrats yank $500K TV ad buy for Rep. Steve Driehaus In a sign that Democrats may be waving the white flag in Ohio’s 1st Congressional District, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) has pulled over $500,000 in TV advertising on Cincinnati TV stations in support of Rep. Steve Driehaus, the Price Hill Democrat who is trying to win a second term in Congress. http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20101012/NEWS0108/310120049/Dems-yank-ads-for-Driehaus

Cincinnati Reds Discussion
The Reds probably have to win the next two games, although the next time they see Halladay it will be in Cincy. Anyway, I was impressed with the Philly fans not throwing up on any little girls last night. That's a big step up for them.

New York City: Developments and News
It's not really the hacks that design schools, or Gehry for that matter, that are to blame for the ugliness of schools with condos on top that are popping up everywhere in Manhattam; it's the School Construction Authority.

New York City: Developments and News
^ No, I would say "Ground Zero" is just the site the WTC complex used to occupy, and maybe the streets that bound it. The mosque is really close to that site, though, so I don't really mind people calling it that. I think it's similar to people who call it a "community center;" they're both just descriptive names focusing on some aspect of the project. Yes, there is some aspect within the mixed-use occupancy that qualifies as a "community center" and yes it is very close to Ground Zero.

New York City: Developments and News
In another interesting note, if you go to the architects website and click on the renderings of this project, they are labeled as "Ground Zero," as Curbed points out: http://ny.curbed.com/archives/2010/10/01/park51_architects_say_mosque_is_in_fact_at_ground_zero.php I think it's safe to say we change the name of this thread back to Ground Zero Mosque, no?!

New York City: Developments and News
Nevermind the premise of this article, it's kind of odd and a hell of a stretch, even for somebody like me who has studied symbolism in architecture quite a bit. It does, however, have a look at some of the early renderings for the project. It looks like something I see designed by sophomores in architecture school all the time: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1317314/Ground-Zero-mosque-First-look-plans-New-York-Islamic-centre.html

Cincinnati Bengals Discussion
The Bengals managed to lose to the worst team in the NFL. They consistently play to the level of their opponents, which makes for exciting football in lieu of a playoff spot. At least there will be some worthwhile events taking place in the stadium next door this month.

Cincinnati Bengals Discussion
?? That was a pretty run of the mill touchdown celebration, it's not like it was anything worthy of a 15 yard penalty, as was the Brown's celebration earlier in the game. But I guess the "act like you've been there before" clause doesn't exactly apply to the Browns, on most occasions, at least.

Cincinnati Bengals Discussion
I'm sure there will be absolutely no problems getting the ball to him this weekend, except maybe the fact that 2 or 3 other receivers will always be open at the same time.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
^ They're focusing on the issue that the public cares most about. And of all the people I know that work for the enquirer, none of them are Republicans.

Racial Distribution Maps of Ohio's Cities
^Yeah, and it actually floods pretty regularly, since there isn't quite as much flood control upriver on the Little Miami. The whole plain is just a few feet above flood level.

Some nutjob from DailyKos started the "rumor" with absolutely no evidence. Show me a semen stained dress, at least.

What elevation is it at? It might actually appear to be taller than Carew, if we adjust for perspective.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
I've tried to explain that to him multiple times, but he just doesn't get it. He'd rather continue the fear tactic of throwing around the scary $400 million number even though it's meaningless for this discussion. Since you guys are continually taking my statements out of context to respond to, I’ll just leave it with this: if ODOT matched the $400 million, I’d probably be more supportive of the project. To make it simple, these are my concerns: 3-C could be an inferior service under the current plans, people will have bad experiences, and that will severely hamper public support for future rail projects (including improving the 3-C). My only statement about the $400 million was that it’s a lot of money to spend if it is on a mistake, but you can keep lumping me into your typical stereotype of anti-rail people if you don’t want to actually read my posts.
