Cincinnati: Clifton Heights: U Square @ the Loop
Subway is by far the worst uptown sandwich option. You guys are crazy, hating on Quiznos. It's a welcome addition to what is basically the CUF food court.

^ :-) I go downtown 3, 4, 5 times a week. Once or twice a month I do make a trip for Quiznos specifically, though. Have you been to Quiznos lately? It's pretty darn good. One of my favorite chains.

Quiznos is great, although this new branch will put an end to my bi-monthly (or so) trip downtown for the specific reason of going to Quiznos for lunch.

Exactly right. The free market is a figment of our imaginations. And the "common good" is only a fraction of a figment.

Yeah, that wall suddenly started to slip. I'm not sure what caused it, but the bulge is massive. It happened over the past couple of months, and about half of the building is closed off right now because of it.

^ I'm sure ODOT consulted John Boehner before they made these decisions years ago, and designed the entire stretch of I-75 with a "do not disturb John Boehner" mentality.

University of Cincinnati Bearcats Football Discussion
Rutgers was picked to win the Big East after a successful season last year, and lots of returning starters. UC went to Jersey on opening weekend and absolutely destroyed them. That's an impressive win, no matter how you put it. S. Fla could be a bit more impressive though, as they have proven more this season, as opposed to Rutgers who just had the pre-season hype.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
The comparison to Portland isn't a helpful one at this point, in my opinion. A whole lot of people have a negative view of the West Coast in general, and telling them that the streetcar will make us more like Portland is just giving them another reason to be against it. I haven't been to Portland, and I don't really have any interest in going. I still think we need a transit system, though, and from a design and engineering standpoint there are some things in Portland that can be (and have been) used as precedent - I just don't like the Portland propaganda that's always being spread around. That could just be a personal preference, though. Sometimes I worry that there's going to be a move to rename Cincinnati to "New Portland."

The YMCA really is a shame, and according to the master plan Wilson is coming down as soon as they can afford to replace it with a new Arts & Sciences building. It's an amazing building but it's been left to slowly crumble, and with the new CCM complex there's no need for such a big auditorium. Here's a few inside looks at it: http://zfein.blogspot.com/2009/09/wilson-auditorium-revisited.html http://queencitydiscovery.blogspot.com/2009/10/gordon-bombay-and-auditorium-of-doom.html

ohny: chrysler building lobby
I had a view of this from my office window when I was working in New York. I miss it! Coming out of the office at dusk when the lights were just turned on is an amazing view. Not to hijack the thread, but here's a shot at dusk that made me stop and awe no matter how many hundred times I saw it... because Chrysler really is one the prettiest buildings in the world:

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
On an interesting note, I heard from Leslie Ghiz in person the other day. She recently came out against the streetcar project, but reiterated that she thinks it's a good idea, just doesn't agree with the timing. She wants to see it done, just not now. She stated that she believes the effect it will have locally will be stronger when the global economy is in better shape. She was loud and clear about one thing though; as much as she's against the streetcar going in any time soon, she was against issue 9. She said something along the lines of.. if you're against the streetcar vote for more people like (Ghiz) that won't let it get done. Don't go changing the way the entire government works. She was very clear about how dumb she thought issue 9 was, and I was glad to hear it! The streetcar is one of the only issues I find myself disagreeing with her on.

Cincinnati Bengals Discussion
From Chad Ocho Cinco's Twitter: "Beautify game, Ray knock my head off, all part of the game, I love my big brother Ray Lewis, hope you all enjoyed thee event !!!!!" He doesn't seem too bothered by the hit. Hell, Ray Lewis' inability to control his temper was one of the key plays in the winning drive.

I don't know how you do it, I kept my car even in New York City. I guess I'm dumber and worse than you, though.

University of Cincinnati Bearcats Football Discussion
Experience, nostalgia, call it what you want. Last season was UC's dream season, this season is the beginning of a journey. I think UC can establish themselves as a permanent Big East powerhouse, with the likes of WVU and Pittsburgh. And with the perpetually weakening Big 10, it would be interesting to see a rivalry born between UC and OSU.

Always, with the exception being right now/this year when they are ranked higher, will be ranked higher, and lose less games? Ohio State fans all love the past.

Cincinnati: Downtown: Queen City Square
Glass gets incredibly dirty while it's on a truck, siting on the site, and then being installed. Some of the dirtiest curtain walls I've seen were freshly installed. But I agree with nicker above, the client probably wanted to see part of the finished product so they cleaned it.

^ There is a lot to be said for finding a way to win all of your games. It counts for a lot in college football, no matter who you play. Anyways, the huge win against Rutgers (the preseason pick to win the BigEast) on the road to start things out propelled UC into the likes of the other preseason favorites (like Ohio State). Plus, the people ranking the teams have the job of watching and knowing the teams. UC's offense has been outstanding and is a big part of why they are ranked so high.. it looks like an offense that could compete with any defense any team could put out there.

Statewide: Issue 2 - Livestock Care Standards
Amending the state Constitution to expand government and allow it to micromanage agriculture in a manner that less efficient under, all under the guise of treating animals ethically sounds like an excellent idea to me.

^ The Know Theatre is great. I'm a really conservative guy and have gone there a number of times, even volunteered there a lot when they moved to their current location, and always enjoyed it. On a side note, George Zamary sits on the Knows Board of Directors and is running for city council. Very pro-Streetcar, lives downtown, and is very much so an urbanist who supports development in the core. I recommend that anyone watching the Gateway Quarter with approval consider voting for Zamary.

Photography/Photoshop tips and tricks?
The 17-40 f4.0L is a great alternative to the 18-55 if you're willing to spend a bit more. The image quality is simply amazing, I hardly ever take it off my camera.

Downtown Detroit in Danger of Demolition
I'm starting to work on a thesis involving something along these lines, if you're interested. I haven't selected a site yet but there are a few in Detroit I've looked at, some in indiana, although it will likely end up being in Cincinnati because that's where I am. There's nothing on my blog about it yet, but over the weekend/next week i will begin posting some early thesis research, if you're interested (http://zfein.blogspot.com is the site).

University of Cincinnati Bearcats Football Discussion
The Bearcats are scheduled to play Ohio State in 2012 and 2014, both at OSU, in exchange for $500,000 plus travel expenses. But I agree with Randy, an OSU loss in Cincinnati would be huge to them in terms of recruiting. For years high school kids would remember something like that. And ColDayMan, all we can hope for this year is an all-Ohio BCS bowl... if so you'll have to start building the Millennium Tower yourself. I still don't get the "it's too small" argument against Nippert. The visiting team still gets allotted a decent amount of tickets, and doesn't make a profit from sales anyways. What do they care how many fans the home team can stuff into their stadium?
-
University of Cincinnati Bearcats Football Discussion
^ I was at that game and didn't like the atmosphere compared to Nippert. What I'm saying is UC is good enough that they will be able to find quality opponents, and if OSU or anyone else refuses to play at Nippert because it's too small.. then UC can find better opponents. Although beating up on the perpetually overrated Buckeyes would make for a fun time.

University of Cincinnati Bearcats Football Discussion
Just saw the AP ranking. I think this is the highest Cincinnati has ranked in history. I'd imagine every game will (should) be a sellout now. Nippert is one of the best, most urban football stadiums in America. Go Bearcats! If only they played Ohio State this year...I'd bet money they would be the first FBS school in Ohio to beat OSU (then again, that OSU defense did just complete back-to-back shutouts against decent offenses). I guess we won't know until they meet again... If only Ohio State would man up and play UC at the Nip. With the way they've been playing the past few years, UC should be able to get some decent schools to play a home and away series, rather than getting paid to make trips to Oklahoma, OSU, etc. The Oklahoma game next year is at PBS, which for me almost ruins the home field effect. As nice as PBS is, Nippert is one of my all time favorite stadiums. It's the only one I've ever been to that fits perfectly into a community. It's sunken position also makes it loud.. despite holding half as many people as PBS I've heard it be just as loud.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
For any UC students reading this, you can drop by the DAAP building at 4:15 in room 5401 (the second floor auditorium) to register. Most UC students I've spoken to love the streetcar concept.
