  1. No one exploits the difference between budgets, and most people understand it. They just focus on the step that comes before the budget is made - the part where money is taken out of taxpayers paychecks.

I made a second blog posting about the buildings in the photos above, a bit of analysis, and a mention of the Vice article... http://zfein.blogspot.com/2009/08/detroit-ii-architecture.html
  3. How is deferring payment up to 5 years NOT taking money away from schools in the interim? You just added a qualifier, "in the interim," completely changing your original statement. Okay. How is deferring payment up to 5 years NOT taking money away from schools? They'll receive the money, just at a later date. It takes the money away in the interim, but not indefinitely was the point, I think. This is an example of prioritizing. Some council members, and a lot of citizens, feel that the police force should remain at its current size despite the budget problem. Protection of citizens is being prioritized over other things, rather than a clear cut across the board with no exceptions or priorities.

Red stars.. the stamp of the "elitists" of UrbanOhio.

Since we're in a thread talking about Google ads, the Google ads in this thread are ads for Google ads  They always relate to the words on that particular page, but I think the advertisers pick what words they want their ads to apply to. Are you in the restaurant thread talking about the new "Senate Pub" in Cincinnati? If so, there's your answer..

cats. yuck. I still don't understand how anyone can not absolutely love kittens. I saw a girl with a purse kitten the other day and just wanted to propose on the spot. Cutest combo I've ever seen.

I thought it was a bit overrated. It was a decent movie, I give it props for being original, but can't say it's one of my favorites, but I had some high expectations going into it and it didn't quite meet them.
  8. Craft beers and hot dogs? I can already say I will frequent this place, even if they use vinyl trim.
  9. http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20090827/NEWS0108/908270355/New+plan+to+save+police+jobs Council proposal: Defer payment to schools A group of councilmembers says the city can prevent 138 Cincinnati police layoffs this year by deferring a scheduled $2.5 million payment to Cincinnati Public Schools. "I cannot envision why this would not have broad support," said Councilman Chris Bortz, one of four councilmembers pushing the idea. "These jobs are critical. This buys us the time to delve into the budget, to get more information for 2010." ... (continued at http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20090827/NEWS0108/908270355/New+plan+to+save+police+jobs)
  10. ^ In New York the streets keep their names for address purposes, but have the "honorary" names after individuals or causes, etc. It can be somewhat confusing for people who don't know their way around. I just think some of the new names at the Banks are dumb. Renaming Vine St. even though it is continuous, for example. Especially because these are streets being put back.. a similar grid existed before Riverfront was built. I'd like to see the names restored rather than making up new ones.
  11. My experience with the small urban designs (in NYC) isn't all that great. They lead to a different shopping culture altogether - you go to the grocery every other day or so and buy what you want to eat that day and the next, rather than the weekly or bi-weekly mega trips you make when you take a car and can carry a bunch of bags with you. It's an interesting effect. I'm not opposed to it, I just prefer the larger stores as a personal preference. They work better with a busy schedule.

In their defense, it's entirely possible that many of them had more traditionally business-appropriate footwear at their offices. At least a few women I graduated law school with who went to NYC have good shoes at their office but don't risk exposing them to the elements (which includes the floor in some subway terminals). You said that other than the shoes, they were wearing dress clothes. It's entirely possible that by the time anyone other than fellow RTA riders saw them, their outfits matched. Wrong. No (ok the majority of ) fashionable woman or label Queen would leave good shoes in the office! You don't buy Manolo's or Louboutin's to leave at the office. Looking good is painful sometimes, but that's the price the ladies have to pay. I have some sentiment for the girls not wanting to wear heels to walk around the city/subway, but not enough to merit the tennis shoes with office formal wear, especially when 90% of the people you see during the day are during your commute. Sorry ladies, get some flats or tough it up. I don't want to have to look at gaudy tennis shoes.
  13. There is a long tradition of these t-shirts every year for the crosstown shootout. Although the girl in front of the electric mail vehicle is definitely an exception. Sherman, you focused on the wrong subject in that photo buddy.

^ My NYC apartment got a 97, but I think that goes without saying! My Cincinnati apartment got a 77, it's in area around the UC campus, which helps quite a bit.

In true fashion, a UofM fan retreats into the closet of Michigan fandom. Hey, if I was from Michigan I'd deny it too. Yes. You really nailed me there. How embarrassing. And even for reasons that will outcast me from Ohio, too:

I understand the difference between what they sell at the above stores and the stores on say...Madison Avenue. It's great if you can afford to pay top dollar, but how can a shirt--any shirt--unless it's made with gold thread and platinum buttons (can you imagine??)--be worth $600?!?! It's just not possible. Please explain. Yeah. The most I've paid for a shirt is $50, and I look damn good in it . Ironically, it was on Madison Ave.

The bargain hunting nature of Americans has led to some really interesting economics. But really, all that's happened is that everything is designed with efficiency in mind rather than aesthetic or functionality. It doesn't matter what the product looks like or woks like, so long as it can be made and distributed efficiently. People, of course, always have the choice of ignoring the products that follow these lines, and many do. This part is brought up a lot by the Walmart haters. Without Walmart, do we really think a lot of those people would have jobs elsewhere? Probably not. The world in which they would all be craftsman and build our furniture and make our clothes like their grandparents did is a fantasy world at best. The reason? The population is too high for the economics of 100 years ago to work today.

Hopefully they all have matching t-shirts, or else those boys aren't quite humiliated enough.

  21. The limited amount of public housing that should be provided should be simple and effective, but not luxurious or extravagant. Living in a neighborhood like Hyde Park is luxurious and extravagant. While centralization isn't successful, public housing should be built in places where it is economically efficient, especially because taxpayer dollars are being spent. You can house a family in any number of Cincinnati neighborhoods for a much lower price than you can in Hyde Park. I won't even mention how insulted I am at the reason for this proposal. The lawsuit is out of line and a waste of time, but retaliating with an even more absurd move is almost shocking. Step aside from the debate about public housing (there's another good thread on here about this topic) and ask just what in the world is going on here?!
  22. It's definitely possible, but I wouldn't say it's likely for this site. The Banks could make for a change in style for Kroger if they do indeed build a store there, since the parking will already be provided. That's why I think it'll be the first chance for an "urban" style store in Cincy (plus with the way this project has been going, we'll probably see that phase of The Banks before we see this completed). On a side note, what is the elevator situation like in those stores? It seems like that would be a bottleneck during busy times, with dozens of people trying to squeeze carts in and get to the parking levels. I know in stores in dense places people use smaller handcarts, or no carts at all and limit their purchases, but that seems like it'd be a huge change for people in Cincy to deal with!
  23. If this project happens, I would think Kroger would want to remain on that site, so there's a chance they would go for a more urban site. No way you're going to get them to reduce parking.. the lot they have now is almost always full and despite the semi-urban nature of the area, you're not going to get people who are willing to lug bags of groceries and cases of beer on 20 minute walks. I think the best chance for an urban store will be at the Banks, and I would guess it may end up being something like the new Kenwood store.
  24. My biggest critique is the purple line as well, following up on what was said here.. it only serves a few unique stops, and while it's nice to have a line that bypasses the Fountain Square station (and using the existing subway tunnels is a huge plus) it seems like it would have a relatively low ridership in comparison to the other lines. If it ever comes time to scale the proposal down some, you may want to reconsider that line. I like imagining the centerpiece that the Fountain Square Station would be...
