Cincinnati: Northside: Development and News
Northside has average street quality - they're better than downtown and OTR. Hyde Park is only marginally higher. Avondale has nicer streets than Hyde Park, and places like East Westwood are among the best in the city. Source: https://insights.cincinnati-oh.gov/stories/s/8suc-n8wr

Just a reminder that if you have a library card, you automatically have access to the Business Courier's subscriber content (along with all sorts of other great online resources - check out the resources listed on the library's home page if you haven't before). You can use this link, login with your card number and pin, and read the article: https://www-bizjournals-com.research.cincinnatilibrary.org/cincinnati/news/2019/08/07/exclusive-potential-developer-of-millennium-hotel.html Edit: I think you have to go here first, click the link, login, and then click the link above for it to work: https://www.cincinnatilibrary.org/resources/research.asp?group=5

Governor Mike DeWine
Your response here just raises the exact same question I asked. You assume black drivers in Cincinnati were stopped because they were black. That's quite an assumption, and one that I think many people mistakenly jump to. Why are you so certain that skin color is the root cause here?

Governor Mike DeWine
Are minor traffic laws really enforced disproportionately against the groups you have identified, or do the groups you have identified violate said nuisance laws disproportionately? If you have an honest answer to this question, one way or the other, I'd follow up and ask how can you possibly be so sure?

Cincinnati Reds Discussion
These Yinzers have been pelting batters for years, and last night in Cincinnati it finally came to head. Enter Amir Garrett: Also, as of today the Reds may have the best rotation in baseball. Hopefully that doesn't just translate to a lot of 1-0, 2-1, etc. losses.

Yeah, the entire concept of sorting all discussion by up/down votes is pretty bizarre. The only plausible result is groupthink and virtue signalling. Anything else, including anything resembling critical thinking or originality, is voted down and ultimately hidden from the discussion.

^ I've always been curious if the store was designed to accommodate a possible full second floor build-out. There are prep areas and the liquor store/bar up on the second floor around the perimeter, but those could have been on a mezzanine level or a single structural bay that popped up higher than the rest of the store. There had to be some reason to make the entire building 35+ feet tall. Maybe it's set up to be modified, with the Marketplace additions all on the second level?

Cincinnati: General Business & Economic News
When EBTH first started up, they were somewhat picky about what they would sell. They were more of a traditional estate sale auction house with a great website setup. They only sold tasteful estates. My wife and I have found some great Rockwood pottery pieces, some decent furniture (like a Knoll Barcelona Table), and some artwork. At first, they didn't have a physical presence and you actually had to go to the dead person's house, get your item, and load it up into your car. As they grew, they seemed to no longer filter the junk out. There are only so many estates out there that are worth auctioning off.

Cincinnati: Crime & Safety Discussion
I think that when an elected official, particularly a judge, exhibits corrupt and illegal behavior they should be given a stiff punishment. It's a significantly worse transgression than the average non-violent white-collar crime because the victims are the public at large. The average Joe who commits a first time, non-violent act like fraud may have victimized one or a few people. Ms. Hunter victimized the entire population of Hamilton County with her disservice.

Cincinnati: Downtown: The Banks
A Fox 19 reporter Tweeted this about the Banks shooting: Officers tell us a large group of people have been gathering along Freedom Way and Smale Park in the early morning hours. They meet through a social media app and choose a place to hang out. They have had more officers patrolling the area. Any idea what that's all about? Who is having parties in the street at 3:00 AM on a Sunday night? And how do I get invited?

Cincinnati: Crime & Safety Discussion
Chaos at the Courthouse: Chaos erupts as former judge Tracie Hunter dragged off to serve 6-month sentence https://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/crime/crime-and-courts/2019/07/18/judge-order-tracie-hunter-serve-6-month-jail-sentence/1716893001/ "This city is going to burn!" a supporter yelled at one point. Moments after Dinkelacker ordered Hunter to jail, a woman rushed along the courtroom wall, toward the table where Hunter sat. Two deputies restrained the woman and forced her to sit in a chair. As that was happening, Hunter stood and a female, African-American deputy approached Hunter. Hunter then allowed her body to go limp. The deputy, holding Hunter under her arms, then dragged Hunter – both feet dragging along the carpet – out of the courtroom.

Liberty Township: Liberty Center
Most of these places seem to go out of their way to not let you know where they originated. The same goes for the Thunderdome and Boca groups' restaurants. They want to be quasi local wherever they are.

Cincinnati: Northside: Development and News
I, too, have wondered what the average life expectancy of the crosswalk "paddles" is, city-wide. I live near the one on Ravine Street at Warner and it seems to last less than a week every single time it's replaced. It's a bit unnerving how often drivers hit a large, reflective, stationary object that's in a crosswalk, aligned with the double-yellow. We give out drivers' licenses way too easily.

I was just thinking that I don't remember hearing about murders so frequently in recent years. Homicides are actually down for the year but the month of June was terrible: June was the deadliest month in Cincinnati in at least 19 years https://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/crime/crime-and-courts/2019/06/28/june-has-been-deadliest-month-cincinnati-since-2010/1584618001/

Ohio Restaurant Reviews
I grow all sorts of hot peppers and bottle hot sauce in the fall when I harvest them. It's not a ton of work once you've done it a few times. It usually takes me 2 or 3 hours, including all the clean up and bottling. The tough part is getting used to the amount of capsaicin in the air! My wife always leaves the house on hot sauce day. I know some restaurants do make their own hot sauce - Washington Platform in Cincinnati, for example. I imagine a commercial kitchen can vent the fumes well enough that it isn't a problem. They probably just do a batch once a month or so.

I would bet that 9/10 people who pop their shirts off in a violent confrontation at Waffle House end up getting tased, whether they started the fight or not.

Cincinnati City Council
There is a pretty consistent niche on council for 1-2 black, religious, Republicans (Winburn, Smitherman, now Pastor). They're the only candidates that get votes from both little old ladies in Avondale and west side Republicans. Those are generally two demographics that vote consistently and don't pay a whole lot of attention to community activists outside of the church-going ones. Pastor's involvement with church donations was definitely a way to get him in front the former. The latter will vote for whoever is on the Republican ticket. Most of the other Republican candidates only get the latter, which isn't enough to get elected.

Clifton Avenue has been closed in the northbound direction between Vine and Klotter for the past week or so due to a landslide. It's closed today in both directions for cleanup:

Speaking of speakers, my house is wired throughout with these things: It would have been done in either the 70s or early 00s by the previous owner. I'm assuming that means they had 15+ speakers all throughout the house and yard. I redid the house almost entirely top to bottom, but kept these as an homage of sorts to the previous owner who had passed away.

Cincinnati: Before and After (non Over-the-Rhine)
Is is still going to be 13 stories tall? If so, I think you'll be able to just see the top to the left of the Hyatt. You can see the Reserve (SW corner of 4th and Race) to the left of the Hyatt now. The new 4th and Race will be in front of that, but a bit shorter.

In my opinion, the "fake meat" shouldn't be used in dishes where the taste and texture of meat is a significant factor. I use tofu and frozen fake hamburger crumbles in all sorts of meals, but I'm skeptical of using it in others. For example, I can sub the meatless grounds in for beef in bolognese or tacos without compromising the dish. Likewise I can sub tofu in for chicken in something like Thai curry. But if I want a burger, I'm just going to eat a burger. If I wanted to give up meat for any reason, I'd just not eat burgers.

Hipsters
Small world, I have been to that brewery. It's a little place in Taipei: https://www.google.com/maps/@25.0215536,121.5318973,3a,75y,206.48h,85.72t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sGYNiDPO7QgaSXcRggI1dAg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656 It's run by a bunch of white guys because hardly anyone in Taiwan drinks. Bars are few and far between, and when you do find one it's filled with Australians. There are some club type places the locals go, but they are bizarrely interrupted by the cops who turn the lights on, turn off the music, and go around and check everyone's ID once a night. It's really strange.

he residential street parking should be done away with. OTR streets are some of the most desirable parking spots in the metro area, and just like downtown streets they should pretty much all be metered spaces during normal metering hours. Residents could still use them to park if they wanted to, they'd just have to pay the market rate. It's decidedly anti-urban to provide heavily subsidized, dedicated street parking in what's supposed to be the most walkable neighborhood in town. Meanwhile, neighborhoods like Clifton and CUF get by just fine without such a system, and are arguably more complete and walkable than downtown/OTR.

Rookwood still has a shop (and a sizable parking lot) at their production building near Findlay Market. I always thought the other store was overkill because their showroom is interesting and has a much more unique feel to it - you walk by the raw materials, kilns, etc.
