I don't think anyone mistook Trump for "Salt of the Earth." The appeal he had is more along the lines of the cliche "who would I rather have a beer Diet Coke with?" It's an important factor particularly for presidential elections, and I'd argue that it always has been - since the founding of our great nation. It's contributed to some degree to the election of at least our last 3 presidents. Bush had it Gore didn't, Kerry didn't have enough; Obama had it, McCain and Romney didn't have enough; Trump has it, Hillary Clinton was - perhaps - the most lacking in this field of any presidential candidate in modern history. No one wants to have a beer with Mrs. Clinton. It's ultimately just about being personable. It also is mostly just a factor for presidential campaigns because the public has to listen to the candidates speak for months, even years on end. It never seems to have as much of an impact on smaller races.

This is like a mini version of Clinton's 33,000 emails. Cranley's 33,000 texts?
  3. So the City and the Reds axe their managers on the same day. I wonder if that's ever happened anywhere else before?
  4. Young completely embarrassed himself, and the city. The portion of his comment I found to be the dumbest was his statement that the events were a perfect storm and that there was no way the boy could have been saved. That's ridiculous - if the city had marginally better communication practices, computer/phone equipment, and oversight, and the boy would still be alive today. He was really downplaying the situation. IMO there is going to be an ongoing debate about eliminating the city's Emergency Communications Center and that was obviously on Young's mind. The seemingly growing consensus is that the city seems somewhat inept, and that this service should be handled by the county. The liberal end of council is going to oppose this, and try to keep it with the city so they can control it, keep union jobs, etc. even though that may lead to deadly errors like this one again in the future.

It's interesting that that event is getting more play outside of Cincinnati than in it. I saw video footage of Wendell going off on the parents of the kid and it seemed bizarrely cruel. I have no idea what he was thinking, but it seemed his thoughts were elsewhere. The articles I've read about it locally make it seem like it wasn't that bad, but the tone and attitude he had when speaking said a lot more than the words themselves. That was one of the strangest moments I've seen in council in awhile, and that's saying a lot.

I stood around for a bit and watched a tent go up on 3rd Street on Wednesday. A guy in an older F150 was unloading equipment, furniture, blankets, etc. and another guy was setting up his camp. I didn't see it start, but it looked like he had been driven there and dropped off. The truck had Kentucky plates. There are always homeless hanging around under the overpasses, especially after the Drop Inn relocated to Gest Street - but I don't remember ever seeing this many tents set up in the 7 years I've worked on 3rd Street.

^ Try not to get yourself into a Lorraine McFly situation.

I haven't seen a single yard sign or billboard yet, for anyone, here in Cincinnati. The only ads I've noticed were a handful of radio spots from Mary Taylor. Things have been pretty quiet here, I wouldn't expect a lot of turnout for either party's primary.

^ They were self made and independently famous long before that single, small payment from the Trump campaign. It's no surprise the Trump campaign would want to consult with two famous, powerful, successful, creative, black, female Trump supporters - the campaign should be thankful they charged such a fair and low price for their consulting! If they would have been a full on Trump campaign surrogate, they would have been paid a lot more than $600 each. That works out to pennies per hour.
  10. It just means the city owned it. Just like how Cincinnati owns a strip of land over 200 miles long from Ludlow, KY south to Chattanooga. Rail right of way? Yep. It's an interesting tidbit.

Imagine the outrage if your cell phone company muted you when you talked about certain topics, or refused to transmit text messages that contained certain vocabulary. Imagine if Google wouldn't deliver emails about certain topics, or if your ISP or any number of DNS owners along your route refused to deliver specific packets (the outrage over net neutrality was immense and that was only about prioritizing content!). I don't consider social media platforms to be any different, in principle. If they exist to provide a platform for communication (and they are gradually becoming one of the primary platforms for modern communication), they should treat all communication equally. Free speech is a human right, and when a handful of companies control the means of the bulk of modern communication, they have an obligation to humanity to help protect that right. Any company that doesn't should be shamed.

Trump didn't outperform the average successful Republican candidate among male voters, his victory margin within the demographic was on par with Bush, for example, and about half as large as Reagan and HW. Bush. Trump had similarly average margins among white voters. Facebook, memes, etc. weren't a significant cause, let alone the root cause, for Trump's victory. If they were, we'd see it in the results - more of the targeted demographic would have voted for him. The root cause, of course, was his opponent. Hillary Clinton is a wet blanket and wasn't capable of motivating her base.
  13. I don't think that's just a modern day function, I'd say it was one of the main reasons our legislative branch was designed the way it was.

I think the problem here is that there was a meeting scheduled for this discussion, and instead of attending that meeting, these 5 council members exchanged emails and texts, privately, and then issued a statement in their capacity as the council majority, without a public meeting. I think this is the law that applies here: - there are exceptions for executive sessions, but I don't think this would apply (section G 1 is close, though): http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/121.22
  15. I think the city risks having FC Cincinnati's stadium be a bookend to OTR's redevelopment. Aside from the couple dozen times its used each year, it will be a megablock that's not very pedestrian friendly, on the wrong side of a very wide, non-pedestrian friendly street. Virtually everything west of John Street is/will be affordable/public housing, and any attempt to build something there that isn't will be met with opposition from the community council and other special interests like the Homeless Coalition.
  16. Amanda Seitz wrote that... but I believe that's a mistake. I think that must be for structured parking. Amanda Seitz has since clarified that the money will go towards structured parking. At $20,000 spot that had better be structured parking. I know the City of Cincinnati doesn't always spend money wisely but even they couldn't manage to spend that much on a surface lot (I hope).

^ Well, if it helps, she was about as good at shooting as she was at making YouTube videos (talk about some bizarre videos), given that she was the only fatality. I consider this an unfortunate, but small price to pay in order to maintain a fundamental human right - the right to self defense. There's no need to punish other people because people like her exist.

  19. It looks like the Planning Department uses full census blocks when designating neighborhood boundaries, whereas the auditor doesn't. Does the auditor use the rear property line of properties on a certain street as the border, rather than the street itself? What do they use the "appraisal area" for, anyway? For comparable sales? Then, of course, there's the community councils definitions, which are sometimes wildly out of line with every other authority.

  22. Was this not posted already? https://www.dropbox.com/s/tgjcbn32elg16qh/West%20End%20Community%20Improvement%20Proposal%2003-26-2018.pdf?dl=0 It's the full list of demands that the West End Community Council made in exchange for their support the FC Cincinnati Stadium in the West End. If I didn't know any better I'd swear they were trolling.

The first weekend of spring in Cincinnati: Luckily the temperature is above freezing and the snow has started to melt already.
