^ It is a pretty eclectic street. I have good neighbors on either side of me, which is nice because we can basically reach out and shake each others hands from our decks. There's definitely a few oddballs around, too, though. Then there's some really nice people like the guy in that big brick house that maintains all those planters out on Clifton, which is no small task since he's got that little pickup truck with a water tank in it that he uses to water them in the summer. I notice there are a lot of single, empty-nester, baby boomers who seem to have lived on the street for decades. By a lot I mean almost every other house. The older people are all pretty neighborly for the most part, while the younger people tend not to be, especially the students.

^I'll have to pay attention more this winter, I usually shovel up to the top of the hill at the intersection, where the people with garages are always on top of shoveling their snow. Between the few of us we could probably get all the sidewalks done on the entire street.

If I get home late on a snowy night I like shoveling the entire block's sidewalks. I'm like the tooth fairy. I guess snow plows are too big to fit down the dead end portion of the street where I live, because it hardly ever gets plowed (sometimes a small pickup truck shows up and does it but not every time it snows). Me and a guy from across the street end up having to shovel the entire street because the incline is just a little bit too steep for most cars to get up.
  4. ^ Food stamps are used at Kroger all the time, I think we are perfectly on topic here. Most of these posts even mention "Kroger" at some point. I think Ohio does monthly payments, but on a staggered schedule over the first three weeks of each month. I notice the Kroger I'm at every week is much slower toward the end of the month. These urban stores must do a ton of business via EBT cards. More often than not I end up in line behind someone paying with it. While it's not as obvious as the old stamps were, it's still pretty noticeable because the shopper will split up orders and pay cash for booze or cigarettes or prepared food. Restricting what foods were eligible for EBT would probably have a huge impact on obesity. It's hard to get fat if you're limited to healthy ingredients. It doesn't take much longer, at all, to cook some rice and a chicken breast than a frozen pizza, especially if you factor in the cost savings, and no one is getting all that fat on the former. I imagine businesses and manufacturers would have problems with these restrictions though - they all make more money on the junk food, and their sales would plummet if they were no longer EBT eligible. It would be tough to write the actual laws though - granola is healthy, but what about a granola mix with all sorts of sugary garbage in it? I'd think the government would need to select certain categories that were eligible, and then put the onus of compliance on food producers.
  5. I think the problem with buildings like Mercer is that they are too large. There are some precedents around OTR for bigger buildings (like 13th and Walnut), but I don't think we should want much more of that. We're going to see another one on Elm and Liberty, possibly on Walnut and Liberty, etc. I'd much rather see 4 or 5 individual 4 unit buildings atop a retail space than something like another Mercer. The smaller buildings are much easier proportions for a designer to work with, and inherently look better. The big mega-block buildings are almost always ugly - and even the best ones are just "not bad."

^ Well be thankful for that - if they didn't auto-correct it for you, your message would be snagged up by the DEA via the NSA's database, and you'd end up on a list.

Heroine? I thought "hero" was a gender neutral term these days. Are you assuming the genders of our American heroes?
  8. I didn't realize the W train was back in service now. Years ago when they ended it, I bought a "W" train mousepad (I still use it, people think it's an M&M though) at the Transit Museum and then rode the very last train to the end of the line in Astoria, where I lived, and it turned into a little bit of a party of sorts.
  9. Half the time the fake accounts trolling on the Enquirer's comment section are more interesting than the Enquirer's content.
  10. Why don't they write articles about how many cars use some of the very expensive overpasses and roads we build? How many cars per day use the Monmouth Avenue overpass? What's the net gain on I-75 so far given the hundreds of millions invested there?
  11. What I like about the "ghetto" Krogers is that they sell the scratch and dent or almost expired goods on a back shelf for something like 50-90% off. This is something that never happens in nicer Krogers, let alone high end grocers, who just throw it away and take a full loss. Personally, if I can get a couple of steaks to throw on the grill that night for $2 a pound because they expire the next day and started to oxidize just a bit, I'm all in.
  12. The London games totally screw the home team, and specifically the tax payers who funded the stadiums the home teams play in. Hamilton County's contract with the Bengals permits them to play up to 2 "home" games per year in other stadiums - 25% of their homes games not in the stadium we paid for. Any of the alleged tax benefit that comes back to the city/county is lost during those games. Though I will say I like the 9 AM start time. You can watch the entire game and then still have a full Sunday left. I always feel like watching a game at 1PM ends up wasting my entire day.

^ GM just beat Tesla to the punch with the ordinary electric car: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/dec/14/gm-delivers-first-chevrolet-bolts-sparking-electric-car-price-race It will be interesting to see how this compares to Tesla's sub $40k car.

^ But he showed great leadership in the wake of that tragedy. Poor leadership wouldn't have resulted in such a high approval rating. If he would have acted apologetic like Obama, for example, and said something along the lines of 'Well, we don't know the motivation of these attackers...' he wouldn't have gotten anywhere close to 90% approval. He didn't, though, and his speech on 9/11 will likely go down in history as one of the greats: http://edition.cnn.com/2001/US/09/11/bush.speech.text/

Bush will be remembered in history books for being the president who achiever the highest approval rating of all time - 90% at one point in 2001. His dad was actually second place, at 89%.
  16. The contract shouldn't have allowed him to stay at OSU through the playoffs, but otherwise a good move by UC. It will be tough to turn the ship around in one year, but hopefully he has some secrets that can help UC upset Michigan in the big house come September.

Gold Toe makes some very comfortable mens dress socks.
  18. White Castle island is pretty amazing. That place used to always be extremely busy, even in the middle of the night, but it is now dead almost always. Maybe business will pick back up when construction is complete but it's kind of a surreal place now.
  19. You might be reading "fake news" when a headline states "Streetcar ridership numbers way short of projections" and then a paragraph into the article you find out that actually "Overall, ridership is 53 percent above expectations."

I agree it would be a waste, but I think it's what MLS is going to push for. If it becomes inevitable and people push for tax dollars, I think we should figure out a way to trick Butler County or someone else into paying for it. "Voice of America Stadium" has a nice ring to it.

Here's a quick and dirty copy paste of Crew's stadium laid overtop the location - the theater and adjacent buildings would have to go, you might be able to squeeze it in without removing the buildings on Wade but they would likely have to come down as well:
  22. Does someone have the rights to the name "Neon's?" If they moved to a new location - would they keep that name or would that confuse customers? Maybe they could go with "Argon's" or one of the other noble gases? Or "Halogen's" if they want to stick with the lighting concept.

I think the distance between Central and John Streets isn't big enough to accommodate a stadium. It is about 400 feet - for comparison sake, Columbus Crew's stadium is about 500 feet wide. You could close Central Avenue and John Street, but then the stadium would be butting up against the theater and Laurel Homes in a pretty odd way. I think it's more likely the theater would have to come down, Central Avenue would be chopped off, and the playing field would shift to the east of its current position.
  24. Yeah I know the guy who was robbed in the 2300 block of Stratford. He said the guy made him go to some weird credit union ATM in OTR or downtown and withdrawal $200, plus he happened to have $150 in his wallet. This guy is now up to 8 victims, and has spread out a bit from CUF: http://www.fox19.com/story/33841175/police-people-forced-to-drive-to-atms-at-gunpoint All victims described the suspect as well spoken and very calm, according to Detective Frank Palmisano. "The suspect takes money at gunpoint from the victims and then makes them drive him to the Postal Family Credit Union on 8th street. He makes the victims use their own cars. He then forces the victims to withdraw money from the ATM at the Postal Family Credit Union," Palmisano said in a statement. "The suspect then has the victims drop him off in the general area of Winchell and Wade Walk." Authorities describe the suspect as a black male in his twenties or thirties, weighing between 160 and 180 lbs. The suspect is known to wear a black hoodie with the hood pulled over, black pants, black shorts, knit gloves and a black mask, which could possible be a scarf.
  25. ^ Exactly, you can make a pot of chili and spaghetti big enough to feed 10 people for about $7 (or closer to $10 if you use lamb, or closer to $5 if it is veggie chili). I do it about once a month and then freeze it to eat for a few weeks. There's definitely some potential for this idea - it is a cool recipe to play around with.
