  2. That's a horribly written article, from the very first sentence. I wish they would had just provided a link to the police incident report in its entirety. I can't seem to find it posted online yet. The Enquirer mentions it's 3 pages long. Edit: It's posted here now: http://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/2015/07/23/uc-shooting-incident-report/30582067/
  3. This app does seem confusing and the laws are obviously vague. Personally, I'm just glad there are a handful of free spots in the urban basin that Cranley hasn't found out about yet.
  4. Some instructions! There has to be a better way then some sticker that can be vandalized / removed. And why aren't they replacing meters at The Banks (where pic of meter was taken) with the parking boxes? I signed up for a Passport Parking account via an email address. If you use a phone number, you may be sent up to 5 text messages each time you use the app. Not sure why you wouldn't just get said message via the app... As far as I know, refilling meters is still in direct violation of the Municipal Code. Is this going to become Cincinnati's version of outdated, unenforced laws - similar to the places where it's still illegal to eat ice cream on Sundays?
  5. There were some clips shown that were just cut short and only showed the worst 5-10 seconds. When the full video was shown on TV it was silent during the actual beating. There was a lot of taunting that was done by the crowd as the guy was being beaten, but it was not shown on TV. I assume it was because of the language, and rather than bleeping every other word they simply hit the mute button. What's interesting is that several of the people in the crowd were arrested seemingly just for the taunting. But I agree that this body camera footage of this could put Cincinnati in the national spotlight again. No matter what it shows, if released it will be national news. All the major national media outlets salivate at the mouth for any type of racial conflict.
  6. The car was moving because the driver (who appears to have been drunk at the time) was trying to flee the scene, after having originally stopped. The cop was unable to get out of the way and was apparently dragged by the car prior to shooting. The car continued on until it hit something, as it was in gear. I find it odd that people keep referring to the guy as unarmed. He was (drunkenly) piloting several thousand pounds of metal - something that's responsible for far more deaths in this country than guns are. The guy had dozens of traffic violations and a permanently suspended license, he was more dangerous behind the wheel than with a gun.
  7. Third time. 1997, 2011, 2015. Yeah, I forgot about the guy who died from the taser incident. Oddly enough, this driver might be alive today if the UC police were allowed to carry tasers, but part of the settlement when UC was sued over that death was that the UC police cease usage of them.

I didn't catch any lighting last night, but there was one hell of a cloud over northern Kentucky:
  9. I have seen street sweepers driving down the bike lane before. They're about the same exact width. The city also has smaller pickup trucks equipped with snow plows that could be used on the bike lanes if need be (these are the trucks that occasionally plow my street in the winter, if I'm lucky and report the unplowed street on the City Hall app enough times). The solution isn't to scrap the idea, but complete it. It's half assed right now, but it's still better than not having a bike lane. Spending money to remove it would be asinine, especially as that money could be put toward making some of the modifications Jake mentioned above. My biggest concern is that there are drivers out there who are oblivious enough to not only ignore street signs and giant pavement markings, but to slam into the back of parked cars. It’s one thing to be dumb enough that you park in the bike lane, but it’s another to crash into a stationary object because you were driving in a parking lane.
  10. A UC police officer had to shoot and kill a man at a traffic stop near the hill on Vine Street, after he attempted to pull away, dragging the officer with him. It is only the second time UC police have ever taken a life: http://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/2015/07/19/police-person-shot--mt-auburn/30391931/

Yeah, the storm was just south and west of downtown and never really hit the city itself. The view was amazing, though, and thunder literally shook my house a few times. In hindsight, I should have gotten my camera out.
  12. Anyone want to get together and ride bikes in a circle over them for a couple hours?
  13. I like that the stock photo that accompanies the article about "handsome" men is a rather effeminate looking guy, plastered in makeup and hair product.
  14. From the looks of it, there will either be no way to get from Moore/Back to McMicken or Lang, or there will be an awkward left turn from Moore to Walnut that crosses traffic coming up Moore. The fact that Walnut and Lang no longer line up is awkward as well. Some of the original drawings showed a smaller triangle section of park in place of the short stretch of Moore that seemingly would have made the whole area lay out better.
  15. That Back/Moore/Lang/Walnut/McMicken intersection is going to be really, really odd to navigate now. I'm guessing the short stretch of Moore will be converted to one way. Ideally, Walnut would be converted to two-way between Liberty and McMicken.

At least 95% of the fans in the stadium for all of the events had on Reds shirts/jerseys/hats. I was downtown during most of the events and could count the number of other jerseys I saw on my own two hands. I see more visiting fans during any weekend Cubs series. While the attendance was great, the attendance for the 3 home playoff games in 2012 was greater. There were estimates of 200,000 visitors from out of town and $60 million in revenue but I haven’t seen any details about that, and the only way we were anywhere close to 200,000 visitors from “out of town” is if they consider Covington, West Chester, and Colerain to be “out of town.” I don’t think anyone is claiming it was a failure, it was great for the region, but it was definitely built up more than it needed to be. Very few people outside of Cincinnati cared, but people from Cincinnati loved it. Only 10 million people watched the game on TV, and if you asked half of them right now where the game was they probably wouldn’t even remember. It’s just the nature of events like these, nothing that’s the fault of Cincinnati.

These are the type of people who think Gatlinburg and Myrtle Beach are the greatest places on Earth. They just don't enjoy cities - or their idea of a city is limited to a couple trips to the Magnificent Mile in Chicago, or maybe Midtown Manhattan. There's nothing to do here (for them) because the idea of paying to park downtown is absurd, and they still think they'll be killed if they set foot in places like OTR, Northside, and Clifton. Their numbers are shrinking though. I don't know that the ASG changed many of their minds, but hopefully it changed a few.

The rollback is a de facto increase in tax, so far as the bulk of Cincinnati's property owners are concerned (and the local media paints it). Cranley doesn't want to be responsible for trying to "raise" property taxes without the public getting to vote on it. He picked parks because it's probably the easiest thing to sell. In my opinion, the primary benefit Cranley is after isn't more funding for the Parks Department, but the freeing up of some city money that is spent on parks today. This levy will generate $5.2 million per year. The current city funding for parks for FY 2016 is $2.3 million for the capital fund and $16.5 million operating budget. I'm guessing that the city would likely not pay for any more capital expenses if this is passed, so Cranley gets that $2.3 million to play with (plus another $2.9 in operating budget).

Yeah, we had 7.33 inches of rain in June, about 3 inches more than average. For July we are up to 2.94 inches already (not counting today - 1 to 2 inches is expected today). The average for July is just over 4 inches. On a related note, my small garden is already filled with more tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers than I can possibly eat. I've never seen plants get this big so early in the summer.

Yeah, this is what is slowly heading toward the city. Maybe it can get started once the storms pass, but it's going to be grossly muggy all afternoon once the main storm clears out.
  21. Yup, the other issue is where are all these shoppers coming from? The stores are basically the same as other malls and I can't imagine there's that much increasing demand for retail, so are they basically just cannibalizing other retail properties? Yes. I have worked on projects in other cities that are basically the same exact thing as this development, and almost always the anchor tenants, and many of the smaller tenants, simply relocate from one dying location to the new site. The tenants spend a little bit of capital on new stores, and see increased sales for several years compared to what they might make in any number of nearby dying malls.
  22. Areas that aren't even in Hamilton County also get the "Cincinnati" mailing address. All of the businesses near the Fields Ertel exit on I-71 use "Cincinnati." That's the farthest area away from Cincinnati that I can think of.

It's MLB Network's decision. And they are from Cincinnati. Shut Up and Dance sits at #5 on the chart. Yep. I'd go with the Isley Brothers myself. There's an argument that basically anything on the Billboard Top 40 is vanilla. It's far from the best, it's just the most palpable to a broad, uninformed audience. To make a comparison to food, no one would say Subway, McDonald's, and Taco Bell are the best things out there. They're just ubiquitous, cheap, and most people can stand them. An informed person might have a favorite chef and will appreciate both complex flavors, and pure, simple ingredients. Staying on topic (both in terms of this thread and ubiquitous and cheap things), it looks like someone named Demi Lovato is taking over the ASG free concert, as America and donut hating Ariana Grande has cancelled. I'm starting to feel old because I have no idea who she is, but I admit to only knowing who Ariana Grande is because she's physically attractive.

More people watch NFL playoff games than the MLB All Star Game; in fact it's about 3 times as many people. If anything, the Bengals home playoff game was a more high profile event. I get that it's an exciting event for those of us living in the city, but it doesn't really put Cincinnati in the national spotlight as much as the Enquirer, and the city at large, seems to think.
