  1. "We have to keep up with jobs that are growing in the suburbs and the workforce that has to leave the city to get to those jobs," said Dunn. Shouldn't the suburbs be paying for that? Hopefully the tax levy is county wide. If SORTA asks city residents to subsidize buses to the suburbs, they will run into more opposition than they need. Of course, asking suburban county residents to pay more taxes for better bus service is almost a lost cause, as the local media will inevitably paint it as a streetcar tax no matter what SORTA says. With some good marketing a county wide tax could have a chance, though. All it would take is illustrating exactly what new service would be paid for. A lot has changed since 2002, I wonder if enough has changed that county residents are willing to pay more for better transit?
  2. Williams has one of the worst writing styles of anyone in Cincinnati media; it's a textbook example of yellow journalism, which unfortunately is exactly what the Enquirer wants. His article makes it seem like all hell is going to break loose in downtown Cincinnati, despite the fact that there is already a plan and it will be announced tomorrow morning. Even the headline "Where's the ASG traffic, parking plan?" can easily be answered - on the desks of city officials until they announce it tomorrow. If I still gave this particular author the benefit of the doubt I'd assume he started writing the article thinking there was no plan at all, and then later found out there was a plan in place, but didn't bother to change anything. Unfortunately I know that's not the case. That's aside from your point that it's really not that big of a deal. If you can't figure out how to avoid traffic and find a place to park, you probably shouldn't be behind the wheel of a vehicle anyways.
  3. Originally the concerts were cancelled for the rest of the year, but this weekend’s (July 11) concert was still scheduled. As of this afternoon, that too has been cancelled. There must have been a huge backlash from local businesses and sponsors.
  4. You get those at just about every bar. Yeah, we don't know what led up to this, but he certainly didn't get out of there when he had the chance. Instead he strutted around and asked for more, which makes me suspect that he started the whole thing. I’m surprised to see so much victim blaming here. If you beat someone’s face into a bloody pulp, you’re the problem, no matter how much shit the other guy was talking. If you stand around and cheer it on, you’re part of the problem as well. If you stand around and record it, you’re either an idiot or smart enough to know that’s the best way to bring attention to it later. My point still stands, though. This event seems to attract a much more violent crowd than any of the other public events the city and 3CDC host on Fountain Square. They should reconsider hosting it in the future. Canceling it would obviously draw protests and create more strife, but they could simply not schedule it next year, or replace it with a similar, more peaceful genre (if they want to keep the events politically correct), and schedule it at 11:00 AM. The reality of the situation is that the bars, hotels, and restaurants around Fountain Square will take a hit in business on what should be the busiest night of the week because of this event.
  5. The Saturday night hip hop concerts on Fountain Square routinely result in violence. This isn't the first time this year the event has required police intervention. I'm going to state the obvious - you don't get a lot of assaults, attacks on officers, etc. during the Indie, Salsa, or Folk nights.
  6. If you look at the county auditor's birds eye images, you'll see that the Che courtyard is completely fenced in, and surrounded on 3 sides by a communal outdoor space that is shared by the adjacent subsidized housing. It's definitely an odd location, but not all that different than the courtyard at the old Mayberry (now Goodfellas) space.
  7. Chicago style pizza is so gross.
  8. If someone other than Vandercar gets a hold of it, it's possible. The other factories that occupied the site could have been re-purposed rather easily - I was in a few of them prior to demolition and the office portions that fronted each building (along the rail line, where the apartments are now) were three story spaces with plentiful daylight and large floor slabs - pretty ideal for reuse as office. I don't even think it was considered by the developer.
  9. I like that his Twitter handle is @OhioRAG. His middle initial must be "A" but the term "Rag" sure does sum up his new employer.
  10. “The city authorizes SORTA to subcontract any of its rights, duties or obligations under this agreement to a third party contract or contractors,” the agreement said. It doesn't seem like they have much of a case, unless their suit is referencing some other document aside from what it claims to be referencing.

That last sentence sums up the biggest difference! The average first time co-op pay is probably about double that now, but at $11,000 a year for in-state tuition, the cost of going to school is 5 times that amount.
  12. Current capacity is 13,176. Page 11 of the linked PDF states 10818 will be the new capacity. 2358 fewer seats.

Good points all around. I agree that there are obviously people who still have it out for Pete. He just recently started with Fox Sports as an analyst, and will have a role in the upcoming All Star Game – he was just starting to get sympathy from MLB and the general public. Someone chose to leak these pages, and someone picked the time to do so. I highly doubt it was a coincidence.
  14. My understanding is that they will be union workers either way. The cost difference is due to pensions if the employees are hired directly, rather than through a private contractor, where they would presumably have a 401k instead, like the rest of us non-government employees.

I considered writing something obnoxious on my roof as a prank for people using google earth. Before they switched the browser version of satellite imagery over to Google Earth, I could be found in my back yard weeding my garden. I also got caught by the Streetview cars last summer when Cincinnati imagery was updated - I've found myself in 5 places, so far. I try to actively avoid having my picture taken most of the time, but Google has had their way with me.
  16. God I really hope they don't get rid of that building (on the corner of broadway and 4th). it's so unique and interesting; definitely one of my favorite downtown. Didn't someone on this thread or another mention the idea of building on top of the existing structure? I honestly like all of the W&S buildings along 4th st. I cut through the alley between them and the Residence inn to go north after work and the parking lot on the south side of 5th street is more than large enough to place a good sized building on. I believe there was either a thesis or a studio at UC years ago that proposed a Hearst Tower style addition to the existing W&S building (basically using the existing historic structure as a base, and setting a glass box atop it). That would be spectacular, in my opinion.
  17. Is that really relevant? I really hope the FOP doesn't politicize this to try to get even more police hired. This man was going to do this regardless of who the officer was who responded. If you're going to do suicide by cop, why would try to kill the officer? It's not relevant, at all, especially considering many new police officers have been hired since Cranley took office and money was specifically set aside for overtime to increase police visibility (it wasn't a matter of not enough police officers, it was funding to allow the officers we do have to be on patrol as much as they want). The FOP (and our local media) should apologize for politicizing a tragedy just hours after it occurred. It didn't take long for drivel like this to appear:
  18. Washington Park was just under $50 million, and it is about 5 times as large as Ziegler. $27 million is a substantial amount of money for a park as small as Ziegler is.
  19. Yep - Photo Provided by City of Cincinnati Was part of Cranley's budget to save on city bandwidth usage by compressing jpeg images to 1990's levels?

You can get the book “Stepping Out in Cincinnati” as a free e-book from the library. That would be the place to look when it comes to theaters. I just read it on an airplane a month ago and I don’t remember seeing anything about Garfield Tower, but I’m always half asleep on planes so that doesn’t mean it wasn’t in there.

The arms on the replacement Jesus are very similar in position. The proposed route is so circuitous that it would actually allow people to bypass Solid Rock Church.

Well, at least their slogan at the bottom of the page makes some sense, with just a minor adjustment: Edit: Is that the Solid Rock Church Touchdown Jesus in the logo? Is this page a parody?
  23. I saw that there was a permit pulled for the address for a “pharmacy trailer.” I first thought it was some type of misprint, and that it was just a construction trailer that would be on-site while the new pharmacy was being built. However, your security guard has confirmed my initial understanding - Walgreens will operate out of a trailer, much like the classrooms at UC’s nearby Wilson Auditorium replacement. I wonder if he meant the Kroger itself will be two stories, or if other buildings on site will be. One of the site plans from years ago did have a couple two story outbuildings along Corry Street. However, I have also heard from Kroger workers that they will stay open during construction – so the site plan has to have changed (or they’re being lied to).
  24. yes I feel like I'm the only person who finds it awful. It's the architectural equivalent of a face tattoo.
  25. I was on my way to the airport the other day at the early hour of 4:00 AM and noticed the Central Parkway bike lanes being cleaned. There was a street sweeper wedged between the curb and bollards cleaning away debris.
