  1. The building that's still attached to the bottom of that smokestack would make for a great craft brewery. It's a little off the beaten path, and would be very expensive to fix, but it has some great spaces.
  2. At 4 days out the weather this year still seems to be a complete mystery, with the latest forecast showing 54 degrees on Tuesday, but with enough rain and snow melt to potentially trigger flooding, followed by 3-5 inches of snow on Wednesday, and a low of -4 on Thursday. Friday is forecast to be clear and cold, with a low of 13.

"Around 1:17 a.m., Varma allegedly hit an Uber driver and struck the vehicle's windshield in the 1200 block of Main Street -- a block that is home to OTR's Park + Vine and Macaroon Bar." Probably had a few too many Macaroons and Kombuchas, no doubt.

I would say it's an even bigger change than the Brown's: I have no doubts the logic behind this is that Great American Insurance came to the realization that 90% of people probably just thought GABP was a really patriotic name for a ballpark, and had no clue Great American Insurance existed. Changing the color is just an excuse.
  5. This is the website for the building, it has been around for awhile now but only as a concept. I'm glad it's starting to come to fruition. The plans show it utilizing the cellars, hopefully they can pull it off. http://koolcellar.com/floor-plans-and-sections/
  6. The timing of stoplights has a lot to do with this, I think. Taft is the prime example; when the light from the 71 exit ramp turns green, everyone knows they have to drive like they’re at a drag strip in order to make the rest of the green lights all the way through to Auburn Ave. I would not want to be on a bike anywhere near Taft when that stop light turns green.
  7. The west block really confused me as well. In addition to your observations, it also excludes the area around 4th and plum that is ripe for redevelopment; Mainstay and Tina's are a couple bars in that area already and there are plenty of vacant storefronts. It's also odd the district stretches all the way over to I-75, aside from the Section 8 housing and church, there's a severely underutilized park. If the Brent Spence is ever built, the spaghetti onramps in this area will supposedly be packed tighter together and free up real estate.
  8. I agree. Both the Law Building and the GeoPhys building were designed by the same architect, and I think they both have some very nice interior spaces.
  9. What it would be perfect for is a data center. CyrusOne has a massive downtown data center already, and there are a few other floors in office buildings around town that have small data storage facilities. Having no windows in your data center is a benefit, whereas it's a negative for almost all other uses.
  10. MLK will be nothing more than a highway linking I-75 with I-71. Unfortunately, that is the only vision Uptown leaders have for the area. All the more reason to seize this moment for Taft and McMillan to be converted to two way east of Vine. Choose your battles right? Let MLK be fast moving and auto oriented. As it is Taft is like a motor speedway where it feels unsafe to be a pedestrian, but it is the one that could easily be a neighborhood street. Uptown needs to do this if you are ever going to sew the neighborhoods of Corryville, Clifton Heights, Mt. Auburn, and Walnut Hills back together again. I agree, once MLK is complete Taft and Mcmillan need to be converted to two way streets, preferably with bike lanes. As it stands now, biking from Walnut Hills to UC can be tricky at times due to the speed of traffic on Taft - I usually take a goofy route throough side streets to avoid having to bike on Taft. As for west of Vine, the density is great there and traffic is slow due to a combination of factors, so I think the one way streets are needed.
  11. It shows up in some of the old street improvement photos: https://drc.libraries.uc.edu/handle/2374.UC/720512 (edit - the linked photo above shows the exact condition jjakucyk just pointed out in the post above) https://drc.libraries.uc.edu/handle/2374.UC/717383 https://drc.libraries.uc.edu/handle/2374.UC/717380
  12. I hope one of the value airlines pick up some of the direct flights Delta is abandoning. A lot of business travel depends upon direct flight options. I utilized Delta's direct flight to Jacksonville a lot last year, and now that it's been dropped I would consider using Allegient's if they could offer it more than once a week. Business travelers won't shy away from value airlines if they are the only ones offering direct flights.

I think you might be looking at C not F. Though there are records being set all up and down the eastern half of the country. I have a construction project in Florida and it's chaos right now because it's in the 20s and no one wants to go outside there.
  14. Some of these tax incentives are getting to be a bit much, in my opinion, especially for a conglomerate like Uptown Rentals. Many smaller, independent landlords will get dinged with thousands in additional taxes for fixing up old bathrooms and kitchens, while Uptown gets to save $8,000,000 by tearing down historic buildings and putting up cheap EIFS clad superblocks.

Wind or sunlight can really affect how temperatures feel when you start getting into subzeros. -5 on a calm, bright, sunny day doesn't seem so bad, but at night or on a cloudy, windy day it is very cold. Snow can make it feel warmer too, if it's reflecting sunlight back up toward you.

Did you do rigid insulation in the walls and under the floor? My house had zero insulation whatsoever when I bought it. I had insulation blown in the attic last summer and it made a dramatic difference. The energy efficiency graph that Duke Energy sends you quarterly shows a pretty dramatic difference. I used fiberglass batts in the existing stud (original, circa 1880 non-standard sized stud) cavities in the lower floor. The upper floors have some R-13 in places, though not everywhere, and there’s R7.5 rigid behind the siding on the exterior. The problem was the lowest floor can be anywhere from 10-20 degrees cooler than the middle floor on a sunny day because the south wall is basically all glass on the middle floor, and that’s the floor that has the thermostat. There appears to be blown insulation under the floor, but without doing too much exploratory demo I have no way of knowing how complete it is. I think they just did it around the edges.

Though I was wearing shorts just a week and a half ago, the low tonight in Cincinnati is -11, and tomorrow the low is -14 (both of which will be records). I have been renovating my house and added R-19 insulation throughout the ground floor, which was previously sparsely insulated by R7.5 foam in some places, which allowed for all sorts of cold drafts. I just finished up this past weekend and got everything drywalled over. I guess I was just in time.
  18. The problem with tailgating is that UC is unlike any other stadium in college football in that it’s so intertwined with the campus that there’s no surface parking anywhere near it. Tailgaters are spread out thin, with some as far away as the hospital parking lots. Closing Short Vine and allowing tailgaters there would work well, though. I agree that there would be a huge surge of fans if UC gets into the Big 12. If UC had a big win at home against an Oklahoma or Texas I don’t think you’d see an empty seat at Nippert for a while aside from those first few rows maybe. Those seats are a problem – one of my favorite things about Nippert is that the stands literally open up onto the field at every aisle, but the side effect is that means fans in the first row are sitting behind players and can’t see over them. I wonder how many visiting team fans get tricked into buying those seats thinking they got an amazing deal on a first row 50 yard line seat, only to discover their view is of the back side of a water cooler.

If one was being investigated for a crime, it’d be very easy for police to subpoena Kroger’s records and have a list of everything you’ve ever bought from them. Credit card data is the first thing most investigations go for, but that’s limited to X dollars were spent at Y location. You bought rope 3 years ago, trash bags last week, and some bleach and sponges? Clearly you killed someone and cleaned up the evidence. Whether it’s the government using it against you, or a private company building a database on you in order to directly market to you, it’s not an ideal situation for an individual. This all reminds me, has anyone watched the series Black Mirror? It’s on Netflix. It takes what seem like absurd paranoid delusions about technology, the future, government, marketing, etc. and makes them seem very plausible. Skip the first episode if you do watch the series.

That's the real reason most places go to the trouble of offering free wifi. Look up how Nordstrom uses the data - anything you can find online has usually already been surpassed by even more tracking and analysis. They not only track how long and how often people visit their stores, but where they go within the store, how much time they spend in each department, etc. Free Aps are the other big piece of technology that companies use to make you the product. Even if you don't connect to wireless, so long as your phone is actively searching for wireless (if you can go to your wifi settings and see a list of networks, it is) it is traceable anywhere wifi is offered. I'm sure teams love having data on tens of thousands of people.
  21. Looking at that street on streetview I don't see how widening it can be done without demolition. Also, I don't think its THAT heavily used a street, its going to kill the pedestrian friendliness of this area too. I have a feeling this would literally only be where Auburn and McMillan meet, allowing for more lanes of travel to allow for higher capacity at that intersection but not a widening of the full length of the street. Hopefully. Squeezing in a right turn lane would be possible without demolition, and allow traffic to get from Auburn to McMillan and off towards the highway. As it stands now, traffic backs up because right on red is limited by sharing a lane with traffic continuing straight, and left during parking hours. Of course most of the lanes in that area are narrower than standard, so I could see the thing exploding into a much larger project in order to accommodate wider lanes.
  22. They were very much so under capacity at Paul Brown. They should never, ever play games there again, even if it means the big schools won't come to town (Oklahoma a few years ago wouldn't play at Nippert, neither would Ohio State). Though if UC gets picked up by the Big 12 as has been rumored, Oklahoma, Texas, etc. wouldn't have a choice. At Nippert they sell out big games, and games during nice weather. Against teams like Tulane, Temple, SMU, etc. they are a few thousand under capacity, despite the fact that they win nearly every home game they play. I think next year many of the games will sell out because of the new stadium, especially if UC does well again. If UC ends up in the Big 12 I think sellouts will become routine.

I can't believe how blatantly corrupt this proposal is. Luckily it has been getting a decent amount of bad press, hopefully they have trouble getting signatures. Something tells me there will be enough people that just want weed that they'll get enough, though. Even the name of the group is misleading - there's another amendment being prepped for 2016 by "Responsible Ohioans" that is simple and transparent: http://responsibleohioans.org/amendment/proposal/ Meanwhile "ResponsibleOhio" has a behemoth of an amendment that is beyond ridiculous in terms of micromanagement: http://responsibleohio.com/responsible-ohio-amendment-language/
  24. Maybe the mean 142 rides per day by 75-100 riders, with most making at least two rides. I agree that I don't see this in use much by UC, even when the weather was nicer. I'm curious to see if they catch on this spring, but I think most people are deterred by the hills. There's no discount for students is there?
  25. These apartments are $2100 a month, though. I understand wanting to pay $1000 or even up to $1200 or so rather than buy the house next door for an $800 month mortgage payment, but for $2100 you could have the house and $1300 a month to fix all the outdated crap. Unless there's a good chance someone won't be living in town for at least 5 years, there's a point where luxury rentals become a poor financial decision, in my opinion.
