  1. Do we think the city will really appeal with Cranley at the helm? Or is it more likely he just says "I told you so" and blames more things on the streetcar? It's a tough call, who knows if his ego will win out and he will just this to make a point, or if he wants to get his little hands on that $15 million badly enough to use on his own projects.
  2. I’m not so sure it would, at least not in the long term, because a big factor in how much people drive is where they chose to live. It wouldn’t be a wise choice to move 20 minutes further from work because gas dips below $2.00, as there’s no reason to believe prices will last for a substantial amount of time. There could be some short term increases in trips other than commutes, though. Overall I don't think anyone is moving or buying a car based on gas prices, no matter how low they go. For an anecdote, I live a 15 minute bike ride from work and even though I wimp out and drive when the weather isn’t nice, I get gas less than once a month. Saving $1 per gallon saves me about $10 per month, and isn’t going to change any of my habits. It may make me more likely to choose a road trip over a flight, though.
  3. 200 square feet is very tiny, and akin to the small homes people build on trailers. I wonder if that's what these homes will be. One of the problems with tiny homes is code compliance. There are minimum sizes dictated for things like bathrooms and bedrooms by the International Residential Code, and building a mobile home on a trailer is how people skirt those regulations. The $89,000 seems expensive, even if land is included. That is $445 per square foot – over 4 times what new home construction costs on average in Cincinnati. Maybe it’s a $60,000 plot of land? For a personal anecdote, I’ve always wanted to construct a small two bedroom home in the urban basin somewhere, but by small I’d want around 1000 square feet on two stories. 500 would be reasonable for one person, and similar to a smaller studio apartment.
  4. Um, what about the Steelers? Denver is better than KC (not by a lot), but that's just one game. They have us twice, we have them twice. They have the Falcons, we have the Browns. Their road is obviously harder. The Bengals have to play the Browns in Cleveland, after getting spanked in Cincinnati. The schedules are about a toss-up between you two. It was just flexed to Fox and finalized for 1:00, so the Browns have no chance in that game. may have an equally tough schedule given that the Bengals are playing better than them this year, even if the Bengals other opponents are both more challenging. I think 2-2 is the worst the Bengals will go, and I don't see anyone else going 4-0 down the stretch.
  5. At this point, the Bengals get a playoff spot no matter what if they go 3-1 through the next 4 games. Even if the Bengals go 2-2, they get a playoff spot unless someone else in the AFC North does a perfect 4-0. The Bengals have the toughest schedule remaining of all the AFC North teams, though.
  6. It seems like he can't cope with a mistake. Just like in the Brown's game, he came out of the gate and immediately messed up and then never recovered. When he gets off to a good start, he can ride the momentum through the game, but when he gets off to a bad start he just keeps going downhill.
  7. What I find interesting is that the Wade's see enough demand to provide a huge amount of commercial space this far north in OTR, in a brand new building with structured parking, yet the owners of the Davis Furniture building on Main Street say renovation isn't economically viable. A new building like this one proposed at the Grammer's site is going to cost a lot more per square foot to build out.
  8. The perspective drawings are awkward, there are some scale and vanishing point issues causing that. I think showing the building from unrealistic angles isn't helping the case either. Until there's something more solid I'd put these drawings into the same category of those initial Banks renderings. Who knows what we'll actually end up with.

What Was Said at the Uber Dinner http://www.huffingtonpost.com/nicole-campbell/what-was-said-at-the-uber_b_6198250.html If you believe this, it seems this whole story was completely overblown.
  10. You should send that in to whoever is supposedly developing the hotel on the Purple People Bridge.

7 feet of snow is probably loading around 100 pounds per square foot of extra weight onto all those roofs. Without doing a code study, that's probably well over the roof snow load requirements even for Buffalo. As that starts to melt and shift on sloping roofs, there's going to be a lot of unbalanced point loads, too.
  12. ^ Email spoofing is actually incredibly easy to do and happens all the time. My question is who would go to the trouble to spoof 3CDC for the sake of a homeless agenda??? I can think of maybe two people off the top of my head.
  13. Hipsters have almost left OTR entirely at this point, it is full on yuppie, with a handful of exceptions. Which is why this instance of glass block is that much worse, it isn't even ironic, it's just theater.

http://www.fox19.com/story/27431896/city-council-approves-co-naming-of-downtown-third-street The whole article mis-spells "Lindner" as "Linder". 13 times it's written at "Linder". 0 times it's written as "Lindner". It looks like they have since corrected 12 of them, though there's still 1 "Linder" floating around in the image caption.
  15. ESPN's "Playoff Machine" is up and running. I quickly punched in this without much putting much thought into games outside of the AFC North. I think Cincy and Baltimore can each get to 11 wins, with Cincy edging them out thanks to the tie. The funny thing will be the NFC South potentially putting forth a losing team while plenty of 9-7 teams stay home, a fairly likely scenario at this point.

Bill to up the allowable ABV of beer to 21% in Ohio not likely any time soon. It’s a shame that this has been held up for over a year now. There are a handful of beers that I have to travel over to the great state of Kentucky to get. The bill seems to have bipartisan support, but isn’t a priority for anyone.

^ I think it goes without saying that if you're into something shady, take a cab, tip well, and turn off your cell phone.

The post Chiquita cover-up was mind boggling. The Enquirer ran away tail between legs so quickly that everyone forgets that everything they exposed was true, albeit not that big of a surprise to anyone. That story was just a little bit too soon for the internet to pick up on it and make it blow up. If it would have been a few years later, social media would have gobbled it up and even a special prosecutor wouldn’t have been able to brush it under the rug. Since we’re renaming all sorts of roads all over the Banks for little to no reason, someone should propose naming an alley somewhere after that reporter.
  19. Somehow the Tracie Hunter saga is still ongoing, despite her being found guilty and 2 weeks left until her sentencing - and the Enquirer seems to be loving every minute of it. The latest news, aside from Tracie's lawyer convincing three jurors to try to undo their verdict, is that another juror may have been sexually abused as a child and shouldn't have been allowed to serve: http://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/courts/2014/11/17/tracie-hunter-forewoman-lied-i-want-new-trial/19176067/ I wonder how many private investigators it took to find that out?

There's nothing wrong with trying to rebuff your critics, even with "dirty" tactics, because it happens all the time; where they messed up is bragging about it. I think that is what's more telling about their leadership - they can't serve their revenge quietly and subtly, they have to take credit for it. Who you should really fear are the people who do the same, but do it quietly - though they typically get into politics, not business.

Thanks for the link and info. Using 1984-2014 for Cincy, the average is 22.9 inches annually. I'm not sure how the link above arrived at 11 inches, from what I can see there have only been 3 times in the last 30 years that Cincy has had under 11" snow. Oddly enough, the most (47.5") was last winter, and the least was 2012 (5.6"). The all-time average for Cincy is 21.5" annually, so there's a bit of a trend up here as well.

I think Cincinnati is in a horrible spot in terms of the amount of snow we get annually. The website you linked shows about half of what Wikipedia shows for Cincy’s average (maybe it’s the years they used). The average, according to Wikipedia, is 22 inches which seems more accurate than 11. Either way, the problem is that Cincy doesn’t get enough snow to invest too heavily in snow removal, so there’s always a huge lag between when roads are cleared. Coupled with the fact that you can’t really get anywhere without multiple climbs/descents of several hundred feet of topography makes things a mess. Between having a RWD car and the fact that the city closes the hills to buses when the weather gets bad, walking is my only option some days.

Christmas beers are getting very popular, and are some of my favorite. If you like Mad Elf, give N'Ice Chouffe a try if you can find it. It's tough to drink very many of these types of beer, but I guess at 10% + you're not really supposed to. Though you can still tell yourself you're not binge drinking because you only had 4 beers.
  24. Luckily the Saints didn't play defense anywhere near as good as that guy, and the Bengals are back on top of the AFC North for at least a day.

Cincinnati is awful at clearing snow, but it usually helps that it melts pretty quickly. Last year was the first winter in awhile where we had multiple weeks with below freezing temperatures, and multiple snowfalls. I live on a narrow, dead end, steeply sloping street and the only way the snow gets cleared is when a neighbor and myself get out there with shovels and clear some tire tracks out. I just take the bus instead of trying to get my rear wheel drive shitbox to move, but my girlfriend has to get out to a suburban office so I end up having to dig her out of the snow anyway. The cold, very dry air is what bothers me the most. The nights when it's 0, a bit windy, and there's not a cloud in the sky are brutal.
