Cincinnati: Uptown: UC Athletic Facilities
The more I think about the feasibility - wouldn't Short Vine be a better choice to shut down for tailgating and a pregame street party? Calhoun provides access to thousands of parking spots under UPA and in U Square, so it wouldn't make sense to close those on game day, but Short Vine, especially after the current redesign is implemented, could be perfect. Especially if UC tries to use the former Pizza Hut/Blockbuster lot as the main tailgating lot, it could simply spill over onto Short Vine. Huggins is almost a Pete Rose type hero in Cincinnati. A man's man, a spectacular sportsman who brought joy to fans, and was ultimately tarnished by an evil outsider. No one cares about your rule violations if you can win games. It's a shame that something as stupid as driving drunk way too many times ended his legacy here, but it did set an example. There's a company called 3-2-1 Ride that operates in Cincy now, and it's single purpose is to drive out to where drunk, rich people are, and drive them and their car home. I have heard through sources that both the UC Athletic Department and the Reds have corporate accounts with them so the higher ups can get a free ride home and not risk a DUI. If we would have had that service back in the early 2000's Huggins might still be our coach. While we're on the topic, I wonder what it would take to get a street named after Huggins?

I disagree, anyone who went to UC after Bub Huggins was fired is typically a fan of the football team. UC was only a basketball school until Huggins was forced out, and UC joined the Big East and had a string of great football coaches. Granted, the typical older alumni might not think much of football, but recent grads do and the number of recent grads is constantly growing. As a more recent grad, I look down upon anyone who graduated from UC but considers themselves an OSU football fan - they just haven't yet realized what they have in town.

Cincinnati: State of Downtown
^ It's not rocket science, it's because the casino had people fill out the survey for a chance to win $100 to use at the casino. The biggest group of people to do the survey were referred to it by the casino. These are people willing to drop $100 to sit in a chair and pull a lever for half an hour for the chance to win back that $100, so of course they'll take a survey for a 1 in 10000 chance. These are the same people who only come downtown to go to the casino or a Bengals game once every 3 years. Most of them probably didn't realize OTR was across the street when they said it was evil.

University of Cincinnati Bearcats Football Discussion
I was at the game, it was not very crowded, there were maybe 20,000 people or so in attendance. There were basically no students there, which is the side effect of having to play at Paul Brown on a weeknight. I imagine the majority of people there had to work in the morning, and just went home after the game. It also didn't help that it was 27 degrees with a windchill of 19, either. I wasn't quite used to cold weather yet (I am now) and was freezing the whole game, despite being in (5) layers. The wind was brutal to extremities. That said, going for it on 4th, on your own 30, with a couple minutes left is a video game play. Who does that? Though in hindsight it might be the reason we won the game - our defense was awful, and a punt would have just meant ECU burned off more time before scoring to go up, which would have left UC without any time to get into field goal range.

I doubt the lawn will go away entirely, but I have also heard there will be an entrance of sorts that faces Corry. I figured it’d be back near the athletic center, though. I’ve also heard the second level seats will be accessed via skywalk of sorts - and that the concession stands are going to be double height spaces so that there is circulation between seats and concessions on both levels. As for closing Calhoun, I imagine traffic would just be directed up to MLK which has more than enough capacity. If anyone has ever tried to drive down Calhoun on a Friday night at 5:30 when there’s a game at 7:00, you’ll know it might as well be closed, anyway. There’s just not enough room for both through traffic and 30,000 people trying to find parking spots. It’d be closed for a couple of hours, 6 days a year. Compared to how often Vine and 5th are closed for festivals downtown, that’s nothing. The trick would be closing it to thru traffic, but still maintaining access to the garages that fill up. UC has fielded a very good football team over the last few years. Most people don't realize they're one of the winningest programs since 2007 or so. The new stadium, and encouraging more tailgaiting closer to the stadium will be huge for UCs football culture.

Cincinnati: Clifton Heights: U Square @ the Loop
A combination of old and new would have definitely been better. I think a lot of people are critical of U Square and UPA because they are just plain old ugly. The streetscape is vibrant and that’s nice, but the buildings are as bland as you can get. Part of the problem is inherent in this “superblock” type development. It’s tough to not have either a bland, monotonous facade like UPA, or a goofy attempt at making one huge building look like several buildings ala The Banks or that thing on Ohio and McMillan. These places are charging close to $3000 a month for four bedroom apartments, they can afford to step up the game a bit and focus on the design. Anything else and I just feel like the community is getting shortchanged while developers turn massive profits, all while collecting tax incentives.

Cincinnati: Restaurant News & Info
All you can drink brunches in NYC - I've always wondered how $15-$20 in NYC can get you an all you can drink brunch, but there's nothing in Cincinnati remotely similar. There's very little in the way of brunch here.

I'm a bit surprised - I figured the Browns fans would take my remark as a not so subtle compliment, not a smack. It really is saying a lot.

Cincinnati Bengals Discussion
It was a short week, and the coaching staff is mediocre, at best. The Bengals probably underestimated the Browns, who aren't as completely as shitty of a team this year as they have been in recent memory.

Cincinnati Area Geographic Information System (CAGIS)
^^ The downloads are all .shp files, so you would need to find a program to convert them into .dwg or .dxf files to use in CAD. A quick Google of "convert .shp to .dwg" will bring up a few freeware solutions like QGIS, which can export to .dxf. If you have access to ArcGIS (DAAP does) you can learn how to get into it and get CAD out of it pretty quickly.

Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: Development and News
I wonder if the hooker barricades affected the property value much? On one hand, the barricades curbed prostitution on the street and probably gave it a cul-de-sac like aura. On the other hand, you need barricades to stop prostitution on the street. It sold for a decent price given the condition of the building.

Ohio Smoking Ban
I used to work in a car dealership during high school/college and at least half the people there took smoke breaks all the time. I would usually just join them and do something just as arbitrary like eat a banana or drink a soda. I never got any crap for it but I guess that depends upon the type of boss man I had. The logistics of smoke breaks have evolved over time. Smokers have been pushed away from front doors to back doors and loading docks, then in some cases completely off the premises. Hospital workers can sometimes be spotted a block away smoking next to a dumpster. In Cincinnati I see hospital staff smoking on the "woods" side of Dixmyth Ave. across from Good Sam. Meanwhile patients often just wheel their iv's into the Dixmyth lobby marquis. The VA has a dedicated smoking box near the emergency room entrance which is always a beehive of activity. Near the Cleveland Clinic you will see doctors hiding in the high weeds on abandoned lots across from the campus. Another great smoke break venue is the 5/3 parking garage at their Madisonville office. You will usually see a small cluster of smokers on the second-highest deck overlooking I-71. And btw I'm convinced that the motivation for wrecking the skywalk system in DT Cincinnati was in large part motivated by the many smokers who sought refuge there. At all times in the 90s and early 2000s any view of Fountain Square was embellished with a handful of smokers leaning against the skywalk rail above Vine St. I'm actually amazed at how few smokers you see in downtown Cincinnati the past few years. There are a few hotspots here and there, usually in front of vacant storefronts or buildings. There's a building on west Fourth near Plum that is vacant and has a recessed, covered storefront that has at least 4 smokers hanging out in it at all times between 9-5 (for some reason Uptown Rentals owns the building). Every once in awhile I'll see someone on Fountain Square get yelled at for smoking, too, but for the most part smokers are few and far between.

^ People just pretend to be outraged that retail workers have to work on Thanksgiving. What they’re really outraged about is that they, as shoppers, have to get to the Black Friday deals on Thanksgiving.

I think the word your looking for is "football." It's football, there should be trash talking and hard hits, no matter what the score is.

Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: Development and News
"Born Again Distillery, a name Hobbs has already trademarked..." I don't know that BAD is the best acronym to go with for a business name. Also, stamping money with an advertisement is explicitly illegal, so they might want to stop that.

Make mine a Guinness. It'll be your choice between a Burger or a Hudy Delight. As the cheapest beers in Cincy, they aren't as good as Guinness, but a few tiers above Great Lakes.

The Indianapolis Bengals showed up tonight. This was very uncharacteristic - but it wasn't indicative.; if the Bengals don't the season with a better record than the Browns I owe everyone here a beer.

^ Is the plan to tear down all of the buildings in the red crosshatched area? Those are all pretty big industrial/warehouse buildings that are in use. I can't believe that plan is the best solution.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
I predict a COAST lawsuit for the portion of this plan that uses parking revenue to pay for the streetcar. The legal precedent that prevents the city from doing this doesn't deal specifically with parking, though, so it'd actually be an interesting case. The precedent was that a municipality can't tax one group of people specifically and spend the money elsewhere, but I could easily see a court agreeing that transportation fees and expenditures can include both parking and mass transit.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
Greg Little has 4 catches for 55 yards and has only played 22 snaps for the Bengals this year - a pretty good ratio. That said, with AJ Green back he probably won't get many snaps against the Browns, I don't think he played at all against Jacksonville, if he did he wasn't targeted.

Cincinnati Bengals Discussion
How good did Hill look yesterday? Not to mention his celebrations are spectacular - I think he'll be getting some calls from Geico soon. Hopefully the Bengals will use him and Bernard in combo on the ground a lot more now.

Cincinnati: Demolition Watch
Ram23 replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Architecture, Environmental, and PreservationThe owner of the Davis Furniture building on Main Street has a letter on Cincinnati.com today in which he attempts to justify his decision to tear down the building. There’s no mention of what they intend to do with the land afterwards, so my guess is on offering some free parking to their tenants. There’s no way they’d get a new building as large as Davis on that site for the $2.8 million they estimate the repairs to be, so apparently neither renovation or replacement is viable for them. Their price is around $127 a square foot. I think that falls in line with the cost other similar properties throughout OTR are being renovated at. I don't think they'd be able to build new at that price, unless it was done on the cheap.
