A parking garage with a Domino's Pizza. Interestingly enough, Cranley's wife's family heirloom (Gold Star Chili) was closed in order to build this parking garage. I think it and Subway were a couple of the last things to operate in there.
  2. This isn't Pittsburgh, Bengals fans lasted through the 1990's, and aren't going anywhere. I think the only “bandwagoners” were the ones putting too much hype into the number 1 power rank, expecting them to run the table or something. The Bengals are a top 5 for sure, but until they can prove they can win in prime time they won’t see that number one spot again (though the next prime time game is against the Browns so a win there won’t surprise anyone, but it will at least get the prime time losing streak a bit of a break). For a lot of people, the 2, 3, 4 win seasons aren’t that distant a past, even though for most Bengals players they are, as they weren’t a part of those teams. The Sunday night Bengals looked a whole lot like one of those teams. That’s what people mean when they make a “typical Bengals,” cliché. Though in the past few years, the “typical Bengals” are actually a division wining, playoff bound team. It just takes a bit longer than that to wear off the stigma of a decade plus of losing. That said, a perpetual one and done in the playoffs team isn’t going to cut it in the long run, either. On a related note, I turned off the audio on NBC right after half time and elected to listen to WLW even though it wasn’t in sync. I honestly don’t know how Cris Collinsworth continued to be able to speak with his lips constantly affixed to Tom Brady’s ass, but I couldn’t listen to him. How do we go about disowning him? I’m going to boycott anything and everything he sponsors for at least a few months until I forget about this.
  3. The location now, while not pedestrian oriented at all, seems to get a lot of customers who walk over from dorms and other housing adjacent UC near Short Vine. I see people walking from UPA and Ohio as well. Reading and MLK isn’t walkable from main campus. With the way Kroger tracks everything about everyone who buys anything in their stores, there must have been something about the current location they liked. If it was the walkability, I wish the design would reflect that. The latest design isn't much better than what is currently built. Even the second to last design, while far from perfect, still had Short Vine connecting over to Vine in a way that would work perfectly for a streetcar extension north up Short Vine and south on Jefferson.
  4. ^ I immediately associate the term "DogBerry" with poop. I think it's a similarity to dingle-berry. Whatever the origins, you shouldn't want your brand name to encourage images of poo. Plus, there are quite a few "dog" beer brands already (Flying Dog, Dogfish Head, Red Dog (is that still around?)).

I think a lot of it has to do with the simple fact that Uber was first in Cincy by a few weeks if not longer. They launched with a lot of press, which at the time was all about competing with taxis, insurance, etc. but nevertheless they were in the papers and TV news for a few days in a row. I’d bet that a lot of people either don’t know what Lyft is or don’t realize it’s a completely different company.
  6. If we're on the topic of chain coffee places, there is a Dunkin Donuts on Court Street. They do $1 any size iced coffee from 2-6PM and it's everything you'd ever hope it would be. The large is literally like a Big Gulp of coffee. If I had to pick one, I'd say I actually prefer Dunkin to Starbucks, taste wise, but I'm usually scoffed at for that view. Unlike Starbucks, which are all corporate owned, Dunkin Donuts are franchises so there is at least some semblance of local ownership.

^ He is the McDonald's of street art. You can go to almost any city in the country and find the exact same street art because someone paid him to come into town and copy pasta it all over the place.
  8. In several areas around Findlay Market they are replacing the entire road base. At first I thought it might be for reinforced slabs at bus stops but now they're doing it on the left side of one way streets. Was that always planned for or are they fixing issues they caused/found during construction of the rails? I thought they were just repaving streets at the end of construction.
  9. I don’t know about Brady being “done” but New England definitely has some O-line issues that the Bengals D should be able to take advantage of, and they don’t really have much in the way of receivers. The Bengals have the ability to make this game end up just like the Atlanta Falcons game did. We really, really need to get the red zone offense working, though. On a related note, the prime time games this year (Sunday, Monday, and Thursday night football) have an average margin of victory of 17.5 points. There have been a ton of blowouts, not to mention one by the Falcons, who had just been handily defeated by the Bengals the weekend before winning 56-14 against a team that went on to beat Pittsburgh at home.
  10. I was hoping for some more dining options in this building. I don’t think I’ll ever eat at this Domino’s, though, but at least we are getting more dining/lunch options in that corner of downtown. There are a couple of delis in the southwest corner of the CBD, but not much else.

^ It'd be great if she does have evidence and is able to get Smitherman on an ethics violation. I don't think it would help her case any, but I wouldn't mind Smitherman getting in trouble.
  12. It's tough to tell whether a situation like that helps or hurts morale. Everyone's saddened by it, but there's also an emotional backing to play that much harder in memory of the deceased. Win the game because that's what he would have wanted to see. Manti Te'o had his grandmother and girlfriend (who he didn't know was fake at the time, I think) pass away and had one of the best games of his career a few days after. I agree it's a shame this game wasn't played in 2009 or 2010 though. Of course, OSU would have had to vacate if they won if they would have played in 2010 anyways. I suppose OSU can still say they haven't lost to an Ohio team since whenever, since they just vacated their wins in 2010 instead of forfeiting. There should be an asterisk whenever that stat pops up.

A norm-core phone would be something like a first generation iPhone or a Samsung that’s about 4 years old. It should probably be a bit scratched up, and maybe even have a cracked screen. It should also have a ring tone that just sounds like a phone ring. I’m afraid that flip phones are completely hipster at this point, as are 90’s midi ringtones. They aren’t quite to the level of old Nokia bricks, but they’re close.
  14. The 25th overall ranking is based on average yards allowed per game, and that's the standard way of "ranking" offensive/defensive teams. This time of the year, that ranking is highly misleading because we had only played two games, but Simms wasn't wrong when he said they were ranking 25th. But yeah, by in large CBS announcers are pretty bad. A few hundred of those yards was junk yards. The team put in their second stream players while the other team had their #1's, since the Bengals had big leads in EVERY game. And aside from that, the Bengals have the best scoring defense in the NFL with 11 points per game given up. The announcer was just looking at a stat sheet and not thinking beyond the surface. When a team is winning 26-0, it is not the right time to try to make a point about their defense being bad.
  15. The Chong is an interesting store. The guy who owns the store owns the entire building and has since 1993. I have no idea what the upper floors are, but with those tiny windows it must be an awful space to be in. There's some charm to this stretch of Race because of the ugly 1950's architecture. ^ As for the CVS, the building it is in was built in 1950 per the county auditor, which looks about right. It seems to have a different owner than the tower portion, even though it looks like one building. The building The Chong is in was built in 1865 per the auditor, but it seems like something was demolished and The Chong building was built in its place, unless it was a fairly substantial 1950's remodel. Sanborn maps would probably be more accurate.

Dunnhumby probably wants their own building. All of the office space is theirs as currently designed, isn’t it? From the design of the interior space, they want it easy to move from floor to floor and they don’t want to have other office tenants able to get into their space. It’s much easier to just have one check-in/security/reception desk in the lobby than have different floors with different security access. By making it parking with a chance to expand in the future, they get their own building and have the most flexible choices for expansion.
  17. I was driving back into Cincy from a wedding and listened to the first half on the radio. It took me 3 minutes to figure out what happened on the Dalton TD reception because Dave Lapham was yelling the entire time. It was great. I then watched the second half on TV, and realized what a joke CBS announcers are. I think it was Chris Simms talking about how the Bengals defense would get it together eventually this season and return to being one of the best. He kept saying they were ranked 25th overall, maybe he was referencing total yardage? Either way, it was 26-0 at the time and the Bengals have given up the fewest points of any team in the NFL. All I could think about was how the announcer had a job. Give me Dan Hoard and Lapham any day of the week. As for the rest of the AFC North, It’s a shame Pittsburgh and Baltimore keep winning. I’m glad Carolina looked like crap, though. The Bengals really look like they’re in a tier above most of these teams.

^^ I read that article earlier and my first impression was that it seemed like the woman was probably crossing when she had a don't walk signal. That seems more plausible than a biker going full speed through a red light without being able to see crossing traffic. How are the laws in NYC regarding bike lanes? Do bikes have to use them if they are present? I know some bike lanes make me feel far less safe than riding out in the street.
  19. ^ You're comparing the prices of apples and oranges. On street parking is not equivalent to off street parking in a private lot. Some would even say that existing property taxes are high enough that they come with a reasonable expectation of at least some on street parking based on the frontage of each property. The actual cost of maintaining an on-street parking spot is minimal. On street parking fees everywhere in the country are done to benefit residents, not selectively punish them as this proposal is doing.
  20. Cars will naturally be discouraged in OTR as the neighborhood gets denser, on-street parking becomes too unreliable to find with ease, and off street parking gets too expensive. That's already the case downtown, where few people attempt to rely upon on-street parking. There's no reason to add huge fees to force out cars when it's inevitable anyways. Once OTR has 15,000+ residents, only a percentage of those will be willing to deal with the headache of finding a parking spot every day.

He definitely changes his speech patterns depending on the crowd. I took a few local politics classes at UC and he came in several times to talk to the class. Having grown up hearing him on the news all the time, it was easy to tell that his entire demeanor changes based on his audience. He's scarily good at it.
  22. The $300 fee is unprecedented. I don't think it's a move Cincinnati should make. I think more meters in OTR, limiting residential spaces, would be a better move. It would force people into garages and lots, some of which the city currently profits off of. It would also generate additional revenue for the city via the meters. I also think the hours should be extended to midnight, as the area is a dining and nightlife district. Any potential residential fee should be nominal, and limited based on street frontage.
  23. That was actually my first thought, too. How's he going to cover OSU receivers if CPD can keep up with him in stride? This would be a non-issue if he hadn't tried to run. No one cares about citations for weed anymore. They're on par with citations for expired parking meters. Running from the cops is never a good idea though.
  24. ^^ The old Adriatico's location was just like that, though now I don't even remember if they did have any tables but I'm pretty sure I ate pizza there as a drunk freshmen anyways. ^ There is still a Snappy Tomato buffet downtown, open only for lunch on weekdays. It's one of the best value lunches one can find downtown. There are still a lot of Angilo's spread around the suburbs but I haven't been to one since the early 2000's so I don't know if they still fit the mold described by GCrites above. The air in the one I frequented as a kid was so greasy that you almost had a residue on your skin by the time you left, even if you were just picking up.
  25. It’s somewhat of a brand competition. If one brand is going to build a new hotel in a market, all of the other brands don’t want to be left out. Even if it means in the end they all barely break even, at least the competition doesn’t make tons of profit.
