  1. Will it still be an international/family student housing? If so, I could see the lack of fume hoods in the kitchen making it a uniquely smelling place.
  2. Any neighborhood that has more than about 20% to 25% subsidized housing is not sustainable nor self sufficient. An argument could be made that a majority of the affordable housing in OTR is poor quality and needs replaced, but the goal should still be to eliminate much of it while improving the quality of the remainder.

It’s all about people buying friends with their donations. I think Cranley thinks he can eventually earn a higher office, so someone in Michigan might invest in him hoping to get favors back should he ever hold office at the national level – if he does, the mayor of Flint is due for a favor. Same thing with Sittenfield, his family’s wealthy friends were investing hoping he gets to a higher office eventually and throws a few kickbacks their way.
  4. That's great that there is scheduled service at LUK, but Morristown, NJ is hardly NYC! I think they provide a free shuttle bus into Manhattan from the airport in Morristown as part of the flight.
  5. I peered in the lobby a few years ago, and the furniture looked cool...maybe even original. I hope they don't toss things that might be of value....wouldn't be surprised if the stuff was Florence Knoll or Herman Miller (or similar). It was also pretty amazing that the street lobby doors and windows looked original and custom. Hopefully they aren't just tossing it. I would pay money for a lot of that stuff - I'm sure others would, too. Mid Century Modern furniture is a goldmine right now.
  6. The large, 10-story red-brick building (old Pogue's warehouse?) on the east side of Race between Third and Fourth is probably the largest completely vacant building in downtown. And I've never heard so much as a whisper of it ever being redeveloped. Surprising, considering its great location and seemingly awesome views. Plus, much like Terrace Plaza, the old Pogue's Warehouse is a fine example of Modernism. I would love to get a look inside it. Also, it seems like the Warehouse is owned by the development arm of Drury hotels... But it has been since 2000 so it doesn't seem like there's any plan for it.

Don't forget the Steinway St. shopping district. It's always worth a visit.
  8. ^ I've heard it was just leaky ceilings/walls and the owner of the building didn't want to fix them so Arby's used that as an excuse to break their lease. Hopefully that's just typical neglect and not the basis for an excuse to tear the building down...
  9. While we're on the Subway discussion, their new look is an improvement over the traditional booths and bright branded colors: http://www.nwitimes.com/business/local/new-decor-premieres-in-nwi-subway-restaurants/article_6ce1e4ab-3d2d-5493-a2de-fd26d7a8e5ce.html This is apparently the look of the Subway that is going into Carew Tower.
  10. I like the absurdity of COAST's main criticism that the streetcar is "so poorly thought out." As if over the course of the past decade no one considered the fact that it will run on the streets in traffic.

Not trying to argue but these are things I've seen with my own eyes. Picking out the unattractive girl in the class and singling her out as looking the most in need of love in front of 50 other people to get a laugh is incredibly unprofessional. Telling the fat kid in a class that he looks like the one that would benefit the most out of coupons for free food is unprofessional. Using his access to student email accounts to send out mass emails to further his political agenda is unprofessional. Telling a group of girls that they don't belong in the shop because women don't get proper safety is sexist and unprofessional. Stating that he never goes back on his word, saying he'll for sure give out 'pot' plants, then going back on his word is unprofessional in several ways. The guy is classless and about as far away from an asset to the school as one can get. If these are things that I've seen with my own eyes I can only imagine how often this kind of thing happens when I don't see it. I just think lots of people hate the guy because of his politics and look for excuses to attack his character. It’s college; there are plenty of “unprofessional” professors, adjuncts, etc. that make offensive jokes in front of classes or have atypical methods of doing things, in general. Berns just has a sense of humor that may be abrasive to some with weak skin.
  12. Someone really should start a petition. NYC has commemorative street names all over the city, they are just in addition to the numbered streets rather than a replacement. I believe that is how most cities do it. Also, there should be a 1st Street and possibly a Front Street somewhere down there.
  13. Subway franchise licenses are extremely cheap, and the operating expenses are next to nothing. They can be supported on a hundred customers or so per day, easily. There's a reason there are more Subway locations on the planet than any other restaurant. In NYC, for instance, I have noticed a few spots with more than one on the same block. As has been pointed out, OTR's new Subway is going into the bottom of a parking garage, so it's not really breaking up any historic fabric. Even if a chain did end up going into a storefront on Main or Vine, who cares? I'd imagine the lease wouldn't allow any ugly alterations to the storefront, and would it really be that bad to add a bit of diversity to the neighborhood? Boutiques and expensive restaurants do not make for a livable neighborhood, just a destination - maybe OTR needs some Dunkin Donuts and a FedEx Kinko’s.

I know that I'd rather see them play Pittsburgh than St. Louis for that one game.

I attended DAAP for 6 years and disagree with most of this post.
  16. I'm not saying it's not possible, but how much of corporate level management will stay in place isn't known so anything that is currently being negotiated could be thrown out entirely after the purchase is finalized. The more I think about it, though, it seems like a possibility. Saks probably didn't have the money to open a new store right now, but Hudson's Bay does.

Well I don't know who I'm voting for now, but that's a respectable reason to drop out. Now we'll see if Queen Noble can sleep at night knowing she's the one solely costing the city $400,000 so she can collect her 152 votes. This does highlight how stupid the mayoral primary setup is, though.
  18. Saks is currently being purchased by parent company Hudson's Bay (owner of Lord & Taylor) so I doubt they would be negotiating a move/new store right now as the entire company is in transition mode. They have also been closing stores as of late, not expanding or renovating or moving.
  19. I'm surprised people on this forum dontnunderstand what happened here. Council had to pass a budget in late May, about 5 weeks prior to the date of the fiscal year, because Cincinnati lost the emergency clause. Usually budgets end up passed the night before (slight exaggeration) and they have some pretty good estimates. 5 weeks early meant there was lots of money they couldn't legitimately budget for. That being said, the city does seem budget extremely conservatively which leads to large announced deficits followed by big carryovers. Pretty annoying Who doesn't understand it? My point was that it was politics as usual, and I have a feeling the doomsday budget proposed by the city manager was part of a greater agenda that including forcing the parking deal through. The fact that even without parking monies there's no deficit and no need for cuts is further proof of this. Firing hundreds from the police and fire departments and closing most of the parks was absolute hyperbole spoon fed to us by the city administration.
  20. Cincinnati City Council to reverse all layoffs, fund minority business accelerator Citing an increase in revenue from 2013, six Cincinnati City Council members said Tuesday they will restore funding for all positions that had been eliminated in the May budget. http://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2013/07/30/cincinnati-city-council-to-reverse-all.html So the question now is how much of the budget crunch we had a few months ago was real, and how much was just politics?
  21. East Side neighborhoods plead case on parking Community leaders of Oakley, Hyde Park and Mount Lookout on Monday told Port of Greater Cincinnati Development Authority officials to not increase meter-enforcement hours in those neighborhoods under the city’s controversial parking deal. http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20130729/NEWS0108/307300009/East-Side-neighborhoods-plead-case-parking There’s no logical reason to extend hours other than a money grab – it’s essentially charging residents even more for what we are all paying for already. The argument that spaces will turn over fails because the middle and upper class can easily refill parking meters via smartphone. The only benefit will be more open spaces because some people won’t be willing/able to pay – thus parking will get easier for those with money, and extremely harder for the poor and any residents who happen to live near business districts.

I noticed Cranley anti-streetcar ads start popping up on my website today: http://zfein.com/photography.html I just use Google Ads and it usually automatically places contextual ads that are Cincinnati or photography based in one way or another. I think I have managed to block it now, though. Just thought anyone with a Cincy website and Google Ads might want the heads up! I like to keep political discourse where it belongs, which is not on my site.
  23. My argument is how to prevent the desire to commit a violent crime is a more proactive and potentially successful measure than a Three Strikes law that has been proven to not deter crime. The amount of violent offenders in the country is incredible considering how controlled American society is. No other nation puts as many resources into law enforcement and surveillance. If the idea of going to prison for 25 years doesn't prevent the desire to commit a violent crime, then what will? It's a shame that certain aspects of American culture have helped to create people so obtuse that they just can't stop being violent, but until there are any actual alternatives I don't have any reason not to support a three strikes law.

The Republican Party is not going to ever endorse a Democrat. Unless he jumps ship, they won’t be endorsing him. The city’s Republicans may vote for him over Qualls, but he won’t get an official endorsement. I suspect they didn’t endorse Berns because they didn’t want to get destroyed in the primary. Even with an official endorsement he wouldn’t touch Cranley or Qualls, but I suspect he may have a higher number than usual this year since there’s no real Republican candidate.
  25. Well, that way they won’t have to worry about them getting wet and then potentially freezing and cracking. It’s a win-win, really.
