Cleveland City Council approves closing jail, selling police headquarter CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland City Council voted Monday to approve legislation to close the city's jail and to pay Cuyahoga County to house prisoners and suspects. Council also voted to sell the downtown building that houses the city jail and police headquarters to Cuyahoga County. With closure of the jail, the headquarters could be moved to another building downtown. The long-discussed deal is expected to save Cleveland about $5 million a year. Rather than operating a jail, the city would pay the county $99 a day per person to house its prisoners. New general manager Yael Ron, who arrived in Cleveland just two months ago, predicts the Ritz-Carlton, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, will become the top-rated hotel in the Midwest. But first: a long overdue, top-to-bottom renovation of what has long been considered the most opulent of Cleveland accommodations. Landing the Ritz-Carlton was considered a coup for Cleveland in the early 1990s. It opened as part of what was then the high-end Tower City Center retail complex, on the top nine floors of a 14-story office building adjacent to the mall. But in recent years, the hotel has shifted its focus. Since 2011, the Ritz-Carlton has been owned by companies affiliated with Dan Gilbert, the owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers and JACK Cleveland Casino, located across the mall from the hotel. I heard from a friend who knows the owners that Brewnuts might be opening in the Detroit Shoreway area. Not sure if that would be a permanent spot or just a pop up spot. I couldn't find anything from them directly that confirms this though.

Ikea plans Columbus store, but that doesn't rule out Cleveland-area project CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Furnishings giant Ikea will announce Tuesday morning that it is planning a second Ohio store - in Columbus, not Greater Cleveland. But that news shouldn't discourage the retailer's fans in Northeast Ohio. "A store in Columbus does not preclude a Cleveland-area store," Joseph Roth, a company spokesman, wrote in an email late Monday evening. "They are separate and distinct metropolitan areas, both of which can support an Ikea store long-term on their own." Ikea confirmed, in a media alert, that it has staked out a Columbus-area site. The retailer expects to divulge more details at an 11 a.m. news conference at the Quest Conference Center off of Polaris Parkway, just east of Interstate 71. Citing unnamed sources, the Columbus Dispatch reported that Ikea is planning a 354,000-square-foot building on 33 acres, on the site of the former Germain Amphitheater. The Dispatch said the store will open in 2017. That site would put a third Ikea store within a 170-mile radius of Cleveland. The Swedish retailer already has stores in Pittsburgh - a two-hour drive - and Canton, Michigan - a slightly longer trek. I'm sure they already knew they were opening the store in Columbus when they bought the land in Brooklyn. It's not like they just made the decision within the last month. This makes me think they still plan on opening one in the Cleveland market but its probably further away then we had initially thought.

Cleveland among 24 U.S. cities vying to host Centennial Copa America soccer tournament games Northeast Ohio soccer fans might have something big to look forward to in 2016. Cleveland is one of 24 U.S. cities that have expressed interest in hosting games during next year's Centennial Copa America, according to this news release from the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football. The organization, known as CONCACAF, said “between eight and 13 stadiums will ultimately be selected” to host games for the 16-nation tournament, which will be played June 3-26, 2016. It will be the first time this tournament has been staged outside South America. “One important factor in determining the winning bids will be a recommended stadium seating capacity of at least 50,000, as this high-profile tournament is sure to draw multitudes of fans to each stadium selected,” CONCACAF said in the release. The cities that expressed interest in hosting games are as follows: Atlanta; Baltimore; Boston; Chicago; Cleveland; Dallas; Denver; Detroit; Houston; Indianapolis; Jacksonville, Fla.; Kansas City, Mo.; Los Angeles; Nashville, Tenn.; New York/New Jersey; Orlando, Fla.; Philadelphia; Phoenix; St. Louis; San Diego; San Francisco; Seattle; Tampa, Fla.; and Washington, D.C.

So I went to a couple places including Fridrich's in ohio city. I have decided I don't want a true road bike but I like the hybrids but still not sure on which one. I tested a couple of them and sort of liked the Diamondback Insight 2. It just felt comfortable while I rode it and it seems like would be able to get to places with ease but then again all I had previously was a mountain bike which I haven't ridden in a while. I also tried a couple others I dont remember the name other then it being by Raleigh but they didn't feel as comfortable or smooth. I guess my question now is would the insight 2 be an okay bike for the price? Is the quality decent for the price point? I'll be going tomorrow to some local bike shops now that I have a better idea of what to look for thanks to everyone here. Hopefully between the advice and a fitting I can get something I will feel comfortable with.

Thanks again for the advice so far everyone its been helpful. I'm pretty sure at this point I'll go to a local bike shop. I'll check the ones out around Ohio City / Tremont. Just a couple questions: 1. The suggestion to get toe clips - Is it easy to get your foot out of those incase you needed to for any reason? 2. Do most bike shops assist with fittings / measurements and do they actually let you test bikes out? Thanks for the suggestion X for testing the Bike but I didnt know if all these bike shops allow you to do that. 3. I know my budget is on the cheaper end but is there anything specific I should look for? Size of wheel / material / etc.

Hi guys, I have been looking to get a new bike but not really sure where to start. I currently just have a mountain bike but I'm looking more for a road / commuter bike. I would probably use it for commuting occasionally probably less then 15 miles in a day and occasionally go on some paved park trails. I'm just starting to get into biking more often so I don't need anything too crazy and prefer the flat bars for now also. I'm hoping I can spend under $500 if possible and looking to get on advice on what I should be looking for and what route might be the best. I have found some bikes online through bikes direct and wondering if anyone has used them. I'm in the Cleveland area and I know there are a bunch of bikes shops but wasn't sure if I could get something with my price range.
