1. Yea sry didn't actually mean the same people moved the rink. If University Circle does this every year however, which I think it already had some plans to do so, it will make it even more difficult to get one on Public Square again. This is a pic from 2004 on public square
2. They used to have one right on public square but now it has been moved to University Circle. Last year they actually had one outside of the Science Center. Not sure the reason for removing the one on public square though. Is there some kind of rule that skating rinks have to be downtown? Dont have an actual picture of the one at university circle except for this rendering
3. Cleveland port seeks experts to craft grand vision Posted by Tom Breckenridge/Plain Dealer Reporter December 02, 2008 15:25PM CLEVELAND -- By next fall, port leaders want a master plan showing how the port's gritty expanse can transform into an attractive maritime neighborhood. Port staffers told members of the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority board on Tuesday that they are ready to solicit a planning consultant and financial adviser to chart the long-term redevelopment of the land west of Cleveland Browns Stadium. That redevelopment is expected to unfold over the next five to 20 years. The plan calls for moving docks and warehouses from 100 acres near the stadium to a new home -- a 200-acre peninsula at East 55th Street in Lake Erie... http://blog.cleveland.com/business/2008/12/clevelands_port_seeks_experts.html
4. Yea it just opened up in the last couple of months and the Caddilac Ranch didn't look as bad as some made it out to be. I almost didn't even notice the cadillac ontop but I knew it was there and looked for it. I looked inside and it seemed like it was packed along with the outside bar which I thought was neat with the fire roaring up from the middle of it, which you can kind of see in the picture right above the last Caddilac Ranch pic.
5. Took some of my family members from Detroit down there with their 2 children and they loved it. They told me they didn't know of anything like that in their downtown, which I find hard to believe perhaps they just don't know. We arrived kind of late however and couldn't really see much of the parade but all along the route and E.4th / Warehouse District / Public Square were packed at the conclusion of the event. All in all it was a blast like usual but I kind of wish the ice skating still took place on public square instead of University Circle On another note my camera doesn't take night shots well and there were a ton of other visual things to see which I just could not capture but perhaps one day I'll remedy that.
6. Fireworks after horse carriage parade Higbee's (Public Square) Public Square (Didn't go through all the decorations but I'll be visiting the lights again once I get back) Tower City (Had to wait a couple hours after the event so I can even try taking pictures inside) Some of the Ginger Bread houses displayed in tower city The rock hall.... Up to and including E. 4th st.
7. Since the Flats East thread is closed I just had a question about whether anyone knows if the 1 Hotel and Residences is still planning on being built or if it was ever seriously considered as part of the plan.
8. Here are the 2008 rankings - Notice the difference from the one's I posted earlier. Springfield, OH went from being the 52nd most dangerous to 132nd. I have to look at their so called methodology of ranking metro areas because the variations differ drastically from year to year. 2007 Rankings Top 6 Metro areas (most dangerous) #1 Detroit, MI #2 Memphis, TN #3 Las Vegas, NV #4 Flint, MI #5 PineBluff, AR #6 Saginaw, MI For Ohio Metro Areas #52 most dangerous Springfield, OH #62 most dangerous Columbus, OH #70 most dangerous Lima,OH #72 most dangerous Toledo,OH #117 most dangerous Cleveland,OH #145 most dangerous Dayton, OH #156 most dangerous Cincinnati, OH #191 most dangerous Mansfield, OH #289 most dangerous Sandusky, OH 2008 rankings Top 6 most dangerous metros #1 PineBluff, AR #2 Memphis, TN #3 New Orleans, LA #4 Las Vegas, NV #5 Sumster, SC #6 Florence, SC ** Detroit was first in last years metro area for most dangerous but was omitted from these rankings due to no available data. This was the case for Atlanta, Minneapolis and several other cities as well. ** Another interesting note there are cities like Chicago who are always omitted from the rankings due to some unavailable data and this is the case every year. Maybe all cities should just start saying they don't have data? Anyway carrying on Ohio Most Dangerous Metro Areas #67 Columbus #100 Cleveland #110 Toledo #132 Springfield #140 Lima #162 Cincinnati #167 Dayton #171 Mansfield #174 Akron #317 Wheeling WV-OH Not sure how important population is in these rankings not like they are well done anyway is that the population for some of the cities that increased were reduced dramatically. Cleveland for instance in the 2007 ranking had a metro population about 120k larger then the metro number they used in 2008. Anyway I guess I shouldn't get to caught up in misleading numbers and rankings that omit cities like Detroit just because they had incomplete data. http://os.cqpress.com/citycrime/MetroCrime2008_Rank_Rev.pdf
9. Sorry I accidentally posted the release of the 2007 rankings instead of the 2008 rankings. I'll make another list for this years and that one includes Akron in it.
10. The most dangerous metro areas are kind of interesting (from the same ranking systems) Top 6 Metro areas (most dangerous) #1 Detroit, MI #2 Memphis, TN #3 Las Vegas, NV #4 Flint, MI #5 PineBluff, AR #6 Saginaw, MI For Ohio Metro Areas #52 most dangerous Springfield, OH #62 most dangerous Columbus, OH #70 most dangerous Lima,OH #72 most dangerous Toledo,OH #117 most dangerous Cleveland,OH #145 most dangerous Dayton, OH #156 most dangerous Cincinnati, OH #191 most dangerous Mansfield, OH #289 most dangerous Sandusky, OH http://www.cqpress.com/docs/Metro%202%20-%20Most%20Dangerous_14E.pdf

OOO I like this thread :) I will have to post some of the cities I currently have saved although some of mine have the modified transportation system add on's among other things but it looks sweet. However if you like simcity games don't try simsociety because it was a complete let down and I kind of expected it before I bought it but it was even worse than I expected. Oh btw richNcincy how does Cities Xl actually compare to the simcity games? I looked at the site and the concept seems the same but is it more in depth than the Sim City series? Either way it seems like it will be a great game and the online aspect is intriguing as well.

So a Northeast Ohio congressman on Tuesday called a higher authority: President Bush. This was the latest attempt by Rep. Cargo would arrive in Cleveland via the St. Lawrence Seaway. The delegation visiting Cleveland this week was to meet Monday with Mayor Frank Jackson, who traveled to Costa Rica early this year to start negotiations. The group includes Costa Rican businesses selling coffee, cereals, tropical fruits, teas, spices, canned beans, vegetables and other products.

19. Medical Mart To Further Expand City's Medical Image POSTED: 2:30 pm EST November 12, 2008 UPDATED: 6:08 pm EST November 12, 2008 CLEVELAND -- Slowly Cleveland is being redefined. The mills are gone and hospitals have emerged as greater Cleveland's biggest provider of jobs. And soon, the new Cleveland Medical Mart will help further expand this city's medical image. Fred Nance, chairman of the Site Selection Committee for the Medical Mart said, "We have concluded that the river front site and the Higbee building are the best location." Tax dollars are already being collected to build a national Medical Mart downtown, with a new accompanying convention center, all of it to be patterned after the mammoth Merchandise Mart of Chicago. The people who run the Merchandise Mart in Chicago will be running the Medical Mart in Cleveland and they're already working on attracting major medical shows to our city. Anyone from anywhere looking to buy any state-of-the-art medical, hospital, surgical or general health care products will come to Cleveland. The Medical Mart will be one-stop shopping. "The feedback has been very positive. The interest in this project is very strong," said Mark Falanga, senior vice president of the Merchandise Mart. Falanga explained how the Medical Mart would resemble the Merchandise Mart. "The Medical Mart in Cleveland is really a version of what we have here in Chicago," Falanga said. "We're really creating a marketplace, a place where buyers and sellers can come together to conduct their business efficiently." And a new convention center in Cleveland to accompany the Medical Mart would likely draw medical shows here all year long. "You know Clevelanders often don't believe something good is coming their way until they see it in the ground. How much of a reality is the Medical Mart?" NewsChannel5’s Ted Henry asked. Falanga answered, "Well we're 110 percent committed to it. We think there's really no probability of the project going south on us." Chicago's Mart draws 33,000 people daily to its mammoth retail displays, shows and conventions. Nobody expects Cleveland's Mart to be so big, but if Cleveland draws just 10 percent of the 571 annual medical shows and conventions in America, it can be a great success. Myron Maurer, senior vice president/general manager of Merchandise Mart Properties, says the biggest plus for a successful Medical Mart in Cleveland is the Cleveland Clinic. "That's the real draw, and that it's feeding off of that," Maurer said. It was when the Merchandise Mart people came to Cleveland from Chicago that the Cleveland Medical Mart was born. "We were invited to Cleveland by Dr. Toby Cosgrove," Falanga explained. "He introduced the idea to us then that Cleveland should be the home for the first Medical Mart in this country" The Cleveland Clinic's Toby Cosgrove envisioned a Medical Mart drawing more national attention to Cleveland one day, along with prestige and dollars. But his idea is not without criticism. Ted Henry will have that part of the story on Thursday, Nov. 13 on NewsChannel5 at 6. He will also take a closer look at how the Cleveland Clinic and all of Cleveland's hospitals and medical research projects can enhance the success of Cleveland's Medical Mart and the city.
20. The last initiative to pass casino gambling was the whole learn and earn thing which was rejected by a 57% to 43% margin in 2006. This time around it was rejected 63% to 37% but you can see the votes for yes on this issues were communities near the proposed site and the no votes obviously the further you got from the site for the most part. This kind of shows that people aren't really just against gambling but want to have some part of it in their vicinity. The initiative in 2006 was closer to passing then most of the other measures yet it only included basically the Cleveland area. I honestly wonder if we used the same wording for 2006 and simply included Columbus and Cincinnati into the mix if it would have passed or at least been very very close.

Nehst Creations, led by the executive producer of the Billy Bob Thornton film "Sling Blade," wants to be a production house for small films made in Cleveland and spur the growth of film-related jobs here. Legislation giving Nehst Creations 17,000 square feet of rent-free space at the convention center for one year was to be introduced at City Council Monday night. The council recently approved another proposal from Jackson to pay $1 million to help bring the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony - held in New York City every year except two - to the city in 2009. Events associated with the ceremony are expected to pump more than $28 million into the local economy. Similarly, the film deal is supposed to eventually generate revenue for the city. Nehst Creations is committed to spending $125 million in Northeast Ohio if the state legislature passes a proposed tax credit for filmmakers, said Ivan Schwarz, executive director of the Greater Cleveland Film Commission.
