Chicago - The Southside & Westsiiiiiiiiiiiide!
What is the Sun-Times like now? I have not picked up a copy since probably 2003 or 04, the last time I was in Chicago. Is there any quality journalism and indepth articles? Has the paper shrunk? Is it liberal still? Will it survive? I could not imagine Chicago without the Sun-Times. The Trib is a white collar corporate conservative paper that mostly covers suburban issues anyway, :x whereas the Sun-Times covers the city mostly with very little about the suburbs, especially the exurbs. I hope some locals or whoever knows the situation well can answer these questions. Thanks. :-)

Chicago - The Southside & Westsiiiiiiiiiiiide!
I think Chicago's more decayed neighborhoods almost certainly do have a future due to the massive immigration into the city by latinos and many other ethnic groups. Plus the revitalization is creeping further and further south and past the United Center on the west from the loop. Maybe the area all the way from Hyde Park and South Shore will be revitalzed all the way to the loop, and UC will not be an island in the rough anymore. It will happen, but I don't know how long. Life is short. Daley is doing a lot of good things even though I never liked his political tactics, but things are getting done.

Andre's Chicago Photo(s) of the Day(s)
Im nearly 100% sure I will make it to Chicago for December. I have to see the lights. Plus I have not been there in a while anyway.

Hoboken, NJ October 2009
My friend lived in Jersey City pre 9/11 and I stayed there a lot. He later moved to Hoboken, which I liked better but I think the Jersey City view is better, especially before 9/11 but things will be changing.

Cleveland: Perception Issues
That stupid Plain Dealer always criticizes the city and never tries to offer any solutions. What a joke. I have read that paper for about 13 years or so, I'm 28. It's always been the same. It's unfortunate because the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette offers so much positive news and critiques the problems of the city and metro, while not overdramatizing them like the Plain Dealer. It does lots of research and publishes the solutions to the problems. I am sorry you are stuck with such a negative newspaper in Cleveland.

Midtown Cleveland
Is Cleveland city proper holding its own, declining or possibly getting better? This city sure has the bones and is obviously better off than Detroit and Buffalo, but can this city turn around and become vibrant in many more of its neighborhoods? What about the crime? How is the mayor and what is getting done in the city overall? It definately has the potential IMO to become great, though it will take a long time, but I can see some hope for the future. I hope you Clevelander's can answer some of these questions and don't feel afraid to type a good bit. LOL I would just like to hear opinions and what is going on from someone who lives in the area. Try not to be biased. I know it's hard. The downtown was very nice. I was there for the Metallica Concert Thursday and I was impressed. My friends were too. They had never been there. I have not been to Cleveland for several years myself. I have just been too busy visiting other cities and I don't have much money anymore which sucks. Time to save up.

What Mass Transit Systems Have You Ridden?
I have never said it was bad or anything. I have seen it many times. It is great for a city the size of Cleveland.

Boston, MA Oct 2009
In all reality Boston doesn't even feel any larger than Pittsburgh, Cincinnati or St. Louis IMO. Philly, NYC Chicago, Toronto etc are my favorite cities within an easy day drive, though Chicago does have a big ego nowadays and is getting worse. The segregation in Chicago is astounding as well, and not talked about enough by the white population. Chicago used to have midwestern sensibility and hospitality, now it has that superiority complex. They will not acknowlege the city's major problems. As long as the Northside is good, that's all that matters type attitude. It has become so white collar and corporate like the Trib newspaper. Push all of the major problems under the rug. I hope some forumers can elaborate? Thanks!

Dayton Skyline and Randomness, OCT 09
I really hope this city comes out its sad economic condition. It has so much potential and so much to work with already. Great photos too. Do you think things are improving now or will in the not too distant future? I am just hearing so much bad.

Great work.

What Mass Transit Systems Have You Ridden?
For one I live in West Virginia (across the river from Ohio, but still). There is no reason on earth to ride the rail system in Cleveland. It would be a waste of time and I don't care for that city in the first place to be honest. Parking is cheap downtown too.

I appreciate the info. You are a good source for Chicago info.

Boston, MA Oct 2009
Boston also feels very small to me as well for such a large metro population. Really kind of weird.

Cleveland: Perception Issues
I do have to agree, I really like the Upper Midwest Accent in Cleveland and further west.

2010 Gubernatorial Election
Well said. We need a real liberal party in this country like Canada, which actually has more than one. Strickland is a moron and not more than a conservative/moderate dem and Kasich is a right-wing freak who subs in for the evil Bill Oreilly or should I say Bill O LIELY.

AP: "Empty Neighborhoods Fill Rustbelt"
I don't think Columbus was ever really Rust Belt (it's just surrounded by the Rust Belt region). Cincinnati certainly used to be Rust Belt and the media labeled it as such, but most the economic damage has already been done (hence why it's doing better than other Midwestern cities in this current recession). But keep in mind the damage was pretty immense. The heritage of Rust Belt is there in various areas of demolitions and abandonment. Cincinnati is at the "Pittsburgh" stage (former Rust Belt that has moved onto other things), but with what seems to be more stable population. My guess is that the writers never bothered to see if Cincinnnati is still Rust Belt or not. Basically, I'd say the Ohio cities that can be labeled Rust Belt today are Cleveland, Toledo, and Dayton (also nearly all of the small cities in the state such as Springfield, Lima, Mansfield, Canton, Middletown, Youngstown, Warren, Lorain, etc.). The cities teetering on Rust Belt are Cincinnati and Akron (they're getting out of it). The city that was never Rust Belt is Columbus. It's an education and government economy. Thanks

If you had the resources, how would you improve Cleveland?
^ I agree, but also get the high crime rate down too.

Americans fleeing nation's big cities
We all know Cincy is way more urban and interesting than Indy will ever be. It's only a matter of time before people realize this to a greater degree than what is happening now. Indy is more like a subelt city except with a better downtown core than most. I was there twice within 2 weeks and just shook my head most of the time.

Cool city.

Boston, MA Oct 2009
Boston is just too great for its pathetic skyline. I hope not to offened anyone, but that is what I have always thought.

When is the Riverwalk going to be done? When will Cabrini be totally gone? Are those renovated projects beside Chinatown mixed income and safe?

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
A city as nice and vibrant as cincy should get this. It's too big of a metro not to. Even Buffalo has light rail, which makes Cincy look worse. The two growing cities and metro's in Ohio have no light rail, which makes no sense. I don't know about Cincy's subway that wasn't used, but could it be used again or have the tunnels collapsed in certain areas or something else making it less cost efficient?

Columbus: General Transit Thread
Thanks for the info guys. Hopefully something will happen before too long. I have been waiting for this crap in Columbus since the 1990's. Sad.
