Doesn't that article debunk your myth?

Cleveland: Innerbelt News
I like KJP's concept too. One bridge over the river (current 490 bridge) makes sense, though there would then never be an alternative when it is rebuilt in 40 years. Relocating the highway out of downtown is consistent with what they have done in other cities, is it not? (Memphis, for instance)

They still use the in-sidewalk elevator at the Metzenbaum Court House. Not sure is any others are still in use.

Gas Prices
Gas $3.19 in Westlake this morning. Lowest I've seen in a while.

A word, if I may, about terms, so if you are talking to someone, we all speak the same language. Rail lines have "stations", and the HealthLine is being added to RTA's rail map. The large enclosed structures on Euclid Avenue and Public Square are "stations." The small curbside structures are "shelters." Thanks.

I did not read anything to indicate he is a creationist. Nice dig, though.

Pet Peeves!
Flip flops no longer just for the beach. Seriously, it's all some people wear now, even to work and church. No one wants to see your ugly feet or hear you flapping down the hall!!!

Miscellaneous Ohio Political News
Conspiracy theorists run amok? The 2004 Ohio results were cpnsistent with polls/exit polls. Not sure what they expect to find other than perhaps a contract that was not fairly bid out.

Where did you get your political beliefs?
Funny stuff.

I agree. Isn't Hyde Park partially in an old bank / vault?

Peak Oil
It's 2008 and no replacement for the oil-based vehicles we all own has been found. 15 years ago, I would have bet that would not be the case. Are we close? Americans are not ready to move back to cities and take public transportation, but maybe at $20 a gallon they will be? It's going to be a tough sell, that's for sure. I grew up in the suburbs, moved to the city, but then moved back out. Not sure what it would take to convince my wife to move into Cleveland/inner-ring suburbs. I don't think she knew anyone who bought RTA monthly passes before she met me... ;)

Ahh, thanks for the info. Kinda glad I did not use RTA for the game. I used the Red Line for the Dallas game.

A few comments: 1. Our legal staff looked at the regs closely. The penalty for breaking this rule is fairly harsh, and it is not worth the risk. 2. The Indians flyers were cut several years ago, and the Browns flyers were already in jeopardy. Two reasons -- low ridership and the length of the games. No matter how many people ride the bus, you have to pay an operator to sit there for 2-3 hours, then make a single trip back. That's the same reason why some schools are cutting back on field trips -- too expensive. Thanks for your comments. I saw all kinds of RTA coaches after the Browns' game last night, I presume shuttles to various park n rides just like prior years.

The official opening is still a month away. Perhaps they'll make a pass down the street fixing things like crooked poles.

Cleveland / Lakewood: The Edge Developments
That's the Fuel Perks scam! Do the math, Fuel Perks do not payoff when you buy items that are available at Marc's, Walmart, or Target. Not even close.

MTS - Thanks for the input. KJP - The article is posted above. Essentially the quality control contractor and the general contractor were one in the same. Huge mistake by RTA. The "inspections" and testing of the concrete cannot be relied on. It may end up being a non-issue if the concrete holds up, but I think money was probably spent on a quality control inspection that was bogus, unfortunately.

I wonder if this happens during construction of the Convention Center, if the county will be given a pass.

So the fare goes up $.25, but the monthly pass goes up $13/$15? Why the reduction in the monthly pass discount? ou'd think the most frequent riders would not have to bear the greatest increase in cost. People who ride to and from work every business day on a park and ride will pay 12.5% more if they pay cash, but 21.5% more if they use the monthly pass.

http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2008/09/rta_didnt_know_about_its_contr.html RTA didn't know about its contractor's ties Posted by Joel Rutchick and Sandra Livingston, Plain Dealer Perk Co., owned by Anthony and Joseph Cifani, was primary contractor on this stretch of the Euclid Corridor project. McTech Corp., owned by Mark Perkins and Joseph Cifani's wife, provided much of the concrete. And TTL Meadows Group, a joint venture in which Mark Perkins' sister and Anthony Cifani's wife had a financial interest, tested the quality of the concrete .....

General: Complete Streets, Road Diets, and Traffic Calming
Just a hunch, but I would not expect a major trend of highway removal. Some urban highways, sure. Like the West Shoreway in Cleveland, but nothing earth shattering or life-style changing is going to sweep the country anytime soon.

I feel your pain. I was stuck this morning between W117 and West Blvd for 45 minutes. Just to rub salt in the wounds, the train behind us crossed over and passed us. If only I had been running even later! I used to take the train every day and was only stalled a handful of times over 6 years or so.
