Cleveland: Downtown: Playhouse Square Development and News
I thought Wicked was wickedly funny and entertaining. Unfortunately, I will miss Jersey Boys, but will try to get to Macbeth and A Christmas Carol later this year.

I don’t like that attitude. Besides, I think lesser educated, even illiterate, people make up a solid core of who should and does use public transportation.

http://blogs.edmunds.com/karl/2008/07/car-guys-versus-environmentalists-why-i-can-only-wear-one-of-those-labels.html Written by Karl Brauer, Edmunds Car Guys versus Environmentalists: Why I Can Only Wear One of Those Labels "The automotive and oil industries need to stop profiting from raping our planet!" "Environmentalists won't be happy 'til we're all living in caves and eating leaves!" I could go into a long-winded discussion of the opposing views between environmentalists and car guys, but in the spirit of efficiency I think the above statements capture the most extreme perspectives quite effectively. ...

I trained for and ran a half-marathon last year. Shin splints nearly derailed that. Nothing you can do except light stretching, ice, and rest.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
I was on the Red Line yesterday between TC and Triskett and heard the "packages" announcement 8 times. Probably too often, but since they are working on the system I'd think it will get better as they work out the problems.

Cleveland: HealthLine / Euclid Corridor
Two artic busses (Numbered 2900 and 2901) were hanging out on Public Square again today. They need to get those things running soon.

It's a cool idea, except since we'll all be living in high-rise apartments along Euclid, only those with balconies facing the right direction can use them effectively...

I think we can all agree this system will be great once the kinks are worked out. Most drivers were not calling out stops, though RTA policy says they should.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
The automated announcement system to announce stops rarely works well in my experience on busses and trains. Some bus drivers still call out stops, but with the accoustics on a bus, he's practically talking to himself.

Not sure why they expire, but they will exchange them for newer passes at the RTA customer service office in Tower City.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Fare Box issues were not limited to the new fair boxes. I stopped buying monthly passes years ago because with just a few free rides each month, it was cheaper to buy the 10-Ride cards (now 5-ride since RTA inexplicably stopped selling 10-rides). Two other issues have lead to reduced fair collection: Some, including one of my own, 5-Ride fare cards started counting over after a few rides. After 2 or 3 rides, you'd put the card in and it would print over top the first ride and would start counting down again. Several people have told me they got 7-9 rides off one card because of this. Also, when they rolled out the new park-and-ride busses (numbered 1701, 1702...), they could not figure out how to fit the new fare boxes on the bus, so they ran the busses for several weeks with no fare box. I know some riders were waiting for that bus to show up because they knew it would be free. I am not sure why RTA did not just leave the busses in the garage until they adapted the fare boxes to fit on the bus.

Just saw the new silver Route #6 bus driving around Public Square. They certainly are sharp looking.

Personal vehicles are likely to not go away. How they are powered will have to change.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
This was one of the times that I didn't. I was preoccupied by observing my daughter's second ever ride on the rapid! I have been sharing things with Jerry in the past, though. On the brighter side of the news, I had a driver stop at the W. 65th Street station a couple weeks ago who saw me hustling across the ped. bridge on my way to the station house. She gave a friendly "toot too" to let me know she was waiting. She smiled as I ran to get on the train and I gave a winded "thank you!" This was the second time she's done this in the past few months and it shaves a good 15 minutes off my AM commute. Thanks! Tuesday, May 27th, 8:18 AM Windermere-bound Red Line #310 I will make sure the operator is recognized internally I disagree. Unless the train was ahead of schedule, it should not have waited for him. It's not fair to the riders already on the train trying to get to work on time. Many stops you can sit there all day waiting for the next guy running across the bridge...

Who's NOT to blame for $4 gas
While that article above is misleading, so is your post. Your logic seems to assume all other North American sources are closed up. ANWAR would be supplying a portion of our oil for many many years. That said, I am actively looking for answers to our oil dependency. We need answers beyond public transportation. I bought a Hybrid 3 years ago and have never regretted the extra cost, plus I feel like by suppoting this technology, it will be enahnced/expanded and perhaps we can work our way towards 100 MPG+ or non-oil based cars altogether...

Cleveland: HealthLine / Euclid Corridor
Drove down Euclid again today. Noticed the edge of the platform already crumbling at the East 30th westbound station. It almost looked like perhaps the busses are hitting it as they pull right up to the stop.

Not surprising, but does that count the riders parking at the hotel? People have been doing that even when the lot is not full... When will the expansion be complete?

I hope they finish East 9th soon. That intersection has been too torn up for too long. Being a pedestrian at that intersection is dangerous!

Rethinking Transport in the USA
I am all for that. Maybe they can create personal vehicles that can travel by rail. I am just thinking that a reinvention of the personal vehicle (that uses little or even no oil) is a more practicle answer than planning out mass transit that will be underutilized except in some big cities/close-in suburbs.

Rethinking Transport in the USA
Compact, walkable communities are a nice alternative to alleviate dependence on cars. The only problem is that even at $4, or even $8 gas, many Americans do not want to live in these types of areas. I don;t believe they are being selfish in not wanting that. It seems to me that we cannot advocate removing lanes and installing rails on interstates if that is not what people want nor what our transportation network is demanding. In many ways, the answer to our problems may lie in more efficient personal vehicles, not in extensive expansion of mass transit.
