The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
Even with a great defense OSU will have to improve on offense (mainly pryor) to beat the upper echelon teams like Florida, Alabama, and Texas. Until then they are definitely the best in the B10, but not a national championship team. If he does improve, which I think he will, this could be a very interesting next couple of years for the bucks.

Agreed, there is no silver bullet. But you must consider that the majority of the gamblers will be those who can least afford it. Gambling casinos bring a wealth of social issues when you consider the people gambling away house payments, college savings, retirements.... let alone the consideration that all the money spent gambling would/could be spent on dining/movies/other recreation around the area. The cons can easily outweigh the pros. That's why this Issue 3 is a bad deal. Ohio must be very careful about bringing these casinos into urban areas. I'm willing to bet that the people who have an addiction to that level (bet car, house, savings, etc) are already gambling at back door games, horse tracks or other states... Exactly you don't think addicts are already gambling online or illegally? At least now it will be regulated. Some of the $$$ people lose will go to the city/state instead of criminals.

Completely agree.......Me and my friends go to W VA every month. I hate that drive. We would rather lose our money locally.

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
Unemployment claims rise for second straight week; Columbus worst in Ohio "Ohio is still in recession," Zeller said. "All of our local counties are still way over the number of weekly new claims that would signify job growth and a recovery. The figures continue to be worse out in suburban counties such as Medina and Lake than they are here in Cuyahoga County." Despite the experience in Northeast Ohio, it pales compared with the Columbus area. Columbus has the highest unemployment rate in the state. "It is very rare to see Columbus being hit harder by a recession than Cleveland," Zeller wrote. "In Columbus, some of the worst elevated levels of layoffs right now are in Delaware County," he wrote. "That is extremely unusual. Delaware County is probably the fastest-growing county in Ohio." http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2009/08/unemployment_claims_rise_for_s.html

Totally agree. With the lakefront development plan and other projects in the cooker, I think Cleveland stands the most chance to thrive in the future.

Youngstown-Warren: General Business & Economic News
Call-center operation is ‘home run’ for city VXI Global Solutions is expected to hire 150 people by Oct. 1. By William K. Alcorn YOUNGSTOWN — A Los Angeles-based call-center company says it will set up business in the city-owned former Phar-Mor Building downtown and eventually employ about 500. Mayor Jay Williams said VXI Global Solutions is expected to hire 150 people by Oct. 1, when the center is scheduled to open at 20 Federal Place, and an additional 50 a month after that, up to about 500. If business is really good, VXI has an option on a second floor of the building and could nearly double that number of employees in the future, said Williams, who announced the company’s coming at a news conference Wednesday. http://www.vindy.com/news/2009/aug/13/call-center-operation-is-8216home-run8217/?newswatch

US Economy: News & Discussion
C-Dawg Njaim - I felt the same way when I was living in Youngstown. Very depressing. I moved to Cleveland almost 2 years ago. It's not nearly as bad as what you describe Toledo and Detroit to be. I really believe the economy is already getting better here, or maybe not getting any worse.

I'm not sure what it is. It seems like a lot of these guys are studs in AA and AAA, then they get called up and look like they couldn't start for the bad news bears. Pitching wise i would say its more identifying the talent.

Forbes: Best Cities for Singles 2009
As if the Plain Dealer is reputable these days? If they wanted to tout the article, they could have done an add on and discussed the things (neighborhoods, restaurants, bars, clubs, social networks, etc.) that do make our city "appealing" to singles. However, the PC is only going to regurgitate information on Downtown, Ohio City, the Flats and Tremont. So unfortunately, they wont be able to go into deeper analysis of the article and if Cleveland singles feel the same way. Are people hearing chatter about this article? I think their scope of 'singles' and what is appealing to them leaves out a big but silent and neglected crowd who does NOT prefer the bar, etc.. scene. If that is all a publication can tout as what is appealing to singles... Then it is very narrow and demonstrates an extreme lack of creativity in discovering the many other ways singles can spend their time and activities in which to engage. Personally, I have grown out of the bar scene.... Many eventually do and look to broaden their horizons and grow other interests...and if that is all a community can offer to singles, it really gets boring eventually. I'm not defending the accurancy of this article at all, but if you look at the rankings, Nightlife was only 1 out of 7 categories. They didn't just look at the bar scene. That being said, good luck getting young professionals to move to an area that doesnt have a thriving nightlife.
