Cleveland: Downtown: May Company Building
Dan Gilbert's Bedrock is sizing up May Co. building Cavaliers owner, financier and casino operator Dan Gilbert's Bedrock Real Estate Services may be starting to step up its game in the downtown Cleveland property market. Bedrock's name has surfaced as the potential buyer of the old May Co. department store on Public Square. The building also has an often overlooked side on Prospect Avenue across from the Jack Cleveland Casino's welcome center, parking garage and recently installed Wahlburgers eatery. Three sources familiar with the situation, who asked not to be identified because they are not authorized to discuss it, said Gilbert's real estate arm is in due diligence to buy the building's upper floors from Euclid of Cleveland LLC, the Miami Beach, Fla.-based affiliate of real estate investor Robert Danial. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20170730/NEWS/170739993/dan-gilberts-bedrock-is-sizing-up-may-co-building

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
Investors starting to shower their love on Cleveland Veteran investor and global business authority Frederick Shepperd left Ohio in 2007 to establish a family office for high-net-worth people from a base in Zurich, Switzerland. Capital was flowing away from major markets like New York and into Europe at the time, Shepperd said, as U.S. property values began to plummet and other market indicators pointed to a coming recession. So the New Philadelphia native followed the money overseas. He has run Shepperd Investors AG from a European foothold for more than a decade now. Through a related alliance of family offices based in London, Shepperd's network has grown to roughly 200 European families from some 15 different countries with more capital than massive U.S. investment firm The Blackstone Group. His office invests directly in companies long-term, often targeting family owned operations. This March, Shepperd returned to Ohio. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20170730/NEWS/170739994/investors-starting-to-shower-their-love-on-cleveland

Cleveland: Downtown: Medical Mutual HQ Renovation
Medical Mutual soon might reacquire its headquarters Circumstances at its longtime headquarters in the 10-story Rose Building in downtown Cleveland may make it attractive for Medical Mutual of Ohio to stay in place. The health insurer, which has 1,000 workers stationed at the building at 2060 E. Ninth St., for almost a year has conducted a search for a new headquarters, or perhaps staying in place, that also considers combining its suburban and downtown workforces at another location. The buy-and-stay possibility has surfaced in a brief in a Cuyahoga County foreclosure case between its landlord, an affiliate of Los Angeles-based Bentley Forbes Group referred to as MMCO LLC, and the holder of the mortgage on the property. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20170730/NEWS/170739989/medical-mutual-soon-might-reacquire-its-headquarters

Ohio: General Business & Economic News
I could careless what Wisconsin is paying for those jobs, it will be a wait and see game. This is an investment that Ohio hasn't seen in decades, and probably never will see. I can only imagine the infrastructure buildup that will happen with this. Milwaukee's already building like crazy now, this will only add to it. Not to mention Wisconsin's labor force is at the highest it has ever been. Ohio isn't even close to its peak, still declining.

Xinji Noodle Bar opens in Ohio City (photos) CLEVELAND, Ohio - An unconventional route led Shuxin Liu to open Xinji Noodle Bar, which debuts today in Ohio City at 4211 Lorain Ave. Ramen, steamed buns, Korean-style fried chicken and rice dishes will all be served up - but that wasn't always Liu's path. The name "Xinji" itself - Liu's middle name passed down through his family - means "new opportunity." After trading in his pursuit of a graphic design degree, Liu learned the ropes of making sushi at an area high-end grocer. It wasn't long before he found his way to Solon's Akira Sushi and Hibachi and later to Dante and the restaurant's sister sushi restaurant, Ginko. He traveled around the country, including Houston, Atlanta, Seattle and New York, where he staged at the renowned Momofuku. http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2017/07/xinji_noodle_bar_opens_in_ohio.html#incart_river_home

Project aims to restore Liberty Textiles Building Two factors have prompted the Kassouf family to undertake a revitalization of its Liberty Textiles Building, 1277 W. Sixth St., after a nearly 30-year wait. First, Joseph Kassouf, the son of longtime parking lot owner-operator and downtown Cleveland property investor James Kassouf, said rents only recently have reached the point where constructing apartments makes sense. Second, the family decided to drop a long-held dream of installing a boutique hotel in the Liberty, which dates from 1890. "The Cleveland hotel market is saturated," Joseph Kassouf said, "while demand by people to live in downtown Cleveland is strong." http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20170716/NEWS/170719862/project-aims-to-restore-liberty-textiles-building

Sneak peek: Inside Jeremy Umansky's forthcoming delicatessen, Larder (photos) CLEVELAND, Ohio - When chef Jeremy Umansky announced he would be opening his own place nearly a year and a half ago, the project quickly became one of the most anticipated in the city. After making a name for himself through both his work at Trentina and on his own, he began hosting pop-ups to tease what would one day become a delicatessen, Larder. Food and adventure have always gone hand-in-hand for Umansky. His work at Trentina put him on the map for his innovative work in foraging and fermentation. He'll bring the same techniques to Larder at its new home, the 1854-built Ohio City Firehouse at 1455 West 29th St. Plans call for an October opening. He'll launch the business with his wife and pastry chef, Allie La Valle-Umansky, and Kenny Scott, formerly sous chef at Trentina. http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2017/07/jeremy_umansky_larder.html
